CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Gladiators have been assigned 2014 All-Arena defensive back Marrio Norman, the League office announced today.
Norman (6-1, 205, Coastal Carolina) earned First Team All-Arena honors after collecting a career-high 95.5 tackles and set a Gladiators franchise record with 12 interceptions last season before being scooped up by the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. The fourth-year pro played a key role in guiding Cleveland to a historic 17-1 regular season in 2014, headlining one of the hardest hitting secondaries in the AFL. In three seasons in the League, Norman has totaled 24 interceptions, including 19 with the Gladiators.
The former All-Big South selection recorded 53 tackles and five interceptions as a junior at Coastal Carolina in 2007. He saw action in five games as a senior due to injury, posting 14 tackles and one interception. Since turning pro, he has also spent time with the AFL’s Georgia Force and Orlando Predators.

Storm Assigned Three as Regular Season Winds Down

July 31,2015

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Storm have acquired defensive linemen Rony Barrow and David Washington along with defensive back Nick Addison, announced Storm Vice President of Football Operations Jeff Gooch.
“The team needed to boost the defense for the final two games of the season,” said Gooch. “We believe that all three of the players can make a difference as we push forward to the playoffs.”
Addison (6-2, 185, Bethune-Cookman) rejoins the Storm after playing with the team earlier in the season. The Spoto High School (Riverview, FL) product played in four games for the Storm, recording 14 tackles and four pass breakups. He began his professional career with the Houston Texans in 2014.
Barrow (6-2, 295, Bethune-Cookman) joins the Storm for his rookie season in the Arena Football League. The Brooklyn, New York native began his collegiate career at Nassau Community College before settling in at Bethune-Cookman University. Barrow started in 23-of-25 games for the Wildcats, tallying 75 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, five sacks and an interception. He earned All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference honors for his performance during his senior season.
Washington (6-2, 320, Faulkner) enters his rookie season in the AFL with the Storm. He played at Hinds Community College before transferring to Faulkner University. Washington played in 23 games for Eagles, recording 59 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and three pass breakups.
To make room on the roster, the team placed Jack linebacker Rick-J Hill, wide receiver Phillip Barnett, and offensive lineman Alfred McCullough on injured reserve.

LAS VEGAS – A pair of playoff teams now have open roster spots after Arizona Rattlers kick returner AJ Cruz and Orlando Predators offensive lineman Erle Ladson signed contracts with NFL teams earlier this week.
Cruz (5-9, 195, Brown) signed a contract with the Chicago Bears on Monday after seeing action in 12 games with the Rattlers this season. The second-year pro was scooped up from the LA KISS in a move that paid dividends for the three-time defending ArenaBowl champs. Cruz returned six kickoffs for touchdowns in 2015 – the second-highest single-season total in League history – in addition to tallying 45.5 tackles, six pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery at Jack linebacker, as well as hauling in 27 passes for 220 yards and five touchdowns as a receiver.
Ladson (6-6, 345, Delaware) joined the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday after playing in 12 games along the offensive line for the Predators this season. He played collegiately at the University of Delaware, where he started the final 23 contests of his career at left tackle. Prior to joining the Predators, Ladson began his professional football career as an undrafted free agent with the Oakland Raiders in 2014.

