EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- No one wanted overtime in the preseason finale, and Bill Belichick made sure neither the New York Giants or New England Patriots had to endure it.
Josh Brown kicked a 37-yard field goal with 38 seconds to play after Belichick went for a first down in his territory late, and the Giants capped their first undefeated preseason since 2006 with a 16-13 victory on Thursday night.
The Patriots coach went for it on fourth-and-1 from his 39 with less than three minutes to play and the score tied. Patriots rookie Jimmy Garoppolo threw his pass between two receivers and the Giants (5-0) ran off six plays to set up Brown's third field goal.
"I knew it was going to happen," Giants punter and holder Steve Weatherford said of Belichick's decision. "We would have done the same thing. We saw what we needed to see and it was time to get it over with. He (Belichick) was in the same position. Everyone was healthy for the most part. As much as you want to win, it's better to get out healthy."
The Patriots (2-2) started just two regulars and trotted on Tom Brady to hold on the first of Stephen Gostkowski's two field goals. Other than that, he stayed on the bench for the defending AFC East champions.
New England opens the season a week from Sunday at Miami.
There were many in New England who felt that Garoppolo was getting a chance to win the backup job from Ryan Mallett with this start. If he did, Belichick wasn't talking about it.
"I think it was a good experience for him," Belichick said. "It will help his development. He's obviously got a long way to go. He learned a lot from the week."
The Giants, who have missed the playoffs the past two seasons, play at Detroit in a Monday night game Sept. 8.
The final preseason game was left in the hands of backups for the most part. New England used regulars guard Josh Kline and safety Duron Harmon, while Giants starters played two series.
All the scoring came with reserves on the field and the Patriots were more impressive, with Garoppolo leading scoring drives of 82, 61 and 59 yards. He capped the first one with a 33-yard pass to Aaron Dobson early in the second quarter for a 7-3 lead. Gostkowski had field goals of 37 and 21, with the later giving New England a 13-10 lead late in the third quarter.
Brown, who beat out first-year kicker Brandon McManus earlier this week, tied the game in the fourth quarter with a 45-yarder. He had put New York ahead 3-0 following an interception by Zack Bowman in the second quarter. Peyton Hillis, who missed three weeks with an ankle injury, scored on a 1-yard run to put the Giants ahead 10-7 late in the half.
Bowman, who played with the Bears last season, felt it was important for the Giants to win in the preseason.
"It means a lot, it's the attitude we want to take on the field into the season," Bowman said. "You don't want to be 0-4 going into the season. But at the same time, it helps us a lot coming off last year (7-9). We want to keep this going. We want to keep this momentum going."
The Giants' new West Coast offense came into the fifth preseason game struggling, and it didn't show much in generating one first down against Patriots scrubs. Their final play summed up the preseason, despite the unbeaten record. On a third-and-2 from the Giants 28, Eli Manning hit tight end Kellen Davis for no gain.
A second-round pick out of Eastern Illinois, Garoppolo showed poise in his first start, completing 22 of 42 for 284 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
"It could have went better," Garoppolo said. "There are some things we messed up, fixable things."
Manning (1 of 4 for 0 yards), Ryan Nassib (6 of 14 for 107 yards) and Curtis Painter (3 of 5 for 32 yards) could not match those statistics combined.
"Our goal was to do some things, see what we needed to improve on and to get out healthy, and I think we did that," said Manning, who finished the preseason 20 of 41 for 188 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.

