Week:
Imagine being adrift on a vast ocean for a month ... well, land ho, Burnside is back at the helm of the S.S. Power Rankings. And that means a healthy dose of the Central Division at the top, although there might be no tougher place to play these days than the Atlantic Division. Read on.
2014-2015 Power Rankings: Week 17
RANK | TEAM / RECORD | TRENDING | COMMENTS
1 | 5 Last Week: 6 | The Predators are surviving quite well without Vezina/Hart Trophy front-runner Pekka Rinne. The Preds dispatched the Penguins 4-0 in a pre-Super Bowl matinee Sunday as they continue to own the top spot in the Central and the NHL's top winning percentage.
2 | 1 Last Week: 1 | The Blues rolled over the Capitals in the nation's capital Sunday to keep the Predators within range. The win was the fifth in a row for the Blues, who are now 10-0-1 in their past 11. Big home tilt Tuesday against the Atlantic Division-leading Lightning, although potential loss of All-Star Kevin Shattenkirk is more than a little troubling.
3 | 6 Last Week: 9 | How much fun is this race for the top spot in the Atlantic Division? The Wings have won 12 of 16 and are tied with the Canadiens, a point back of the Lightning.
4 | 3 Last Week: 7 | The Lightning have won two in a row after a brief soft spell and continue to own the top spot in both the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference. The Evgeni Nabokov experiment appears to be over as the veteran netminder was put on waivers on the weekend. What took so long?
5 | 3 Last Week: 2 | The division-leading Ducks had a disappointing weekend, losing to the Sharks and then at home to the Blackhawks after a nice six-game win streak. They still own a double-digit point lead over the second-place Sharks in the Pacific.
6 | 2 Last Week: 8 | The Habs were beaten 3-2 at home on Sunday against the lowly Coyotes, snapping a five-game winning streak. The loss kept the Canadiens from jumping past the Lightning and back into the top spot in the Atlantic, but that was still a good stretch for the Habs. Carey Price, who was rested Sunday, continues to garner Hart Trophy consideration.
7 | 4 Last Week: 11 | The Bruins are back, folks, with just two regulation losses in their past 17 games. Take heed, Atlantic Division. They've got an interesting week ahead, with the Rangers, Islanders and Canadiens.
8 | 4 Last Week: 4 | The Isles have dropped a pair in a row but continue to hold down the top spot in the Metropolitan Division. Life without Kyle Okposo won't get any easier, either.
9 | 6 Last Week: 3 | The Blackhawks are trending a little sideways, losing ground steadily to the Predators and Blues. Patrick Kane is now tied for second in league scoring, just two points behind Jakub Voracek.
10 | 5 Last Week: 5 | The Rangers stopped a brief two-game slide with a win over the Hurricanes but an interesting week with the Panthers, Bruins and Predators looms.
11 | 5 Last Week: 16 | The streaky Sharks are trending upward again, with three straight wins.
12 |
--
Last Week: 12 | Offense continues to be an issue for the Penguins, who look more than a little off-kilter. They were blanked by the Preds on Sunday and have been held to fewer than three goals in six of their past eight games.
13 |
--
Last Week: 13 | The Capitals are likewise a little sideways, and Sunday's loss to the Blues -- in which they gave up 40 shots and backup Justin Peters took another loss -- looked more like the old Caps than Barry Trotz's Caps. That's not good.
14 | 4 Last Week: 10 | Speaking of throwback, the Jets' three-game losing streak is looking very Thrasher-like. Winnipeg still has a good grip on the top wild-card spot in the Western Conference, but it's imperative this short slide does not become a cliff dive.
15 |
--
Last Week: 15 | The Flames are 6-2 in their past eight and enter February in a playoff spot. They've got a pretty big tilt against the Jets on Monday night.
16 | 1 Last Week: 17 | The Kings got off to a rocky start on a crucial road trip beginning in Boston and continue to be outside the playoff bubble.
17 | 1 Last Week: 18 | The Avs are without defensive leader Erik Johnson but have points in 11 of 14 and are back in the hunt in a crowded wild-card race in the West.
18 | 1 Last Week: 19 | The Stars are tied with the Avs, four points back of the Flames, and are likewise looking for stretch consistency.
19 | 5 Last Week: 14 | The Canucks are just barely holding down third place in the Pacific Division and have lost three of four. Their offensive depth has disappeared.
20 | 1 Last Week: 21 | OK, maybe Devan Dubnyk IS the answer. The former Oilers/Coyotes goalie has stabilized the Wild at a problematic position and they have won three in a row and pulled to within five of the playoffs.
21 | 4 Last Week: 25 | The Flyers are suddenly making noise in the Eastern Conference, with four straight wins. They're not close enough yet but closer than a week ago.
22 | 2 Last Week: 20 | The Panthers looked like the only team outside the top eight in the East at the All-Star break that had a shot. The Cats have one win in seven and face the Rangers, Islanders, Kings and Predators this week. Yikes.
23 | 4 Last Week: 27 | Good for the Devils, coming out of the break determined to make some noise. They are 4-1-2 in their past seven.
24 | 2 Last Week: 22 | The Senators are treading water, as they have pretty much all season.
25 | 1 Last Week: 24 | Signs of life for the young Hurricanes, as they have gone 5-2-2 in their past nine.
26 | 3 Last Week: 23 | Blue Jackets sans Sergei Bobrovsky are now re-entering the Connor McDavid zone.
27 | 1 Last Week: 28 | The Coyotes have been in Connor McDavid zone for some time now, notwithstanding a nice comeback win against the Canadiens on Sunday.
28 | 1 Last Week: 29 | The Oilers actually collected the odd win. Not like the wins are odd, just that it's odd to see them collected.
29 | 3 Last Week: 26 | What a disaster. Is there enough dynamite in Canada to actually successfully blow this thing up?
30 |
--
Last Week: 30 | The Sabres have not won since Dec. 27. You can't spell Buffalo these days without t-a-n-k.
