Pittsburgh Power Press Release
PITTSBURGH, PA – The Pittsburgh Power led from wire-to-wire, ending the 2014 regular season with its franchise record 15th win and also extended their franchise-best win streak to 12 straight after a 64-34 victory over division rival Philadelphia Soul (9-9) in front of a season-best crowd of 9,549 tonight at CONSOL Energy Center.
Power quarterback Tommy Grady threw for seven touchdowns and moved into 9th place on the AFL’s all-time touchdown list. Grady finished 15-of-23 for 136 yards. Receiver Prechae Rodriguez caught a game-high four touchdowns. Shaun Kauleinamoku caught two touchdowns and Hank Edwards and James Shaw each added one touchdown a piece for the Power.
Defensive back Virgil Gray had a pair of interceptions, breaking the franchise’s single-season record for picks. Gray also had a game-high seven tackles – all solo.
The Power got on the board first when Grady found Rodriguez for a 14-yard touchdown pass. Kicker Julian Rauch’s extra point was good giving the Power a 7-0 lead. After a lengthy possession lasting 5:13, the Soul failed to convert a 4th and goal from the 7-yard line when Gray broke up a Dan Raudabaugh pass in the end zone. The Power used the turnover on downs to their advantage and five plays later, Grady found Edwards for a 7-yard touchdown catch extending the Power’s lead to 13-0. Rauch’s extra point was wide left.

The Soul started the 2nd quarter with another lengthy drive lasting 7:43. On 4th and 10 from the Power 14-yard line, Gray intercepted Raudabaugh, returning the ball to the Power 10-yard line. However, the Power could not capitalize on the turnover when they were stopped on a 4th and 1 at their 19-yard line. Philadelphia got their first points of the game at the 5:59 mark of the 2nd quarter when Raudabaugh found Anthony Jones for a 16-yard touchdown. Soul kicker Jon Striefsky converted the point after making the score 13-7. After a failed onside kick attempt, the Power would start their next drive at the Soul 10-yard line. Unfortunately, the Power could not take advantage of the good field position and turned the ball over on downs. However, Philadelphia could only advance the ball four yards in the ensuing series, giving the ball back to the Power with under a minute remaining in the quarter. Three plays later, Kauleinamoku hauled in his first touchdown of the game from 14 yards out. Rauch’s kick was good giving the Power a 20-7 lead. The Power defense held the Soul to a quick series – 31 seconds, forcing a turnover on downs with 12 seconds left. Grady found Rodriguez on 1st and goal from the 15-yard line for a touchdown. Rauch’s kick was good giving the Power a 27-7 lead heading into halftime.
The Soul’s first possession of the 3rd quarter lasted only 4 plays, as Gray made his second interception of the game and returned the ball 35 yards to the Soul 5 yard line. On the next play, Grady connected with Rodriguez for the duo’s third touchdown on the game. Rauch kicked an extra point making the score 34-7. On Philadelphia’s next play from scrimmage, back-up quarterback/jack linebacker Arvell Nelson intercepted Ruadabaugh and returned the ball 10 yards for a touchdown. Rauch added the point after extending the Power lead to 41-7. Philadelphia responded with a 7-play, 45-yard drive that ended with a Derrick Ross one-yard rush for a touchdown. Striefsky’s extra point attempt was good and with 5:24 remaining in the quarter, the Power led 41-14. The Soul’s attempt at an on-sides kick was unsuccessful, as Kauleinamoku recovered the ball at the Philadelphia 10-yard line. On the next play, Kauleinamoku scored his second touchdown of the game from Grady. Rauch’s kick was good making the score 48-21. Philadelphia responded with a 28-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Bryan Randall to Emery Sammons. Striefsky’s added the extra point. Pittsburgh led 48-21 heading into the 4th quarter.
The Power wasted no time adding to their lead in the 4th quarter as Grady found Rodriguez in the end zone for the 4th time. This catch was from four yards. Rauch kicked the point after, making the score 55-21. Philadelphia answered with a score when Randall found Markee White for an 8-yard touchdown to make the score 55-27. The Soul went for a 2-point conversion – Randall threw ball incomplete behind the line of scrimmage, which is a live ball that resulted in a crazy chain of events in which five different players touched the ball forcing it backwards towards the Power end zone. Sergio Gilliam was the only person to possession the live ball, grabbing it at the 2-yard line and plunging into the end zone for a 2-point conversion. This increased the Power’s lead to 30 points at 57-27. With Nelson in at quarterback, the Power converted a pair of 4th downs in the ensuing drive that resulted in a 10-yard touchdown pass to Shaw. Rauch kicked the point after giving the Power a 64-27 lead. Philadelphia closed out the game’s scoring with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Randall to Jones. Striefsky kicked the point after to make the final score 64-34.