PITTSBURGH -- Cam Newton plans to have a very different view the next time he sees the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Carolina Panthers star, however, is OK if it ends with the same result he watched Thursday.Fozzy Whittaker ran for a 2-yard touchdown, Graham Gano added a short field goal and the Panthers beat the listless Steelers 10-0 in the preseason finale. The teams meet again in Charlotte on Sept. 24. By then, Newton's dinged-up ribs should be fine. Newton insists he'll be ready by the season opener in 10 days against Tampa Bay and could start throwing again this weekend."I feel pretty good now, and we have more than a week now until the opener," Newton said. "So, we'll see what happens as we get more into the week."Whittaker finished with 91 yards rushing for Carolina (2-2) and the defense did the rest as Carolina held the Steelers (1-3) to 185 total yards."He is showing toughness," coach Ron Rivera said of Whittaker. "He got bumped a little bit, but he stuck it out."Carolina backup quarterback Derek Anderson -- just hours removed from the birth of his first child with wife Mallory -- led a 14-play, 62-yard drive to open the game. The methodical march included a fourth-and-1 conversion in Pittsburgh territory, perhaps early proof Rivera plans to keep the swashbuckling approach that helped turn the Panthers around in 2013 and earned him NFL Coach of the Year honors.Anderson had some help in the only consequential drive by either side with players who will see regular playing time when the games start to count. Carolina rookie wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin hauled in a 19-yard pass to get the Panthers going. Benjamin finished with four catches for 56 yards and had little trouble getting open against Pittsburgh's aggressive secondary."We are confident with (Benjamin) and we know he needs to learn and grow, it's all part of the game," Rivera said. "I guess it's a little risky, but he has to learn. If he doesn't learn now, he's going to have to learn while we are running and we don't want that."The drive was the highlight of Anderson's night, at least on the field. He arrived in Pittsburgh overnight after his wife gave birth to their daughter Amelia. He completed 8 of 14 passes for 98 yards and left late in the second quarter when he injured his right hand trying to corral a snap that sailed over his head.Pittsburgh linebacker Jarvis Jones recovered, one of the few highlights for the Steelers on a night that did little to provide the momentum boost head coach Mike Tomlin was looking for heading into the season."We're very much still a team in development, like all teams are," Tomlin said. "I think you're kidding yourself if you think you're a finished product this time of year."Steelers third-string quarterback Landry Jones started, but did little to assure himself of a roster spot when the rosters are trimmed to 53 players. Jones completed 14 of 18 passes for just 97 yards and failed to lead the Steelers into scoring range while Roethlisberger watched from the sideline with a towel around his shoulders.Pittsburgh's first-string defense ended up working more than usual. Tomlin sent all the healthy names atop the depth chart onto the field to start the game, including defensive end Brett Keisel, who re-signed with Pittsburgh last week. Tomlin wanted to see if Keisel could "swim in the deep end of the pool."While Keisel looked spry for a player who turns 36 in a few weeks, the first unit allowed points for the fourth consecutive week.Steelers running backs Le'Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount -- a week removed from being cited on marijuana possession -- started the game on the bench but played sparingly in the first half. The team plans to discipline both players, but Tomlin stressed he would not reveal the punishment.Either way, Bell and Blount will be heavily involved this fall. The circumstances required for Landry Jones to see playing time the rest of 2014 are probably too farfetched to even ponder, but the former Oklahoma star didn't exactly produce a compelling argument for the Steelers to keep three quarterbacks on the active roster behind Roethlisberger and backup Bruce Gradkowski.Jones declined to speculate on whether he'll still have a job next week."I have no idea," he said. "This business, being cut, staying here, that's so far out of my control I don't even like thinking about it."---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL

CINCINNATI -- Andy Dalton practiced some drop kicks in shorts before the game, the most activity he got all night.
And he was in the majority when it came to spending time standing around.Running back Jeremy Hill didn't have it nearly so easy. The rookie ran for 70 yards and was Cincinnati's top receiver as well on Thursday night, leading the Bengals to a 35-7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in a game devoid of starters.Dalton and Colts quarterback Andrew Luck sat out, as did most of the starters for both teams. Dalton didn't even pull up his black socks, leaving them around his ankles on an 85-degree evening -- he knew there was no point.Hill, a second-round pick who backs up Giovani Bernard, carried 20 times and had a team-high six catches for 70 yards. He hurt his right elbow late in the first half but returned. The Bengals were thin at running back, so Hill knew he was going to play most of the game."I put myself in position for whatever role I might be needed in," Hill said.Coach Marvin Lewis hopes to use Bernard and Hill a lot in a revitalized running game."Jeremy got to understand what it's like to be an NFL running back," Lewis said. "We're not five deep. If he's going to be that guy, he's going to have to shoulder the load."Hill turned a short pass into a 41-yard gain, showing how he'll give the Bengals another receiving option out of the backfield."We came into tonight knowing that he was going to get the ball," said Jason Campbell, who was 13 of 16 for 123 yards. "We just wanted him to get into a rhythm and get the feel of what it's like. He runs hard. What I was proudest of was he was able to catch that screen pass and get some yardage."Cincinnati (2-2) pulled off three big plays in the second half against the backups of the Colts (0-4).Dane Sanzenbacher returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown. Safety Danieal Manning intercepted Chandler Harnish's pass and ran it back 33 yards for a score. Cobi Hamilton turned a short catch into a 50-yard TD.End Margus Hunt had three sacks, completing a preseason that saw him emerge as an important component in the Bengals' line rotation."He's just continued to strive and push hard and get better," Lewis said. "He should dominate in a game like this and he did."Harnish played the entire game and went 13 of 24 for 102 yards with five sacks. He threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Da'Rick Rogers, who kicked the ball in celebration and was penalized.Colts linebacker Robert Mathis didn't play, heading quietly into his four-game suspension. Mathis was suspended for breaking the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances and can't be with the team for the next month. He said he took a fertility drug to help his wife get pregnant.Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict sat out a day after he signed a three-year contract extension that will pay him a maximum $20.05 million through 2017. Burfict strained his right hamstring on Sunday during a preseason game in Arizona. The game drew 42,020 fans -- leaving more than 23,000 empty seats -- and was sloppy with so many backups on the field. On one play, Harnish overthrew receiver Donte Moncrief so badly that the ball flew behind the helmet of Rogers, who was getting ready to block on the play. The Colts had a fourth-and-2 at the Cincinnati 10-yard line and went for it, only to have Zurlon Tipton tackled in the backfield.

