Johnson's hat trick runs REDBLACKS over Riders

Recap: Ottawa 35, Saskatchewan 13

OTTAWA -- If there was any uncertainty surrounding the Ottawa REDBLACKS’ starting running back, Jeremiah Johnson erased it on Sunday afternoon.
The second-year back scored three rushing touchdowns to lead the REDBLACKS to a 35-10 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders, showing exactly why the team put faith in him after recently releasing running back Chevon Walker.
Henry Burris was efficient and threw one touchdown pass plus scored another on the ground, while Johnson rushed for 92 yards on 12 carries. Justin Capiciotti had three sacks to lead a 10-sack effort for the REDBLACKS, who jumped out to a 14-0 lead then scored three touchdowns in a four-minute span between the third and fourth quarters.
Burris completed nine of his first 11 passing attempts, finishing his day 19-of-33 for 259 yards. Brett Smith went 6-for-10 for the Riders for 68 yards with a touchdown, but was pulled for Tino Sunseri halfway through the second quarter after throwing an interception.

The loss marked the Riders’ ninth straight to open the season, their third worst start in franchise history. The victory was a pivotal one for Ottawa, meanwhile, ending a mini two-game losing streak and pulling the REDBLACKS within a game of first place in the East behind both Toronto and Hamilton.
After shaking things up with the release of Brandon McDonald and veteran running back Walker, the REDBLACKS looked energized from the very first drive on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon at Ottawa’s TD Place.
Johnson and Burris teamed up for a first down with a pair of rushes out of the gate, then off play action the veteran pivot rolled out and hooked up with first-year REDBLACK Brad Sinopoli for a 34-yard catch and run into Rider territory.
On the next second down play, Burris quickly connected with the burner Price on a quick hitch and the veteran shiftily evaded a tackle and hit the corner to score a 37-yard touchdown, capping off a five-play, 81-yard scoring drive to give the REDBLACKS a 7-0 lead.
The major marked Price's first as a member of the REDBLACKS since arriving from Calgary in an off-season trade for linebacker Jasper Simmons.
Fans could barely get back in their seats before the REDBLACKS were on the board again. A quick smothering and sack of Smith put the ball right back in the hands of Burris, who had started 3-for-4 in the game after last week completing 32 of 36 passes in a loss to the Argos.
Burris again made quick work of a Rider defence that looked shaky early on. Continuing to hit the Green and White with high-percentage completions, this time it was Ernest Jackson getting the ball in space and making guys miss for a 25-yard gain to the Rider 53. The REDBLACK pivot hit on three of his next four passes to Jackson, Price and Scott MacDonnell, then Johnson finished off the drive by scoring on a draw play from seven yards out.
The REDBLACKS couldn’t have made a bolder statement just minutes into the game, owning a 14-0 lead on the strength of 151 passing yards through the air.
After being out-gained 170-29 in first-quarter offensive yardage, the Riders made the second quarter theirs to strike back. Ottawa’s fast-release offence hit a snag as the Rider ‘D’ tightened up the tackling, while the special teams unit got to rookie punter Ronnie Pfeffer, playing his first game since joining the REDBLACKS, with a blocked punt.

Scott McHenry came up with the block and Dan West recovered it, setting the Riders up deep in REDBLACKS territory. A time count violation made second down more difficult than it needed to be, but it wasn’t enough to faze the young gunslinger.
Smith, just 23 and in his third career start, threw the corner route with perfection to rookie receiver Naaman Roosevelt for the 10-yard touchdown. The Riders added the two-point conversion so after two punt singles and the sudden major, the Riders trailed only 14-10 in the second quarter.
The catch was Roosevelt’s third of the game and his first career touchdown in the 27-year-old’s first career CFL start.
The Riders continued to turn the momentum in their favour, this time on a play by their defence. Greg Ellingson caught a pass over the middle but had it punched loose by the veteran Tristan Jackson, while there to pick it up was rookie linebacker Jeff Knox Jr.
A first down scramble by Smith and a 15-yard penalty for a late hit against Ottawa’s Antoine Pruneau moved the Rider offence to the 16, but on the ensuing play it became all for not. Smith evaded pressure and beat the defence outside, but his pass to the end zone was picked off by defensive back Abdul Kanneh to put a sudden halt to both the drive and the Riders’ momentum.
Smith paid for the mistake despite completing six of his first 10 passing attempts, the Riders electing to switch to backup Sunseri immediately after. It appeared the change had sparked something for Saskatchewan’s offence, but as soon as Ryan Smith scored on a catch-and-run the score was nullified by a holding penalty. Then Paul McCallum hit the upright on a 37-yard field goal try, leaving the Riders empty-handed heading into the half.