NEW ORLEANS – The San Antonio Talons (3-15) defeated the New Orleans VooDoo (3-15), 38-35, in overtime Saturday night in front of 6,217 fans in “The Graveyard”.
The game began with an impressive six-play, 48-yard drive captained by VooDoo quarterback Adam Kennedy, culminating in a 19-yard touchdown to receiver Chris Duvalt. Talons quarterback Matt Bassuener quickly responded with his own six-play, 39-yard drive, ending with a touchdown strike to rookie receiver Clinton Solomon, in what was the first of three Solomon touchdown receptions on the night.
The VooDoo responded on the next drive with a six-play, 40-yard series resulting in a two-yard touchdown rush from Kennedy. Bassuener, however, quickly led his team back to a tie game with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Robert Quiroga. Kennedy followed by finding his favorite target from a week ago, Larry Beavers, for a 16-yard score. The Talons followed with a nine-play, 27-yard drive that climaxed with an end around trick play, as wide receiver PJ Berry connected with Solomon for a one-yard score, Berry’s second career passing touchdown.
A failed onside kick attempt by the Talons with 50 seconds left set up the VooDoo inside the San Antonio ten yard line. This three play drive ended with Kennedy’s third and final passing touchdown of the night, as he found Duvalt open in the end zone. On the last play of the half, Bassuener heaved a 28-yard pass to find the red-hot Solomon to tie up the game heading into the break, 28-28.
As stellar as the offense had been for both sides in the first half, the defense stepped up equally well in the second. Following a San Antonio missed field goal, the teams traded turnovers. A Kennedy pass was intercepted by rookie defender Derrick Thomas, who was playing in his first career game with the Talons. San Antonio could not capitalize, however, as the interception was followed by New Orleans receiver Carlese Franklin forcing a Solomon fumble. The VooDoo took advantage, as Kennedy led the team on a six-play, 38-yard drive capped off with a three-yard scamper from the rookie quarterback, his second rushing touchdown of the night and his team leading tenth of the season. The Talons responded on the next drive, gaining 63 yards on nine plays before finally scoring on a 16-yard pass to Berry.
The game took an interesting turn from there, as Adam Kennedy led the VooDoo on a 15-play, 40-yard drive that chewed up nearly 11 minutes off the clock. However, while attempting to center the ball between the uprights for a field goal attempt, Kennedy fumbled the snap and the ball found its way into the waiting hands of San Antonio nose guard Mark Weivoda. On the next play from scrimmage, Bassuener’s pass to the end zone was intercepted by VooDoo defensive back Travis Coleman who returned the ball to the San Antonio 17 yard line. Following a loss of ten yards on a pass to Beavers, the VooDoo attempted a 40 yard field goal that hit the right upright, sending the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Bassuener led the Talons on a seven-play, 39-yard drive to the VooDoo six yard line before defensive lineman Kwame Jordan tipped a pass in the air that was then intercepted by Carlese Franklin, a receiver stepping into the secondary due to injuries, for his second forced turnover of the contest. Adam Kennedy followed suit with a seven-play, 37-yard drive to the Talons ten yard line before being intercepted by Kelvin Rodgers, who set a new single-season franchise record with the interception, bringing his 2014 total to 12. Bassuener, determined to convert on this drive, led the Talons to the VooDoo eight yard line before kicker Garrett Lindholm drilled a 21-yard field goal to clinch the win for San Antonio.
Bassuener finished the game 20-of-35 for 204 yards and four touchdowns in the win, earning him the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Game Award. His counterpart, Kennedy, finished 25-of-42 for 205 yards and five total touchdowns. PJ Berry and Clinton Solomon also contributed for the Talons, as Berry collected 56 yards receiving and accounted for two scores, while Solomon ended his night with 77 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Chris Duvalt was the leading VooDoo receiver with 75 yards and two touchdowns. Kelvin Rodgers and Jamar Ransom both had nine tackles on the night for the Talons, while Carlese Franklin led New Orleans with ten.