SaberCats, Rattlers Vie for Home Field Advantage on CBS Sports Network

July 31, 2015

By ANDY SROKA
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The playoffs slide another week closer in Week 19, but not before the San Jose Sabercats (15-1) attempt to lock down home field advantage in the postseason in a game against National Conference rivals, the Arizona Rattlers (13-3). Kickoff is set for 10:30 p.m. ET from the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., and can be seen live on the CBS Sports Network.
Basketball has the Lakers and the Celtics. Baseball has the Yankees and the Red Sox. Hockey has the Blackhawks and the Red Wings. Soccer has Barcelona and Real Madrid. Pro wrestling has The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin. But for us, Arena Football fans, the SaberCats and the Rattlers is as good as it gets.
The two teams have met in three straight playoffs. Friday night, they battle again for a sneak peek at the perennial postseason encounter. Really, this game isn’t critical to the AFL’s playoff picture. San Jose is a win away from clinching home field advantage through the playoffs, but regardless, both teams are guaranteed a berth in the playoffs and are skilled enough to make a real run at the ArenaBowl no matter where they’re seeded or who they’re playing.
And here’s why: these teams employ rosters stacked with talent. They are the biggest players in the offseason seemingly every year and have two of the League’s best quarterbacks. Over the course of history, the SaberCats have owned a slight edge in their regular season meetings with Arizona, including win in Phoenix earlier this season. But it’s obvious, bearing their last three playoff contests in mind, the Rattlers are on top until proven otherwise. In case you needed reminding, the Rattlers have won back-to-back-to-back ArenaBowls. On each of those three paths to championships, they ditched San Jose at the side of the road – that’s three straight years the SaberCats have fallen to their biggest rivals in an elimination game.
That stings.
Heading into 2015, San Jose knew it couldn’t afford to die the same death it had the previous three seasons. It would just hurt too much. So, they went out and acquired All-Arena quarterback Erik Meyer. Though he spent some time on the shelf this season with an injury, missing three starts, Meyer has added some much needed stability at the position for San Jose. Despite having been sacked 25 times in 2015, he’s managed to maintain a passer rating of 123.53 this season. That’s the highest rating among those not named Randy Hippeard, though, Orlando’s Hippeard has only been able to start nine games this year compared to Meyer’s 13.
One would think a quarterback who endures many-a-sack is prone to the pick, but not in Meyer’s case. He’s still the same passer that opened the 2013 season without throwing an interception in his first 193 attempts that year, an AFL record. Meyer has been intercepted six times in 478 pass attempts this season. Very impressive. And half of them came in a weird and wild overtime loss to the LA KISS. With that kind of efficiency, Meyer and his offense grant their defense behind them the time to apply the pressure and force some turnovers. They’re the only team in the League with two players who have accumulated at least 10 sacks each this year, Francis Maka and Jason Stewart have notched 10.5 and 10 sacks, respectively. But don’t make the mistake of thinking they’re the only two your favorite team’s quarterback has to worry about. Luis Vasquez and Donte Paige-Moss have chipped into the League-leading 40 sacks San Jose has made in 2015, scaring passers on a week-to-week basis.
And then there’s Ken Fontenette. In a season where Jacksonville’s Joe Sykes is shattering his own sacks record and Arizona’s Jeremy Kellem is climbing all-time interceptions charts, Fontenette might be enjoying one of the best seasons we have ever seen from a defender. In his last two games, the defensive back has tallied a surreal 34.5 tackles combined. With 138.5 on the year, Fontenette already has the mark for the second-most in a single-season ever. And yet, even with all that tackling, he’s still crafty enough to have intercepted 12 passes this year, one behind the aforementioned Kellem for the League-lead.
So, you’d think San Jose will be walking into the SAP Center with oodles of confidence in a last minute trial before the real test begins in a couple of weeks.
Maybe not.
The last time most of these players saw Nick Davila, they left Phoenix dejected after a conference finals loss last season. Davila broke his big toe before the teams’ last meeting in Week 6 and did not play in the game. It goes without saying how much better he makes the reigning champions. In other words, Fontenette, Maka, Stewart all had to witness Davila throw eight touchdowns and rush for two more in a devastating season-ending defeat.
Though he’s been healthy for the last two months now, Davila still seems like he’s shaking some of the last remnants of rust off. He’s thrown five picks in his last three games. He’s still been good, no doubt, but the SaberCats have the opportunity to seize the Rattlers’ offense at one of its most vulnerable times in recent memory. Davila is still priming for postseason play, his offensive line allowed him to be sacked four times two weeks ago, and one of his favored options at wideout and electric return man, AJ Cruz, is off to the NFL.
The team may need to lean a little more on its defense than it has in the past.
It certainly has the bodies to do so. While two of the League’s best offenses are squaring off Friday night, the matchup between the best two scoring defenses, statistically, provides the most intriguing angle to an already must-see game.
In addition to Kellem, Marquis Floyd and Arkeith Brown prowl Arizona’s secondary and have poached 23 of the team’s 24 interceptions in 2015. But intercepting Meyers is tough and they can’t cling to the hope that it’ll happen. They have to do their best to cover wide receiver Reggie Gray who just became San Jose’s all-time leader in receptions and touchdown catches. He leads the League with 41 touchdown receptions this year and requires a defense’s full attention if you don’t want him to burn you – and he might anyway.
Even if these squads manage to miss each other in the 2015 playoffs, watching two teams at this caliber meet on the turf is always a treat for Arena Football fans.
Week 19’s main event signals the playoffs have already started.