Price Scores his First REDBLACK TD
A chess match ensued throughout most of the quarter as neither offence could muster up anything game-changing – until late in the frame.
Jackson caught a 29-yard pass to set up Johnson’s second touchdown run of the game, then Damaso Munoz’s forced fumble – recovered by Malik Jackson – set up a 35-yard rushing touchdown by Johnson for his third of the game.
A fumble by Steven Miller on the ensuing kickoff rubbed salt in the Riders’ wound, leading to a Burris one-yard plunge to put the game well out of reach.
The Riders did manage some damage on defence late, forcing an interception on Burris – the veteran pivot’s first in 189 passing attempts. A McCallum field goal rounded out the scoring, as the Riders suffered their second most lopsided loss of the season next to a 30-5 loss to Edmonton.
Saskatchewan is back in action next Sunday in a matchup on Mark's Labour Day Weekend against the Bombers back at home, one most would consider a must-win game for Corey Chamblin's club which remains three wins out of a playoff spot. The REDBLACKS on the other hand will enjoy the victory over a bye week before visiting BC on Sunday, Sept. 13.

Dominant Stampeders defence leads way over Bombers

Recap: Calgary 36, Winnipeg 8

WINNIPEG -- The Calgary Stampeders continued to prove themselves as the most consistent team in the CFL’s West Division as they squashed the Winnipeg Blue Bombers by a score of 36-8 on Saturday evening at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg.
The Stampeders defence, led by savvy veteran coordinator Rich Stubler, proved to be too much to handle for the inexperienced quarterback Robert Marve as he was held to 94 passing yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
Marve, who started in place of the injured Drew Willy, was dealt with pressure in his face all day as Brandon Boudreaux led the way with two sacks, while Deron Mayo, Micah Johnson and Freddie Bishop III also contributed with a sack each.
Calgary defensive back Jamar Wall was an anchor in the secondary and contributed with a pick-six which seemed to seal the deal in this contest. Veteran leader Keon Raymond also added an interception.
The defensive dominance gave 25-year-old signal-caller Bo Levi Mitchell and the offence time to get it going as they only held an 8-3 lead at halftime. While the Blue Bomber defence was also stout in the first half, it just couldn’t hold back Calgary’s offensive weapons all game long, clearly tiring from spending so much of the game on the field.
Mitchell finished 19 of 26 on the day, racking up 314 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
Eric Rogers continued his outstanding breakout season as he piled up seven catches for 152 yards through the air. The second-year receiver now has 812 receiving yards on the season.
Mitchell wasted no time to start the game hooking up with his favourite target Rogers on the first play from scrimmage deep down the sideline for a 36-yard gain. A few plays later, Mitchell was picked off the back of the end zone by defensive back Matt Bucknor.