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Spokane Shock (11-7) closed out their 2014 regular season with a 45-40 victory over the Portland Thunder (5-13) on Saturday night in the Moda Center.
Spokane starting quarterback Brian Zbydniewski finished the game 22-of-37 for 259 yards and five touchdowns through the air. Shock wide receiver Rashaad Carter continued his strong rookie campaign with a seven reception game for 91 yards and two touchdowns.
Portland quarterback Darron Thomas was held to 19 completions on 41 attempts for 200 yards and four touchdowns with three interceptions. Jamar Howard led the Thunder receiving corps with seven catches for 69 yards and one score.
A Shock fumbled snap on the first play of the game led to the Thunder taking a 7-0 lead on Thomas’ one-yard touchdown run to the left side. Spokane answered quickly, though, with Zbydniewski finishing off the following drive with a 16-yard touchdown strike to Nick Truesdell, tying the game 7-7. Spokane defensive back Bryant Nnabuife intercepted Thomas in the end zone to squash a Thunder scoring opportunity on the ensuing drive. A pair of turnovers on down closed out the first quarter with the score knotted up at 7-7.
Spokane opened up the second quarter with a score when Zbydniewski hit a wide open Carter over the middle of the field before sprinting into the end zone untouched to grab a 14-7 lead. With the Thunder threatening on the next drive, Shock defensive back Paul Stephens grabbed an interception in the end zone to negate the opportunity. Taylor Rowan extended the Shock lead to 17-7 on a 21-yard field goal after a good drive stalled out. Portland answered on their next possession when Thomas took a designed run off the right side in for a score; the missed extra point that followed kept the Shock up by four at 17-13. An interception thrown by Zbydniewski and an incomplete Thunder pass attempt as time expired sent the Shock into the locker room leading 17-13.

Thomas and the Thunder took the lead back early in the second half when he found Douglas McNeil III on a 27-yard touchdown pass to go up 20-17. After advancing the ball out to midfield on their next opportunity the Shock faced 3rd and 10 when Zbydniewski scrambled left and threw an interception to Thunder defensive back Eric Crocker, who returned the ball to the Spokane 11 yard line. Two plays later the Thunder capitalized with a touchdown from Thomas to Howard, putting Portland up 27-17 with just under three minutes left in the third quarter. Spokane would not go away quietly, though, as they struck for another touchdown on their next possession when Carter took a Zbydniewski 26 yards to the end zone, cutting the Thunder lead to 27-24. Terrance Sanders opened the final quarter with back-to-back heroic plays, breaking up a potential Thunder touchdown and hauling in a 16-yard pick-six to give the Shock the lead back 31-27. The Spokane defense forced a turnover on downs their next time out and gave the offense a chance to capitalize. After marching down to the Thunder 13 yard line Zbydniewski tossed a pass to a wide open Tennell over the middle who walked into the end zone to extend the Shock lead to 38-27. Portland capped their next drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass off a screen play to offensive lineman Stanley Daniels, pulling Portland with four at 38-34. After a slow start to their next drive the Shock managed to find the end zone on a 39-yard pass from Zbydniewski to Mike Washington, giving Spokane a 45-34 edge with just over three minutes left in the game. The Thunder closed out the scoring in the final minute on a touchdown pass from Thomas to Kevin Cummings, but a failed two-point conversion would keep the final score at 45-40.

SaberCats Topple Barnstormers, 72-43 San Jose closed out the regular season with an emphatic victory, behind QB Nathan Stanley's six touchdown passes