Sharks Jump Preds as Soul Narrow Gap on Rattlers in AFL Media Poll

LAS VEGAS – The playoff-bound Jacksonville Sharks (9-7) moved up one spot to No. 4 in the latest AFL Media Poll, leapfrogging their Week 19 opponents, the South Division-leading Orlando Predators (10-6). After rolling past the Tampa Bay Storm (6-10), 63-16, last week, the Sharks clinched a playoff spot and a chance to unseat the Predators for the division lead this Saturday. However, a well-rested Orlando team is likely more than prepared to host the red-hot Sharks. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET Saturday on ESPN3.
A close call with the LA KISS (4-12) in Week 18 shrunk the Arizona Rattlers (13-3) lead over the Philadelphia Soul (13-3) in the AFL Media Poll down to just two points. There is sure to be a shakeup next week, one way or another, as the Rattlers travel to the Bay for a showdown with their most storied rival, the top-ranked San Jose Sabercats (15-1). A win for the Rattlers would keep them in the hunt for home field advantage and surely win over more than a handful of first-place votes, while a loss would secure the top seed in the National Conference for San Jose and likely drop the Rattlers down the Media rankings in the process. Kickoff for this year’s Arena Football Hall of Fame Game in San Jose is set for 10:30 p.m. ET Friday night on CBS Sports Network. The No. 3-ranked Soul return from their Week 18 bye to host the New Orleans VooDoo at 4:00 p.m. ET Sunday afternoon on ESPN3.
The AFL Media Poll consists of voters from television, radio, and newspaper outlets who regularly cover the League in their respective markets, along with national personalities from ESPN and CBS Sports, who provide game and studio commentary about the Arena Football League.

LAS VEGAS – Jacksonville Sharks quarterback Tommy Grady has been awarded Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week, while Sharks defensive end Joe Sykes has been awarded Riddell Defensive Player of the Week, and Arizona Rattlers Mac linebacker Tyre Glasper has been awarded J. Lewis Small Playmaker of the Week for Week 18 of the 2015 Arena Football League season. In addition to these awards, the AFL is also awarding the Cutters Catch of the Week and AFL Highlight of the Week. The Cutters Catch of the Week has also been awarded to Glasper, while the AFL Highlight of the Week has been awarded to Portland Thunder wide receiver Duane Brooks.
RUSSELL ATHLETIC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Grady (6-7, 250, Utah) passed for 179 yards and five touchdowns in the Sharks’ 63-16 rout of the Tampa Bay Storm in Week 18. The former League MVP ranks 10th in League history with 26,965 career passing yards, 35 yards shy of 27,000. He is now also two passing touchdowns shy of 600 for his career.
RIDDELL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sykes (6-5, 290, Southern) recorded his 17th sack of the season in Week 18, breaking his own single-season AFL record of 16, originally set in 2012. Sykes now has three of the top five single-season sack performances in AFL history (1st, 17 in 2015; 2nd, 16 in 2012; and 5th, 14.5 in 2013). He now ranks third in AFL history with 52 career sacks.
J LEWIS SMALL PLAYMAKER OF THE WEEK / CUTTERS CATCH OF THE WEEK
Glasper (6-3, 265, North Carolina A&T) collected one tackle for loss, one fumble recovery, and an interception in the Rattlers’ 68-55 victory over the LA KISS in Week 18. His interception near the end of the second quarter of the game also earned Cutters Catch of the Week honors. The Arizona linebacker – who is enjoying the best statistical season of his career, having set a new single-season franchise record for sacks with 10.5 in 2015 – made a one-handed interception near the goal line to prevent LA from getting on the board late in the first half. He will receive a Cutters hat and t-shirt in recognition of the catch.
AFL HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK
Brooks (5-10, 185, Stephen F. Austin) tied the AFL record for kickoff return touchdowns in a season with his seventh of 2015 in the Thunder’s 40-42 loss to the Spokane Shock in Week 18. The special teams ace has set new single-season franchise records with 1,818 kickoff return yards and seven kickoff return touchdowns in 2015.

SaberCats Add Former Baylor Standout

July 30,2015

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Sabercats have been assigned rookie defensive lineman Chris McAllister, the team announced this week.
McAllister (6-2, 255, Baylor) joins the SaberCats for his first year in the Arena Football League. A standout at Baylor University, McAllister earned All-Big 12 First Team honors after registering 6.5 sacks in 2013. As a junior in 2012, McAllister totaled six sacks and was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player in the Holiday Bowl. His 15 career sacks are tied for the all-time school record at Baylor.
“Chris had an impressive collegiate career and having a player of his caliber will add depth to our defense,” said Owner and Head Coach Darren Arbet.
In 2014, McAllister signed with the Houston Texans of the National Football League as an undrafted free agent.