» Preview: Bombers dial up the urgency
In his second start of season, the former Purdue Boilermaker looked to the steady hands of veteran pass catcher Clarence Denmark to begin the game. The fifth year slot back caught the first two passes of the game, which created tunnel vision for his inexperienced quarterback, who broke the cardinal rule of quarterbacks as he rolled out to his right and threw across his body to the left and got picked off by Raymond as he looked to Denmark. The interception led to a seven-yard touchdown pass by Mitchell to Tory Harrison, who had a modest 60 rushing yards on the day. Mitchell also completed the two point conversion on a quick out to Rogers to make it 8-0 Calgary.
Mitchell continued to feed Rogers the ball as he caught a 27-yard pass over the middle to move the sticks. After a Winnipeg sack by former Buffalo Bill Jamaal Westerman, the Stamps were forced to punt but former Simon Fraser University standout Derek Jones blocked the punt setting the Bombers up with great field position.
A good pick up off the read-option from Marve put Winnipeg in good enough field position to for a field-goal to end the first quarter as they trailed the Stamps 8-3.
Mitchell looked to end this second quarter offensive drought as he found Rogers once again for a 36-yard gain. This catch put Rogers up over 100 receiving yards on the day. What looked like a potential scoring drive was stopped by the Bomber D as Justin Cole came up with a crucial sack to force another punt.
Winnipeg’s Bryant Turner Jr. recorded his first CFL sack with about 30 seconds left in the half before Calgary was forced to punt the ball with little time remaining.
The defensive battle continued to begin the second half as Marve was picked off by Wall who took it all the way to house for a pick-six. This extended Calgary’s lead to 15-3.
The Stamps didn’t look to let up as Mitchell constructed a drive with passes to Rogers and Anthony Parker and a few rushes by Harrison to set up an easy waltz-in goal-line touchdown by the Hawaiian Bryant Moniz. This gave Calgary a commanding 23-3 lead.
Stubler has been a nightmare for inexperienced quarterbacks in his tenured career and Marve was no different as he was unable to handle the rush which resulted in five sacks in the game.
However, Marve and company were able to tack on a field goal late in the third quarter.
The Calgary offence has always shown quick strike ability and really put it on display to begin the fourth quarter and Mitchell connected with Lemar Durant followed by an outstanding juggling catch by Jeff Fuller for the score.
Former NFL second-round pick Bryan Brohm came on in relief of the struggling Marve late in the fourth quarter. Brohm had a very successful career at the University of Louisville but was unable to generate any offence in this contest.
The West Division leading Calgary Stampeders will take their 7-2 record home to McMahon Stadium to face the Edmonton Eskimos in which should be a spirited affair on Monday Night Football. The now 3-6 Blue Bombers will head to Saskatchewan to take on the Roughriders on Sunday.

Franklin, Eskimos power past Argos in fourth

EDMONTON-- James Franklin did not disappoint in his first CFL start as the Edmonton Eskimos put up 21 points in the fourth quarter to surge past the Toronto Argonauts 38-15 at Commonwealth Stadium.

» Preview: Franklin makes debut
Franklin was spectacular in his debut, throwing 29-for-38 for 335 yards and rushing for a game high 51 yards on four carries. He threw for one touchdown and added another rushing major.
The quarterback's favourite target of the night appeared to be Derel Walker who was equally impressive with seven catches for a game high 164 yards and one touchdown.
Trevor Harris went 20-for-26 with one interception and no touchdown passes.
Franklin's first quarter as a starting quarterback was virtually flawless.
On his first drive in his first CFL start, Franklin completed his first seven passes to advance his team to the red zone and capped off the drive by rushing 18 yards into the end zone.
Franklin continued to impress in the first quarter by connecting with Derel Walker for a 51-yard pass on Edmonton’s second drive of the game.  Unable to finish the drive with another touchdown, the Eskimos settled for a 23-yard field goal by Grant Shaw at the end of the quarter to put them up 10-0.
Toronto finally worked its way into scoring range, setting up Swayze Waters for a 36-yard field goal attempt. However, the kicker uncharacteristically hit the ball wide and the Argos were only able to pick up a single.
The Argonauts were finally able to crack the league's best defence at the end of the second quarter after a six play, 60 yard scoring drive.  Harris connected with Diontae Spencer for a 28-yard pass to put the Argos a yard short of the end zone. A short rush by Adrian McPherson with less than a minute left on the clock cut the Eskimos lead to 11-8 and put the Argos right back in the game at half.
Franklin had an impressive first half in his CFL debut, completing 79 per cent of his pass attempts for 204 passing yards.
Franklin continued to dazzle in the second half by throwing a 53-yard pass to Derel Walker which lead to a 21-yard field goal.  Shaw nailed his third field goal of the game on the next drive, this time from 32 yards out, to increase the Eskimos grip over the Argos to lead by nine.
But the comeback kids would not go down easily and sought to spoil Franklins’ debut.
A costly pass interference call against the Eskimos advanced the Argos within striking distance of the end zone to set up a one yard pass to Vidal Hazelton for a major with just seconds left in the quarter to end the third at 17-15.
Toronto has become infamous for its fourth quarter comebacks, but was unable to pull out a come from behind victory as the Eskimos pulled away in the final 15 minutes.
Kendial Lawrence returned a 65-yard punt for a touchdown with 10:52 remaining to regain the Esks nine-point lead and to shift momentum in favour of Edmonton. The touchdown ignited the Eskimos as they continued to charge full throttle at the Argos.

