Ducks Rally Past Kings
The Ducks scored four unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Kings 4-2.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Facing a two-goal deficit and a 112-minute scoring drought heading into the third period against their biggest rivals, the Anaheim Ducks realized their whole season might be affected by the way they finished Friday night.
Corey Perry and the Ducks did everything the right way, and they reaped an impressive reward in the Freeway Faceoff.
Perry scored the tiebreaking goal with 8:39 to play, and Anaheim furiously rallied for a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.
Ryan Kesler and Emerson Etem scored 90 seconds apart early in the third period for the Ducks, who beat the defending Stanley Cup champions for the third time in four lively meetings this season. That didn't seem likely when Anaheim trudged off its ice trailing 2-0 after two periods, unable to cash in on chances against the tenacious Kings.
"It's just sticking with your game plan," said Perry, who put his second goal into an empty net in the final minute. "We're going out, we're doing all the right things, and it's eventually going to break the right way for us. It gives us confidence, that's for sure. But you're not going to come back from 2-0 in the third every single night."
Actually, the Ducks have done it five times this season -- twice against the Kings.
Perry secured the seventh 25-goal season of his NHL career when he slipped past two Kings to put home a bouncing puck dropped into the slot by captain Ryan Getzlaf. It wasn't exactly a classic Getzlaf-to-Perry connection, but Perry alertly followed Kyle Palmieri's lead block and scored.
"It was tape to tape, I guess you could say," Perry said with a laugh.
"Oh, it was a great pass, and Perry just had to tap it into the net," Getzlaf added.
Perry then scored with 23.6 seconds left on a high-arcing shot to cap a joyous third period for the Ducks, who have won four of five to boost their Pacific Division lead to 12 points.
"I think this team turned the corner tonight," said Kesler, whose opening goal was his first point in 10 games. "That's the kind of hockey we need to be playing right now."
Trevor Lewis and Brayden McNabb scored for the Kings, who have lost two straight after an eight-game surge. Martin Jones stopped 28 shots in his first start since Jan. 14 in place of Jonathan Quick, who had started 16 straight games.
John Gibson made 20 saves while appearing in his ninth straight game for Anaheim.
While the Ducks enjoyed their comeback, the Kings lamented their late fold.
"We got away from the things that were winning us games previously," Jeff Carter said. "This was a tough one. ... At this point of the year when we're blowing third-period leads, it's tough to take because of the points we need right now."
This rivalry series concludes March 18, but the title-contending rivals easily could meet again in the postseason. Anaheim has won seven of the last eight regular-season meetings overall, but Los Angeles claimed a bruising seven-game series in the second round last spring.
"The Ducks are a good team, and there's a reason they've won the division for a couple of years in a row now," Kings captain Dustin Brown said. "We didn't manage the puck very well tonight."
Defenseman Andrej Sekera made his debut for the Kings two days after they acquired the puck-moving veteran from Carolina. He teamed with former Buffalo teammate Robyn Regehr.
Lewis put Los Angeles ahead late in the first period, ending a 132-minute stretch of scoreless hockey for the champs. The Kings didn't even manage a shot in the first 10 1/2 minutes of a back-and-forth second period until McNabb's long fling through traffic deflected off Hampus Lindholm for his first goal since Dec. 26, 2011, for Buffalo, ending a 79-game drought.
Kesler finally ended the Ducks' three-game scoreless skid at 116 minutes, 40 seconds, and the crowd hadn't quieted when Etem cashed in on a strong forecheck by Jiri Sekac, who earned his first point with his new team.

Game notes

Chris Wagner appeared in his third NHL game and his first since Nov. 15, centering Anaheim's fourth line in the absence of Nate Thompson, who missed his second straight game with a lower-body injury. ... Jamie McBain was a healthy scratch to make room for Sekera on Los Angeles' blue line.... Frederik Andersen returned to uniform, backing up Gibson after missing eight games with an upper-body injury. The Danish goalie still ranks fifth in the NHL with 29 victories.

Steven Stamkos scored two goals as the Lightning defeated the Blackhawks 4-0.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Ben Bishop quieted a large crowd of Chicago Blackhawks fans that made their way to Florida.
Bishop made 28 saves for his second shutout, Steven Stamkos scored two goals, and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Blackhawks 4-0 on Friday night.
More than half of the announced sellout of 19,204 loudly rooted for the Blackhawks, many wearing Chicago's home red jersey.
"I didn't see any red," Bishop said with a laugh. "It's fun to keep those guys quiet."
Brian Boyle and Ryan Callahan also scored for the Lightning, who returned home after a 3-2 road trip against Western Conference teams.
"A solid game by all four lines, the D, and Bish played extremely well," Stamkos said.
Stamkos has 11 goals and 17 points in nine games against Chicago.
Chicago backup goalie Scott Darling stopped 25 shots.
The Blackhawks beat Florida 3-0 Thursday in their first game since losing leading scorer Patrick Kane, placed on long-term injured reserve Wednesday with a broken left collarbone suffered in Tuesday's 3-2 shootout win over the Panthers.
While the Lightning were coming off a four-day break, Chicago was playing its third game over that stretch.
"No excuses," Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith. "It wasn't our best game."
Boyle opened the scoring in the second period from the slot off a nifty pass from behind the net by Jonathan Drouin. Stamkos made it 2-0 after deflecting Jason Garrison's shot from just inside the blue line with 2:07 left in the second. He added his 34th goal on a late third-period power play.
Callahan put the Lightning ahead 3-0 by redirecting Valtteri Filppula's pass during a power play in the third period.
Tampa Bay's second-ranked home penalty-killing unit killed off three Chicago power plays during the first session. Bishop made six saves on the Blackhawks' third try late in the period.
Boyle offered the game puck to Bishop, who didn't want it.
"He's a pretty unselfish guy," Boyle said. "He wants to win. The No. 1 star for a reason."
Keith was given four minutes for high-sticking Cedric Paquette midway through the first, but the Blackhawks' road-best penalty killers limited Tampa Bay to two shots.
The Blackhawks got a break when Nikita Kucherov beat Darling just seconds after the first period ended.