Game notes

Colts G Joe Reitz hurt his left ankle in the first quarter. X-rays were negative. The injury was diagnosed as a high ankle sprain. ... LB Andrew Jackson hurt his right ankle/foot in the closing minutes and had to be helped off. ... Bengals LB Sean Porter suffered a hamstring injury in the first quarter, Cincinnati's only setback. ... LB J.K. Schaffer (concussion) and CB Lavelle Westbrooks (thumb) cleared waivers and reverted to Cincinnati's injured reserve list.---Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL

Research Notes

From Elias: The Cowboys, Browns and Colts are the only winless teams this preseason. Dating back over the last 20 seasons, no winless preseason team has ever won a Super Bowl according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The only winless team to even make it to the Super Bowl were the 2000 Giants (who lost to the Ravens).

Associated Press
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Bills lost more than their preseason finale Thursday night, when rookie receiver Sammy Watkins did not return after aggravating a rib injury.
The Detroit Lions, on the other hand, have several big decisions to make before establishing their 53-player regular-season roster following a 23-0 win over the Bills. With time running out in the first half and perhaps their tenure in Detroit, third-string quarterback Kellen Moore and backup receiver Corey Fuller made one last case to show they deserve to make the final cut before Saturday.Moore found time in the pocket to hit Fuller on a perfectly placed 25-yard touchdown pass over the middle with 9 seconds left in the second quarter to put the Lions ahead 17-0."It was a great ball, just needled it right through and I just had to run underneath it," said Fuller of his second touchdown this preseason. "It was just another chance to be in the end zone to show the team here and to show other teams what I can do."Fuller, part of a multi-receiver competition for one of the team's final spots, finished with a team-best 43 yards receiving in helping the Lions finish the preseason at 3-1.Moore finished 17 of 28 for 172 yards and two touchdowns and is attempting to hang behind backup Dan Orlovsky. There are deeper concerns in Buffalo (1-4).The Bills produced another dud on offense during a three-drive cameo appearance. They also watched Watkins, their most dynamic threat, leave a game with bruised ribs for the second time in three weeks.Marrone declined to provide an update on the severity of the injury. And he defended his decision to play Watkins, who sat out a 27-14 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday after he hurt his ribs a week earlier at Pittsburgh."One of the big questions was the quarterback and Sammy. They haven't played a lot of games," Marrone said. "I always get concerned when people come out, especially when you're a rookie. You've got to play."Watkins, however, isn't just a normal rookie after the Bills invested heavily to land him in the draft. Buffalo traded its 2015 first-round pick to Cleveland to move up five spots and select the Clemson product with the fourth pick.Watkins was hurt on Buffalo's second possession, when he cut in from the right side on a slant pattern. Quarterback EJ Manuel never looked Watkins off and was a little late on the throw. Watkins reached out to knock down the ball, when he was hit by linebacker Ashlee Palmer."It was a tight throw, and he probably just got a little banged up," Manuel said. "He'll be fine."Manuel went 3 of 7 for 56 yards and was sacked twice.Jordan Palmer unraveled in his debut for Buffalo. He went 9 of 22 for 73 yards passing and three interceptions two days after being signed to compete for a backup spot.First-year Lions coach Jim Caldwell took few risks by resting most of his starters, including quarterback Matthew Stafford, receiver Calvin Johnson and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.And the Lions still won.Jeremy Ross scored on a 1-yard touchdown catch, and seventh-round pick Nate Freese hit all three field-goal attempts, including two 53-yarders.The Lions' defense continued its postseason string of first-half domination. Detroit gave up 97 yards net offense, had four sacks and safety Isa Abdul-Quddus' interception of Palmer's pass set up the first touchdown in the opening 30 minutes. The Lions finished the postseason allowing just six points in the first quarter and 22 in the first half."Any time you can keep a team in the National Football League off the scoreboard, it's a pretty good night for your defense," Caldwell said. "We still have some work to do, but overall, I thought it was a decent performance."

Game notes

The Bills' first-string offense finished the preseason combining for two touchdowns and three field goals on 23 possessions. ... Caldwell revealed that rookie LB Kyle Van Noy's status is uncertain after he had surgery this week to address what has been called an injury to his abdomen. ... Marrone revealed he rested several players due to injuries, including DBs Stephon Gilmore (groin) and Corey Graham (ankle) and TE Scott Chandler (knee).---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL
