OTTAWA -- The Ottawa REDBLACKS did not disappoint the sold out crowd at TD Place on Saturday night, defeating the BC Lions 27-16 in their home opener and earning their second straight win to open the season.
With the win, the REDBLACKS match the number of victories that they had in total last season.
Henry Burris led the REDBLACKS with three
touchdown passes and 296 yards while Travis Lulay was 18-for-32 for 254
yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Arceneaux had a game-high seven catches for 112 yards for the Lions but was outshone by local Ottawa product Brad Sinopoli, who had nine catches for 99 yards along with a touchdown for the REDBLACKS.
After a long layoff for one of the league’s most proven passers, Lulay attacked the REDBLACKS defence on his very first play from scrimmage, connecting with Arceneaux on the deep ball to move BC within scoring range.
A pass interference penalty called on a review by rookie head coach Jeff Tedford extended the Lions’ drive, which eventually ended in a Richie Leone field goal – the first of his young career – to give BC a 3-0 lead in quarter number one.
Another field goal built the Lions’ lead to 6-0 early in the second quarter, but the REDBLACKS responded immediately after that. A 21-yard run by Chevon Walker put the wheels in motion, then on a second-down play Burris connected with Williams for a 27-yard pickup to the BC 23.
After Burris extended the drive on second down with his legs on a 13-yard pickup, the veteran gunslinger hit University of Ottawa alum Sinopoli on first down with a swing pass to the right side of the field. Sinopoli found enough space to hit the end zone to provide the game’s first touchdown.
The score capped off a six-play, 75-yard drive and gave the REDBLACKS their first lead of the game.
The lead was short-lived as the Lions added a punt single to tie things up, but Ottawa wasn’t about to let that ruin the mood in its home opener. After a punt inside the final minute by BC, Burris found Sinopoli for a first down in the dying seconds, more importantly giving Ottawa a chance to make a field goal with less than a second left.
Delbert Alvarado connected from 46 yards out with zeros on the clock, sending Ottawa to a 10-7 halftime lead.
An early safety after a snap over the head of Burris put BC back in the game, while Ottawa avoided total catastrophe when the ensuing kickoff was returned by Shaquille Murray-Lawrence for a touchdown – only for it to be called back on a blocking penalty. The REDBLACKS made a key stop on defence and added a field goal to extend their lead, 13-9.
Late in the third quarter, however, the Lions’ offence opened up. Completions to Shawn Gore and Andrew Harris for 29 and 17 yards respectively moved BC to the 26, while from there Lulay found first-year CFLer Austin Collie behind coverage for the drive-capping touchdown.
The six-pointer marked Lulay’s first touchdown pass since 2013 and gave the Lions a 16-13 lead, one they’d take into the game’s final quarter.
The Lions may have taken a loss but both Travis Lulay and Andrew Harris had strong performances in their return to the field. The Lions are now 20-9 when Lulay and Harris are both in the lineup.

With a tight game entering the fourth quarter, the REDBLACKS changed momentum in an instant. Burris went deep to off-season acquisition Greg Ellingson and after the pass was tipped by defensive back Ryan Phillips, Ellingson was able to corral the football from on the ground for the highlight-reel touchdown grab.
That sent a spirited TD Place crowd into a frenzy, as the REDBLACKS regained their lead early in the fourth, 20-16. Burris later added a touchdown pass to former BC Lion Ernest Jackson, giving Ottawa a 27-16 lead with under eight minutes to go.

WINNIPEG – Offence, defence, special teams, they all got in on it.
Brandon Banks once again took a punt return to the house and Zach Collaros threw a pair of touchdown passes as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats controlled the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 52-26 at Investors Group Field Thursday night.
Banks’ second return touchdown in as many games springboard a simply dominant second quarter by the Tiger-Cats but they didn’t truly take control of the game until Winnipeg starter Drew Willy exited.
With 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Willy dropped back and readied to absorb a hit from a blitzing Hamilton defence. Defensive lineman Adrian Tracy finished off a sack on the Bombers QB which sent him to the turf. He was helped off the field and did not return.
Willy was 3 of 6 for 48 yards before leaving the game. Bakari Grant had six receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown in the win.
Two teams that had no issue putting up points last week each scored on their opening drives.
After the Bombers earned a single on the opening kickoff, Zach Collaros led a solid first possession, finding Terrell Sinkfield for a 38-yard gain to set up a 19-yard Justin Medlock field goal.
Collaros finished 26 of 33 for 354 yards and 2 touchdowns.
A 33-yard Justin Veltung kickoff return aided Drew Willy in a 9-play, 74-yard touchdown drive.
On his first possession Thursday, he connected with Nick Moore and Julien Feoli-Gudino before handing the ball off to tailback Paris Cotton who weaved his way to a 13-yard touchdown.
Cotton tore up the Roughriders last week to the tune of 108 yards on the ground and 59 in the air. His rushing major gave the Bombers an early 7-3 lead.
Collaros quickly answered with a touchdown drive of his own after LB Mike Daly stepped in front of an errant Willy toss. The second-year Tiger-Cat pivot completed passes to Sinkfield, RB Ray Holley and WR Tiquan Underwood before lobbing the ball into WR Terrence Toliver for a 3-yard score.
The Ticats defence swarmed the Bombers starting quarterback on the next possession, leading to his aforementioned departure on the hit by Tracy.
Brian Brohm would enter in relief but before he got a chance to take a snap, the Tiger-Cats padded their lead in a way it seems only they can.
Banks fielded the punt that followed the hit on Willy, scanned the field and then raced down the sidelines 67 yards for the touchdown. Banks did the same thing last week vs. Calgary, also for 67 yards, when he took one to the house against the Stampeders.
Brohm struggled to get into rhythm when he did get on the field as the Tiger-Cats made no secret as to what they were doing on defence, sending the house on what seemed like every play.
Multiple two-and-outs led to what would become a
second-quarter onslaught by the ‘Cats with Willy in the locker room and
unable to help his team answer Hamilton’s vaunted attack.
First, Collaros completed three receptions to underwood – one of which was 29 yards – leading to a Jeff Matthews QB sneak major.
The ensuing Bombers drive saw Brohm’s pass tipped at the line and land right into the hands of DB Emanuel Davis who waltz 30 yards for the touchdown.
Already up 31-7, the Ticats kept pouring it on as the second half ticked down. Collaros connected with veteran Grant underneath before the two connected on a 35-yard touchdown when the former Cincinnati QB found Grant over the top.
Brohm and the Bombers offence finally strung together significant
yardage when the 29-year-old pivot found Moore before heaving a pass up
for Clarence Denmark. A successful challenge by head coach Mike O’Shea
helped earn a pass interference call on Davis and the 34-yard penalty
led to a 4-yard touchdown by Cameron Marshall.
The Bombers backup tailback had two majors last week against Saskatchewan.
The Tiger-Cats came out of halftime with a 25-point lead, and quickly added another three points with Medlock knocking through a 32-yard field goal on the strength of a 51-yard Grant catch-and-run.
After Winnipeg added a field goal, the Ticats turned in their second pick-six of the night when former Bomber DB Brandon Stewart snagged a Brohm toss and marched his way 38 yards untouched for the touchdown.
Brohm answered with another scoring drive, completing a trio of passes and handing off to Cotton before escaping the pocket and diving into the endzone on a 17-yard touchdown scamper to cut the lead to 49-26.
Once the Ticats added another field goal at the three-minute warning, rookie QB Jeff Matthews entered the game.
The Bombers will stay at home next week as they prepare to host the Montreal Alouettes. After spending the week out West practicing, Hamilton will return home as they enter an early bye week.
