KISS Keep Playoff Hopes Alive in 37-27 Win Over Outlaws

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The LA KISS (4-11) defeated the Las Vegas Outlaws (5-10), 37-27, to record their franchise record fourth win of the year and stay alive in the playoff hunt Saturday night at Honda Center.
After beginning the season 0-9, the KISS have won four of their last six games, including back-to-back contests over the last two weeks. LA quarterback Danny Southwick completed 18-of-31 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns with one interception on the night, spreading his scoring strikes out to Donovan Morgan, DeMarco Sampson, and Tyrone Goard. The KISS defensive effort was spearheaded by defensive back Rayshaun Kizer, who led the team with seven tackles and his franchise record fifth interception, along with nose guard Darryl Cato-Bishop, who tallied a team-high two sacks in the win.
The Outlaws were led by wide receiver Tysson Poots, who hauled in 10 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown. The team suffered a big loss on the perimeter when Jomo Wilson went down with an injury following a 15-yard reception early in the game. Quarterback J.J. Raterink passed for 90 yards and a touchdown before being relieved by Dennis Havrilla, who finished the night 6-of-16 for 68 yards and a score.
LA jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter thanks to a three-yard touchdown run by fullback Miles Mason, who ended up with 25 yards on five carries in the game. The Outlaws answered back in the second quarter with a 10-play drive, capped off by a four-yard touchdown pass from Raterink to Jason Willis, evening the score at seven apiece. LA responded with 10-play drive of its own, cuminating in a three-yard touchdown pass from Southwick to Goard. After an eight-play drive, Raterink plunged into the end zone from two yards out to bring the game back to an even 14-14 with 44 seconds left in the half; however, the KISS would score twice more before heading to the locker room, first on a 20-yard pass from Southwick to Sampson, then on a safety with five seconds left on the clock.
Backup quarterback Dennis Havrilla began the second half scoring for the Outlaws, running in a touchdown from seven yards out to bring Las Vegas within two points of the KISS. The narrowed gap would be short-lived, as DeMarco Sampson returned the ensuing kickoff 53 yards for a touchdown. A 19-yard touchdown pass from Havrilla to Poots opened the fourth quarter; however, Ernesto Lacayo could not connect on the extra point, bringing the LA advantage to 30-27. An 18-yard touchdown pass from Southwick to Donovan Morgan with just more than six minutes to play would prove to be the final score of the game, propelling the KISS to a 37-27 victory over Las Vegas. 

The Road Not Taken

Classic poems and Arena Football go together like... well nothing really. However unlikely, `The Road Not Taken', a Robert Frost poem seared into the memory of countless high school students, seems like a perfect fit to describe the journey taken by Orlando quarterback Randy Hippeard. Stories of small-college standouts making it to the AFL are not unheard of, but Hippeard's path may be the most improbable of them all.
Coming out of the University of Virginia-Wise, the 6-foot-2-inch quarterback tried out for the AFL's Georgia Force before the League's restructuring in 2009. When the opportunity in the AFL was no longer there, Hippeard took his talents to Switzerland before coming back stateside to play for the Tampa Bay Storm in 2013. The Stafford, Virginia native then joined Coach Rob Keefe and offensive coordinator Siaha Burley in Orlando this past off-season where he immediately won the starting job.
"It's been great ever since day one," Hippeard said. "Coach Keefe is definitely a players' coach and Coach Burley has always been a top tier player and coach. They are part of the reason I decided to come here."
The choice to come to Orlando has paid countless benefits as Hippeard and the Predators have compiled a 9-6 record heading into Week 17, with two of those losses coming by just one point. Rather than take a stereotypical `one-game-at-a-time' approach, Hippeard chooses to be more realistic when thinking about a title chase.
"You have to realize the talent you have and how far you can go," Hippeard said. "This team definitely has the talent to take home an Arena championship... but you can't get there if you don't win the next one and our next three games are Cleveland, Jacksonville, and Tampa Bay and we're all vying for the same playoff spot. We just have to continue to be efficient."
Being efficient is something said throughout every locker room in the Arena Football League, but it has truly been a theme in Orlando. With help from his entire offense and coaching staff, Hippeard is on track to challenge Aaron Garcia's completion percentage record for a single season. Hippeard's percentage of 75.6 is just 1.5 percent away from the seemingly untouchable mark. The entire offense is essential to the success of the team and Hippeard clearly knows that.
"It's been a combination of everything, the system is a little more open and Coach Burley teaches the game the way I needed it to be taught to me," Hippeard said. "The offensive line has been doing a great job of keeping the pass rush at bay and opening lanes for me to step up in the pocket."
As for his receiving core of Kendal and Brandon Thompkins, Greg Carr, and Larry Brackins among others, Hippeard realizes how special they are.
"I think I have the best receiving core in the League," Hippeard said. "Day-in and day-out, they work together. The way they work together, there are mismatches across the board."
This week's matchup is the fourth time the Predators will be on national television this season. The defending conference champion Gladiators are still serious playoff contenders and Hippeard knows what it is like to play against a hostile crowd in Quicken Loans Arena.
"The energy their fans bring puts us at a disadvantage," Hippeard said. "We beat them at home earlier this year so they are looking for a bit of revenge. We just need to start fast and be efficient."
The national spotlight will be on the Cleveland Gladiators and Orlando Predators this Saturday as the final run for the postseason begins. Both teams will be ready for a knock-down, drag-out contest for a full 60 minutes. The playoffs are on the line for both teams, as Orlando can clinch a spot with a win and Cleveland desperately needs victories to keep pace in the standings. However, Hippeard and the Predators' efficiency could prove to be the difference Saturday at The Q.