Rattlers Roll Past KISS, 68-55

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Arizona Rattlers (13-3) found their way back into the win column with a victory over the LA KISS (4-12) Sunday night at the US Airways Center by a score of 68-55 in front of 11,106 fans.
The Rattlers had their best defensive start of the season, as the squad did not allow the KISS offense to score until the third quarter. The Arizona defense was led by linebacker Tyre Glasper who picked off KISS quarterback Danny Southwick with a spectacular one-handed grab which was the AFL Highlight of the game. Glasper was also the Riddell Defensive Player of the Game.
On the Offensive side, the Rattlers had a fast start as well. It started with fullback Mykel Benson rushing 21 yards for a score. Benson ended the game with 48 yards on seven carries.
“We just wanted to get Benson going,” said head coach and general manager Kevin Guy. “He’s a huge weapon and a fit for us. We are very happy he is in our organization. He works hard and has a great attitude and obviously that transitions to the field.”
On LA’s first play on offense, defensive tackle Anttaj Hawthorne recovered the fumble by Southwick, which eventually led to a rushing touchdown by Rattlers quarterback Nick Davila. After a turnover on downs, Davila threw another touchdown, a 36-yard bomb, to wide receiver Rod Windsor. Windsor, who earned the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Game, finished with 155 yards and two touchdowns.
“We worked hard all week and there was a high tempo offense,” Guy said. “I thought they responded well and it transitioned to the game.”
The Rattlers led 34-0 with one second left in the second quarter, when Davila through an interception to KISS defensive back Josh Victorian, who ran it back 48 yards for a touchdown. This gave the KISS some momentum.
The KISS came out in the third quarter and immediately scored with a 39-yard pass from Southwick to KISS wide receiver Donovan Morgan. After a fumbled kick return by Arizona, Southwick scored again with a 1-yard pass to wide receiver Tyrone Goard.
The Rattlers were again able to wrestle back the momentum in the fourth quarter when Arizona wide receiver Chase Deadder, who is starting his first game back from injury, caught a short pass, and muscled his way 22 yards for a touchdown. Deadder’s catch was the Cutters Catch of the Game.

Shock Hold Off Thunder, 42-40

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Shock (6-10) defeated the Portland Thunder (4-12) by a final score of 42-40 in front of 8,357 fans Saturday night at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena in Week 18 Arena Football League regular season action.
Portland jumped out to a 13-point lead as Kyle Rowley connected with receivers Jared Perry and V’Keon Lacey for touchdown passes. Thunder defensive back Dwight McLean recorded an interception on Spokane’s opening possession, allowing Portland to hold the Shock scoreless in the first quarter of play.
Shock fullback Bryson Kelly bullied his way into the end zone from six-yards out to bring the game back within one score at 13-7 early in the second quarter. The two teams would go on to trade scores before the end of the half. Portland fullback John Martinez scored on a four-yard run before Spokane would fumble on their ensuing possession, setting the Thunder up with a short field on the Spokane seven-yard line. After the Shock defense dug in and held Portland to a turnover on downs in the red zone, Spokane found the end zone once more before the end of the half on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to Nick Truesdell, leaving Spokane trailing 14-20.
Spokane would go on to score 18 unanswered points in the third quarter, holding the Thunder to two consecutive turnovers on downs. All three third-quarter touchdowns by the Shock would come on the ground as quarterback Arvell Nelson recorded two touchdowns and Bryson Kelly added another. Spokane would take their first lead of the game at the 6:26 mark and close out the third quarter leading 32-20.
The final quarter of play opened with each team throwing interceptions in the red zone. After the Thunder regained possession, Rowley connected with Martinez for a nine-yard score before Spokane would respond with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to receiver Anthony Amos. On the ensuing kickoff, Portland receiver Duane Brooks recorded his seventh kick return of the season for a score. Shock kicker Taylor Rowan, who struggled on his PATs on the night, converted on a 20-yard field goal with just under one-minute to play in the contest to push the Shock lead to 42-34. Portland would find the end zone once more on the night as Rowley connected with Perry for a 25-yard touchdown with 29 seconds left on the clock. The Thunder would go for the two-point conversion and the tie, but after a false start penalty backed them up on their attempt they would fail to convert. After the onside kick attempt was recovered by the Shock, Spokane would go on to run out the clock and seal the 42-40 win.
Portland quarterback Kyle Rowley completed 24-of-38 pass attempts for 241 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. V’Keon Lacy led the Thunder receiving effort with seven receptions for 65 yards and one score while Jared Perry added six reception for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Defensive backs Dwight McLean and De’Mon Glanton each recorded interceptions. Defensive lineman Frank Trotter and Adrian Hamilton each recorded one sack.
Shock quarterback Arvell Nelson completed 20-of-31 pass attempts for 177 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, and two rushing scores on the night. Fullback Bryson Kelly added ten carries for 36 yards and two scores. The Shock receiving effort was led by Nick Truesdell who hauled in nine reception for 69 yards and one touchdown. Defensive back Mike McMillen recorded one interception.