July 27,2014

San Jose Sabercats Press Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Sabercats (13-5) finished the regular season with a win over the Iowa Barnstormers (6-12), 72-43, on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines in front of 8,051 fans. Quarterback Nathan Stanley returned to form with a 314-yard and six-touchdown performance, and wide receiver Reggie Gray earned his Big Play nickname with three receiving scores and one kickoff return for a touchdown. SaberCats wide receiver Ben Nelson, playing his first game since May of 2012, picked up six catches for 105 yards in his return.
Hitting the turf first, Barnstormers quarterback Carson Coffman quickly moved the offense down field for a touchdown, finding wide receiver Julian Williams on a nine-yard out route to put the home team up 7-0. After a fumbled handoff attempt by San Jose was recovered by the Barnstormers, Coffman snuck into the end zone from one-yard out to extend the Iowa lead to 14 late in the first quarter.
Opening up the second quarter in the red zone, fullback Odie Armstrong got the SaberCats on the board with a one-yard run to trim the Iowa lead to 14-7. The San Jose defense came up big on Iowa’s next possession, with key pass breakups by defensive backs Simeon Castille and Ken Fontenette, and a fourth down sack from defensive end Joe Sykes gave the ball back to San Jose. After an impressive 33-yard catch-and-run by offensive lineman Rich Ranglin, quarterback Nathan Stanley got into the end zone from one-yard out to tie the game at 14. On the next offensive play, SaberCats defensive back David Hyland ripped the ball away from Iowa wide receiver Darius Reynolds to give the ball right back to the offense. Making good on the short field, Armstrong would find the end zone for the second time to give San Jose their first lead of the night at 21-14. The SaberCats defense would continue to disrupt the Barnstormers, forcing their second turnover on downs with one minute remaining in the half. One play later, Stanley looked deep for wide receiver Reggie Gray, and connected on an incredible diving catch from 32-yards to put San Jose up 28-14. After recovering an onside kick attempt, Coffman wasted little time finding Reynolds on the 12-yard fade route to bring Iowa back within seven points. Gray would continue his big second quarter, returning the ensuing kickoff to the Barnstormers ten-yard line followed by a nine-yard touchdown reception to put the SaberCats back up by 14. Ending the first half, Iowa kicker Ross Gornall knocked through a 43-yard field goal attempt to bring the halftime score to 35-24 in favor of the road team.

The SaberCats offense continued to click to start the third quarter, as Stanley found Gray for their third touchdown connection of the night. Coffman responded for the Barnstormers, finding Reynolds in the back of the end zone for the score. On the ensuing drive, Stanley found wide receiver Dominique Curry from ten-yards out to put the SaberCats back up by 18 at 49-31. Hoping to keep pace, Coffman looked deep on Iowa’s next possession, but Fontenette picked him off at the San Jose ten-yard line. SaberCats wide receiver Jason Willis, celebrating his 34th birthday, picked up his 12th touchdown of the season to put San Jose up 56-31 early in the fourth. The Barnstormers wouldn’t go away just yet, as Coffman connected with leading receiver Marco Thomas for a score, but SaberCats linebacker Francis Maka would block the extra point to keep the score at 56-37. However, Stanley continued to execute, throwing his 50th touchdown of the season to Curry, his 25th receiving score, for a 26-point advantage late in the fourth quarter. Hyland would take down Iowa returner Mervin Brookins in the end zone for a safety, and Iowa would tack on a late touchdown by wide receiver DeJay Lester to bring the final score to 72-43 in favor of the SaberCats.

