Orlando City SC midfielder Kevin Molino scored twice after the break
to send the New England Revolution to a 3-1 loss on Sunday at Camping
World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.
Molino's first goal unlocked a one-all match in the 64th minute while
the encore put the game out of reach for the guests in the 83rd minute.
New England got the early jump when Kei Kamara opened the scoring in
the 19th minute before Cyle Laren equalized in the 46th minute.
The Revolution loss put the brakes on the team's three-game unbeaten
streak, while Orlando City came out victorious in coach Jason Kreis'
debut match with the Lions.
What it means: With only a week to go before the close of the
summer transfer window, Sunday's loss eliminated any doubts about the
Revolution's need for defensive reinforcements. All three of Orlando's
goals were preventable, and yet, the locals simply didn't do enough to
thwart them on each occasion. The center back pairing of Jose Goncalves
and London Woodberry continues to have all the looks of a stop-gap
combination while Bobby Shuttleworth only showed why coach Jay Heaps
briefly gave backup Brad Knighton the starting spot earlier this summer.
Sunday's loss won't single-handedly alter the course of the
Revolution's season, to be sure, but it did serve as a stark reminder
that major improvements are needed for the sixth-place Revolution to
stay above the playoff line come October.
Stat of the match: Sunday marked the second time this month
the Revolution carried a lead into halftime on the road and lost. On
July 2 in Montreal, New England staked a 2-1 lead at the break before
conceding twice in the second half to drop a 3-2 loss.
Davies back in action: Less than 24 hours after it was
revealed that striker Charlie Davies was diagnosed with cancer a few
months ago, the former Boston College product -- who is now in remission
-- entered the match in the 75th minute as a substitute for Scott
Caldwell. Davies' last action came in an April 27 match vs. the Portland
Timbers.
Coach Kreis debuts as Lions boss against Revs: Longtime MLS
coach Jason Kreis was in the technical area for the first time as
Orlando City boss after taking the reins earlier this week. Kreis, who
went 1-2-0 against the Revolution last year at the helm of New York City
FC, won the MLS Cup in 2009 with Real Salt Lake.
Next up: The Revolution will attempt to reverse their fortunes
on Saturday when they face Toronto FC at BMO Field at 7:30 p.m. The
conference foes fought to a 1-1 draw at Gillette Stadium in their first
encounter of the season on April 9.