Defence delivers; Esks top Riders to win fourth straight

EDMONTON -- Kenny Stafford started the scoring and Patrick Watkins added a pick-six, as an air-tight Edmonton Eskimos defence shut down the Riders on the way to a 30-5 win on Friday night.

» Preview: Riders eye first win in Edmonton
Matt Nichols found Stafford for a 27-yard touchdown on the game's opening drive to give Edmonton early momentum, then he turned the game over to his defence to close things out, clinching the Eskimos' fourth straight win.
Watkins finished with a sack and two interceptions on top of a team-high five tackles while Dexter McCoil and Otha Foster also had sacks, leading an Eskimo defence that's allowed only 20 points over the last three games and eight over the last two. JC Sherritt added his second interception of the season.
Nichols threw for 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 27-of-39 passing on a career night to move to 4-0 on the season.
While the Eskimos entered the game with the CFL's number one-ranked defence, it was the offence giving them a quick start. It started with three straight rushes to rookie runner Shakir Bell off the top followed by a completion on second and long to Wallace Miles. Then with the drive seemingly stalled just on the outside of field goal range, a fake punt resulted in a run for a first down by Jordan Lynch to keep the drive alive.
That play was a key one in the first half because without it, the Esks wouldn't have had the only touchdown of the opening two quarters. After a 14-yard completion to Bowman on second down, Nichols connected with Stafford on a slant and the first-year Eskimo hit the seam and found the end zone.
The 27-yard score, Stafford's third of the season, capped off a 76-yard drive on 11 plays to put Edmonton ahead 7-0 early.
Nichols kept up the pace on the Esks' second possession of the game, responding to Alex Hall's third sack of the game with a key second-down conversion on long-yardage. Terrell Maze tried to undercut the out to the sideline but missed, and there was Bowman making the grab and tip-toeing in bounds for a 23-yard completion.
The drive didn't culminate in a touchdown this time, but a 31-yard field goal by Grant Shaw gave the Eskimos a 10-point cushion in the opening quarter.
Looking to respond and get the Riders back in the game, Smith found himself overwhelmed early on in his first career start -- a tough task to begin with against an aggressive Eskimo defence. An 18-yard completion to Chris Getzlaf in the first was all the momentum Smith could muster early on, while in the second quarter a nine-play drive on which Smith went 4-for-5 ended only in a punt single.
A 21-yard run followed by a 20-yard catch by Jerome Messam set up the Riders' first field goal of the game, a 34-yard boot from Paul McCallum, while the defence shut down Nichols and the Esks through the second quarter to keep the score within six points at the half.
In the second half, however, the Riders began to unravel. Smith and the offence looked to push a little more while the Eskimos turned up the pressure, and the result was a pick-six by Watkins. Smith looked to find Ryan Smith but was picked off by the long-time CFL shutdown corner, and Watkins sprinted 47 yards untouched to break the game open for the Eskimos.
Up 20-5, Edmonton's defence wasn't done. Smith faced heavy pressure from Edmonton's front seven and forced a pass off his back foot into the hands of linebacker Sherritt, who returned the interception inside the Rider 10. The Rider defence tightened up and forced a field goal, but the Eskimos took a 23-5 lead into the final quarter.

Patrick Watkins had two interceptions to lead the Eskimos to their CFL-leading fourth win of 2015.

While the Eskimos showed no signs of any give on defence, the offence put the game away midway through the third. Bell sprinted the Eskimos into scoring range on a catch-and-run, then Nichols finished off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Kendial Lawrence on the fade pass to the left end zone sideline.
Nichols' second touchdown pass put him at exactly 300 yards on the night and more importantly put the Esks' lead at 30-5.
Watkins added another pick late while the Esks' defence continued to play shutdown ball, becoming the first team in the CFL to win four games in 2015.
Smith completed 15 of 22 passes for 132 yards in an efficient first career start, but he was picked off twice and failed to find the end zone as the Eskimos made it two straight games without a touchdown against. Running backs Messam and Anthony Allen, meanwhile, combined for only six carries for 27 yards as the Riders' rushing attack was grounded for the second straight game.
The Eskimos are back in action next Thursday with a visit to BC Place to take on Travis Lulay and the Lions, where they'll look to win their second road game of 2015. The Riders, meanwhile, will go back to the drawing board before visiting the Argos on Aug. 8 -- Toronto's home-opener -- where they'll seek their first win of the season.