Game notes

Chicago acquired D Kimmo Timonen from Philadelphia for a 2015 second-round draft pick and a conditional 2016 fourth-rounder. Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman said he is also looking to add a forward before the trade deadline. ... Paquette was briefly out for treatment after getting cut around the mouth on Keith's high stick. ... Garrison had two assists. ... Tampa Bay D Victor Hedman played one day after leaving practice early due to an undisclosed problem and had an assist.

Halak, Islanders Edge Flames
Jaroslav Halak stopped 27 shots in the Islanders' 2-1 win over the Flames.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Jaroslav Halak had a chance at a shutout and an empty-net goal in the final minute against the Calgary Flames. He had to settle for a prominent place in the New York Islanders' record book.
Halak set the team mark with his 33rd win of the season, and Ryan Strome and Cal Clutterbuck provided just enough offense to lift New York to a 2-1 victory over the Flames on Friday night.
With the Islanders protecting a 1-0 lead in the final seconds, Halak cleared the puck down the ice but it was stopped well before it got close to the empty Flames net. Soon after New York doubled its advantage, Josh Jooris ruined the shutout bid and made it a tense one-goal affair again.
"I'm not happy about it, but we got the goal and we won 2-1," Halak said. "They don't give up. They play until the last second. I was glad when it was over.
"I wanted to have a shutout. I wasn't thinking about a goal, but I didn't get either of them. I got a win, so that's a good thing, right?"
That put the Islanders two points ahead of the rival New York Rangers, who drew even with them atop the Metropolitan Division on Thursday.
"We just focused on trying to win," Islanders captain John Tavares said. "We obviously see the standings. We know we're jockeying for positioning."
Halak stopped 26 shots, beaten only by Jooris with 20.9 seconds left. The Islanders had made it 2-0 with 41.3 seconds remaining on Cal Clutterbuck's empty-net goal.
It was fitting because Clutterbuck had a goal waved off 4:25 into the third period when the officials ruled that Brock Nelson had interfered with Flames goalie Karri Ramo in the crease.
"It happens," Tavares said. "We fought hard for that, but we stuck with it. It was good to see Clutter get rewarded at the end."
Ramo stopped 37 shots for the Flames, who without injured captain and leading scorer Mark Giordano missed a chance to move into a wild-card position in the Western Conference playoff race. Ramo's only blemish was Strome's early goal, the first power-play tally Calgary has allowed in exactly a month.
"We didn't give them much," Ramo said. "We played good, we battled. Just wasn't enough.
"Guys were playing more minutes and stepping up without Gio. We tried hard."
Calgary dropped to 1-2 on its seven-game road trip. The Flames lost 1-0 to the Rangers on Tuesday.
The Islanders took a 1-0 lead in a most unusual way, scoring the first power-play goal against the Flames in 14 games.
Tavares was stopped by Ramo, but the puck came back out front to Strome in the slot for his 14th goal. Calgary had gone a team-record 13 games without allowing a man-advantage goal. The streak of penalty-kills was snapped at 26, dating to Jan. 27 against Buffalo.
Strome has five goals in eight games.
"You go to the dirty areas and just kind of bang away. We'll take them any way we can get them," Strome said. "We talked about how they haven't really given up many goals, never mind the power play.
"It wasn't the prettiest goal, but we'll take it."
New York had the better of the play in the opening period and held a 15-7 edge in shots, but one of Calgary's attempts was Michael Ferland's failed penalty shot after he was impeded on a breakaway by defenseman Johnny Boychuk with 6:20 left.
Both teams had brief flurries in the second. Calgary got back to its strong penalty killing and held the Islanders' power play in check during its second advantage of the first period and the only one they had in the second frame.
New York, which held an 11-8 edge in shots in the middle period, began the third short-handed. The Islanders killed the penalty despite pressure by the Flames on Halak just before Lubomir Visnovsky left the box.
"They have one of the fastest team in the league," Flames coach Bob Hartley said. "The pace was real quick and it was tough to generate."
The task became more difficult without the defenseman Giordano, who skated in pregame warmups after being injured Wednesday in a 3-1 win at New Jersey.
"Gio is our captain and a warrior," Hartley said. "When Mark says he can't play, that says a lot. He really wanted to, but couldn't."

Game notes

Halak had shared the win record with Billy Smith, Chris Osgood, and Rick DiPietro. ... Ferland has no goals in 13 career NHL games. ... The Islanders will finish a four-game homestand Saturday vs. Carolina before a four-game trip.
