EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Eskimos made a major statement while clinching second place in the West on Saturday night, with a 37-3 win over the BC Lions at Commonwealth Stadium.
Solomon Elimimian made history in the third quarter in breaking JC Sherritt's single-season tackles record, but was overshadowed by a dominant performance in all aspects by an Esks team that has now won three straight games and clinched a home date in the West Semi-Final on Nov. 16.

Mike Reilly had a big day with his arm and an even bigger one with his legs, throwing for 289 yards on 14-of-24 passing and rushing for 54 more, including a pair of touchdowns on the ground.
The Eskimos jumped out to a 20-3 first-half leads on touchdowns by Reilly and Pat White, and took over the rest of the game with a relentless rushing attack. John White rushed for a game-high 122 yards on 17 carries plus 80 receiving yards on four catches, while Kendial Lawrence was equally dangerous, catching three passes out of the backfield for 44 yards and adding 116 return yards.
The Saturday-night all-West matchup provided a potential playoff preview, as the Esks hold their second-place spot while the Lions look to hang onto third in the West, with the Riders close behind.
Elimimian led the Lions with seven tackles and an interception off Reilly, while Sherritt, the linebacker whose single-season record was broken, led all defensive players with eight total tackles, three sacks, and a forced fumble.
The Lions’ defence was heralded as the league’s best coming in, surrendering the lowest average points per game while coming off a 10-sack performance in last weekend’s win over the Bombers. But after the Eskimos forced a quick punt on their first defensive possession, the Green and Gold offence set out to attack.
An 18-yard run by Reilly followed by an unnecessary roughness penalty set up a 47-yard field goal by Hugh O’Neill, getting the Esks on the board with a 3-0 lead on their first possession of the game.
Another quick defensive stop put the ball back in the hands of Reilly, who got the next drive moving with a 36-yard completion to league-leading receiver Bowman on a scond-and-10 play. A 30-yard run by Pat White on the ensuing play kept the Lions’ defence off-balance, giving the Eskimos a first-and-goal inside the 10.
Reilly connected with Paris Jackson for a seven-yard completion on first down, before capping off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run to build on his team’s lead. The touchdown was Reilly’s seventh of the season, capping off a seven-play, 86-yard drive to give the Esks an early 10-0 lead.
The Eskimos got the ball right back, but gave the Lions excellent starting field position for the first time in the game when Reilly was picked off looking for running back Calvin McCarty, giving BC the ball at the Edmonton 36-yard-line.
2014 CFL Playoffs: Always better live!

With the win, the Edmonton Eskimos will play host to the West Semi-Final on Nov. 16 against either the BC Lions or the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Lock up your tickets today!

Kevin Glenn moved the chains once with his legs after an 11-yard scramble, but Edmonton’s defence continued its early-game success against a talented Lions offence, eventually forcing a 21-yard field goal by McCallum to make it 10-3.
Unfazed, the Eskimo offence answered two possessions later just as the second quarter got under way. After Reilly connected with John White for a 25-yard catch-and-run to kick-start the drive, before the veteran quarterback followed up an Adam Bighill sack with a completion to Lawrence to set up a third-down gamble and eventual first down.
Raising the bar

Solomon Elimimian added his name to the CFL record book on Saturday night, recording his sixth tackle of the game in the third quarter to break JC Sherritt's single-season tackles record of 130.

From the 10, the athletic Esks’ quarterback Pat White took the ball on his own again, beating the BC defence for the second touchdown run of the game for an Edmonton signal-caller, extending the Esks’ lead to 17-3 in front of the home fans during the second quarter.
O’Neill added his second field goal of the game from 44 yards to make it 20-3 before halftime, while the Esks squandered an opportunity to increase their lead even more after a fumble by John White deep in Lions’ territory.
After the clubs exchanged punts to start the third quarter, a 54-yard punt return from Lawrence helped the Eskimos pick up their offensive onslaught exactly where it left off in the second quarter. Reilly then went straight to Bowman for a 15-yard gain, before Reilly and John White rushed the Eskimos down to the goal line.
In the process, the Lions’ Elimimian recorded his sixth tackle of the game, giving him 131 on the season and moving him past JC Sherritt for all-time single-season tackles record. The accomplishment was quickly overshadowed, at least temporarily, as Reilly snuck for the one-yard touchdown to extend Edmonton’s lead to 27-3.
The Eskimos added one more touchdown, as Reilly's long completions to Fred Stamps and John White set up another goal-to-go situation, leading to Pat White's five-yard touchdown pass to Calvin McCarty to cap off the scoring.
Glenn was pulled in the fourth quarter after completing 9-of-17 passes for 68 yards, but John Beck didn't fare better in his place, completing just 1-of-7 passing attempts for 27 yards. Keola Antolin couldn't get anything going on the ground for the Lions, meanwhile, with just 34 yards on 10 carries.
The Lions get a chance to avenge this loss next weekend when they host the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday, Nov. 7, as they play for a chance to visit Edmonton in the West Semi-Final. The Eskimos, meanwhile, get a final dress rehearsal before the playoffs on Nov. 8 vs. Saskatchewan.