Playoff Spot, Bragging Rights, On the Line in Keystone Collision

The AFL season is winding down.
With just one week left in the regular season, the playoff picture is coming into focus. The matchups of Arizona versus Portland, San Jose versus Spokane, and Orlando versus Pittsburgh are already set for the 2014 AFL Postseason. But the last wildcard spot and No. 4 seed in the American Conference is still up for grabs.
The Philadelphia Soul (9-8) and the Tampa Bay Storm (8-9) have everything riding on the last week of the season. With a win or Storm loss, the Soul can clinch the last playoff spot. But if Tampa Bay wins and Philadelphia falls, the Storm can steal the final wildcard spot. If this late-season drama wasn’t enough for the Soul, they will be playing their last game of the regular season in enemy territory against one of the hottest teams in the League.
Philadelphia will make the five-hour trip to Pittsburgh on Saturday in the ninth meeting in Keystone Collision history. The Soul held a 4-2 advantage in the series heading into this year, but the Power have turned the tables this season. The game between the two Pennsylvania teams is unlike the regular week-to-week AFL matchups.
“There certainly is a different atmosphere,” Power head coach Ron James said of the Keystone Collision rivalry. “There are a couple aspects to it when you’re playing an in-state rival in your own division. The biggest aspect of it is that it juices up the crowd. When we go down there, the Philadelphia crowd really likes to see Pittsburgh take their lumps so to speak. I think it’s the same thing here for our Pittsburgh crowd. They like to get after the Philadelphia folks as well. We’ve played them twice already, both were fantastic football games.”
The Power have won the previous two games against the Soul this season by a combined nine points. Pittsburgh took the first game 65-57 in Week 8, thanks to an eight-touchdown-to-no-interception performance by Power quarterback Tommy Grady. The Week 14 matchup was an instant classic.
Soul quarterback Dan Raudabaugh put Philadelphia up 56-54 after a three-yard touchdown pass to V’Keon Lacey with just 35 seconds left in the game. A failed onside kick by the Soul gave the Power prime field position at the Philadelphia 13-yard line. That gave kicker Julian Rauch more than enough room to connect on a 23-yard field goal as time expired, giving Pittsburgh a one-point victory. Close losses have doomed the Soul this season.
“We’ve struggled finishing games,” defensive back LaRico Stevenson said. “Not making plays when we’re supposed to make plays. It’s things that we’ve done to ourselves that have really hurt us. Not finishing plays, not catching balls when we’re supposed to, not making tackles when we’re supposed to, blowing coverage. All of the aspects of hurting a team, we’ve done it.”
Stevenson has been on both sides of the Keystone Collision. The five-year AFL veteran spent time with the Power in 2011 and 2012 before joining the Soul during the 2012 season. He endured a breakout season in his first campaign in Philadelphia, finishing with a career-high 74 tackles and seven interceptions in 2013.
“It was a different experience,” Stevenson said of his time in Pittsburgh. “Ever since I’ve been in Philadelphia, it’s a big notch up from where I was at. I love Pittsburgh, but man Philly is totally different. I love it here.”
Having played for both teams in the American East rivalry has given Stevenson a unique perspective.
“When I was there, the rivalry was intense,” Stevenson said. “Now that I’m here, the Pittsburgh fans and Philadelphia Soul fans are totally different. Our fans are great. What I’ve seen since I’ve been here, it’s made me love this game a little bit more every time I play against Pittsburgh. It’s totally different for me. I get pumped up for all the games, they’re all the same to me at the end of the day, but it’s going to be a little bit more for this one right here because of who we’re playing.”
Pittsburgh and Philadelphia have had remarkably different seasons. The Soul have the richer history of the two teams, winning the ArenaBowl in 2008 and reaching the championship game in 2012 and 2013, but Pittsburgh has flipped the script this season. The Power are in the midst of a franchise-record 11-game winning streak, with their last loss coming in Week 7 to a then-undefeated Cleveland Gladiators squad. Pittsburgh has the third-most wins in the League this season with a record of 14-3, while Philadelphia has yet to clinch a playoff spot. The turnaround season for Pittsburgh has had a monumental affect on the football-crazed city.
“I think it’s got to feel great for the organization and our fan base,” James said. “For me, I don’t know any different. I’m used to being in tough divisions out in the West with Spokane, Arizona, and San Jose, and now with Cleveland and Philadelphia. It’s great competition and I love it. Hopefully our fans get something special out of it. The fans here in Pittsburgh are rabid football fans. They’ve really been pining away for a winner here in the AFL and finally we’ve been able to give that to them. I know it’s been a special season for our fan base and our ownership group. We’re just hopeful that we could push this thing to the limit this year.”
The Soul aren’t accustomed to losing, but the team now has a chip on its shoulder when it matters most.
“It is a different feeling,” Stevenson said. “We are predominately one of the top teams. This year injuries and not finishing games has hurt us. Now that we’re at the bottom, scratching and fighting for the top, we want it much more. It makes your team hungrier, it makes us closer, it makes us know what are goals are. We want to beat this team much more.”
Rivalries are intense. Emotions run high, physicality is prevalent, and aggressive play is the norm, but on-field animosity won’t get in the way of a cherished friendship between the opposing head coaches.
“For me it’s always special when we play Philadelphia because one of my former players, Clint Dolezel, is the head coach at Philadelphia,” said James, who coached Dolezel in stints with the Houston ThunderBears and Las Vegas Gladiators. “I know Clint and his family real well. It’s always fun to play those guys. It’s always fun to compete against your friends.”
The Keystone Collision goes beyond the state of Pennsylvania. The entire AFL and its fan base will benefit from what is becoming one of the best rivalries in the game.
“It’s very important for us, for the League, and for the fans. It’s a great rivalry,” Stevenson said. “Pittsburgh has been real good this year, one of the top teams. We right now are trying to get to the playoffs. There are players on our team that have been in situations like this with a playoff atmosphere. We’re ready for it. With this game, it’s exciting right now, I’m telling you. It’s going to be a good game this weekend.”