On the next drive, Franklin rushed 12 yards for a pivotal first down on second and long to put the Esks at the Toronto eight-yard line. He then found Walker in the corner of the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown to cap off a seven play, 48-yard drive to extend the lead.
But the Eskimos weren't done their fourth quarter scoring there and continued to put the game out of reach of the Argonauts with an interception by Aaron Grymes that was returned for 54 yards.  Jordan Lynch then took over the drive, rushing nine yards for the touchdown.
The Argonauts will seek redemption when they travel to the Hammer on Sept. 7 to face the rival Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Tim Hortons Field while the Edmonton Eskimos pay a visit to their western opponents, the Calgary Stampeders, on Sept. 7 at McMahon Stadium.

Streak Busters: Als hand Ticats first loss at THF

HAMILTON -- It was a night of firsts in Hamilton.
The Montreal Alouettes have become the first road team to win a game at Tim Hortons Field, defeating the Tiger-Cats 26-23 on Thursday Night.
Thursday night also marked the first game of Jim Popp's third stint as Alouettes head coach, a role he took over last week after dismissing Tom Higgins from his job as sideline boss.
While the first quarter is usually Hamilton’s bread-and-butter – especially at home – it was the visitors who made the early statement.
Aided by a drive-extending pass interference penalty on Johnny Sears, Cato hooked up with tailback Brandon Rutley for a 65-yard catch-and-run touchdown to give the Als a 7-0 lead.

On the play, Cato managed to avoid what seemed to be a sure sack by the Ticats defensive front and dump a short pass out to Rutley who turned on the jets for the score.
The major was Rutley’s first this season, and first since 2012 when he hauled in a pass from Henry Burris as a member of the Ticats.
The two teams would then exchange field goals on their respective ensuing drives. Hamilton’s Justin Medlock split the uprights from 37 yards out to bring the Ticats within four, however, Montreal kicker Boris Bede connected from 31 yards to restore the Als’ lead back to seven.
But Montreal’s lead would be short-lived.
With the second quarter underway, the Ticats embarked on a nine-play, 88-yard drive that would culminate on an eight-yard touchdown strike from Collaros to Luke Tasker.
The drive saw Collaros connect on five of his six passes, twice finding Tasker.
It was Tasker’s third touchdown of the year.
With the two teams going punch for punch in the game’s opening 30 minutes, an eventful first half in the Hammer took an unfortunate turn when Cato was knocked out of the game with an apparent lower-body injury.
He was able to walk off the field with some help from the Alouettes trainers and was promptly escorted to the locker room. TSN later reported that Cato’s status for the remainder of the game was ‘uncertain’.
He was replaced by Tanner Marsh, who was appearing in just his second game this season as a result of a sprained knee suffered in training camp.
Marsh made his return to action last week against BC, and helped lead the Als to a 23-13 win over the Lions.
He continued to do his part on the offensive side of the ball on Thursday, as he completed Cato’s shortened drive by punching one in from one-yard out for his second TD of the year.
A penalty-filled drive capped off the first half, but not before Medlock could cut Montreal’s lead to five thanks to a 49-yard field goal, his second of the night.
The Als took a five point lead into the break. Hamilton’s deficit marked the first time this season they trailed at the half.
Prior to exiting, Cato completed four of his seven passes for 115 yards and a touchdown pass. Collaros, on the other hand, was solid. The pivot was stellar, completing 12 of his 16 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown.
Whatever angst was cooked up in the first 30 minutes didn't translate into the third quarter, as both teams apppeared timid on the offensive side of the ball.
Both teams were unable to reach the endzone in the third frame, instead exchanging field goals, while Medlock also conceded a safety to make it 23-16 Montreal heading into the fourth quarter.
But the quiet times were short-lived, as Collaros orchestrated an impressive fourth-quarter drive, leading the Ticats 72 yards downfield on eight plays, the last of which saw backup QB Jeff Matthews score on a one-yard plunge for six points. Medlock's ensuing extra point would tie the game at 23.
However, with just over a minute to play in the game, Bede connected on a 27-yard field goal to give the Als a 26-23 lead.
The Ticats looked primed to return the the favour and send the game into overtime, but Collaros saw his pass intercepted by Kyries Hebert, stopping any hopes of a Ticats comeback.
Next week, the Als will return home to face the Lions, while the Ticats will welcome the Argonauts for the Labour Day Classic.