VooDoo Topple Storm in Home Finale, 65-53

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans VooDoo (3-12) overcame a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter and used critical defensive stops in the second and third quarters to finish off their final home game with a 65-53 victory over the Tampa Bay Storm (6-9) at the Graveyard on Saturday night in front of a season-high crowd of 5,888.
With the Storm threatening inside the VooDoo five-yard line, defensive back Cortez Stubbs broke up a Jason Boltus pass in the end zone with four seconds remaining in the first half to keep Tampa Bay's lead at 28-24.
The VooDoo took its first lead of the game on their first drive in the third quarter as quarterback Adam Kennedy connected with receiver Roger Jackson on a 35-yard touchdown to make the score 30-28. The VooDoo took over again as they halted the Storm's ensuing possession. Facing fourth down and 11 to go, New Orleans increased its lead as Kennedy completed a touchdown pass to receiver Johnny Lester for a 37-28 lead.
VooDoo special teams made up for its first quarter fumble with a takeaway on the Storm's next kick return. New Orleans turned that drive into a touchdown as Kennedy scored on the quarterback keeper to increase the lead to 44-28 and adding to its total of 27 unanswered points.
Tampa Bay finally broke through on the last possession of the third quarter as Boltus connected with receiver Julius Gregory for a 14-yard score with 30 seconds remaining in the period to make the score 44-35.
The VooDoo continued to answer each Storm scoring drive to keep control of the game and the lead in the fourth quarter. New Orleans snaps an eight game losing streak, while Tampa Bay loses its third straight.
Receiver Chris Duvalt reached a major milestone as he broke 100 receptions in the 2015 season, and defensive back Cameron McGlenn recorded his 207th career tackle for a VooDoo all-time record.

VANCOUVER -- Despite trailing for practially the entire game, the BC Lions were able to pick up their first win of the season in a 35-32 overtime thriller on Friday Night Football at BC Place.
Manny Areceneux caught the game winning touchdown pass in overtime on a four-yard strike from quarterback Travis Lulay. Lulay was extremley sharp throughout, racking up 404 yards and three touchdowns in the contest.
Perhaps the game's most crucial moment came when short-yardage quarterback Brett Smith was unable to pick up the first-down on third an inches givng the Lions the ball at midfield with less than two minutes to go. Lions kicker Richie Leone put himself in the Lions' record books by drilling a 55-yard game-tying field goal, the longest in BC history.
The comeback also marked the first win for Lions head coach Jeff Tedford on the sideline in the CFL.

Tedford, of course, played quarterback in the CFL for six seasons with Hamilton, Calgary, Saskatchewan and Winnipeg before becoming the winningest coach in the history of the University of California, collecting two pac-10 coach of the year titles in the process.
Tedford's offence proved to be effective for the Lions receiving core, as Arceneux, Andrew Harris, Shawn Gore and Bryan Burnham all had atleast 60 receiving yards. Harris also bulldozed his way to 70 yards on the ground.
The Riders were once again let down by their sluggish defence, but did have some bright spots on offence.
Weston Dressler made up for the absence of slot back Ryan Smith as the five-time 1,000 yard receiver hauled in 122 receiving yards and two touchdowns in his monster day.
Dressler opened the scoring on a 45-yard touchdown pass after he was left wide open on a busted coverage by the Lions.
While Dressler made up for most of the yards through the air, the Riders quietly established a strong power running game with the two-headed-monster of Jerome Messam and Anthony Allen combining for 150 yards in the ground.
The Lions started to make it interesting late with a touchdown reception by Rolly Lumbala, but a 46-yard leaping reception by big play threat Jamel Richardson put the Riders in the redzone before Allen, the former Baltimore Raven, ran in a 10 yard touchdown to what Riders Head Coach Corey Chamblin thought would have sealed it.
Yet, the Lions weren't ready to go away just yet.
Hamilton-native Austin Collie added a touchdown with less than two minutes left to pull BC within Leone's game-tying field goal. Collie, the former favourite target of Peyton Manning in Indianapolis, also caught the crucial two-point-conversion.
Next week the 1-1 Lions will have to deal with a hostile environment at Mosaic Stadium in a rematch with the now 0-3 Roughriders in what should be a spirited contest.
