Barnstormers Outlast VooDoo, 50-41 Iowa overcomes a 13 point halftime deficit to earn a hard-fought road victory in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans VooDoo returned home after a month-long road swing, but they were unable to prevail as the Iowa Barnstormers took a 51-41 victory Saturday night at the Smoothie King Center in front of a crowd of 6,193 for Military Appreciation Night.
The Barnstormers took advantage of four VooDoo turnovers (all fumbles), and they also outscored New Orleans 37-14 in the second half. The VooDoo fall to 2-7 on the year, while Iowa improves to an even 5-5.
Iowa overcame a 27-14 first half deficit as quarterback J.J. Raterink threw a pair of touchdowns to receiver Julian Williams to knot the score at 27. The VooDoo were held scoreless in the third quarter. Iowa changed the complexion of the game after a sack-fumble deep in New Orleans territory to take over. Fullback Derik Steiner marched nine yards into the end zone to put the Barnstormers up 34-27. Steiner added a second touchdown in the fourth quarter and finished with 49 yards on the ground.
Quarterback Kurt Rocco threw four touchdowns and no interceptions, but fumbled three times. Rocco finished with 139 yards. Backup Ryan Perrilloux saw some action tonight and threw two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Quorey Payne was the VooDoo’s leading receiver with seven catches for 76 yards and a team-high four touchdowns. L.J. Castile grabbed six catches for 62 yards.

 

 

The VooDoo owned a 27-7 advantage at one point as New Orleans began the scoring as Rocco found Payne for a 25-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Rocco hurled two more touchdowns to Castile and another to Payne. Iowa closed out the first half as Raterink connected with Marco Thomas on a 19-yard strike. Raterink finished the night 19/36 for 266 yards and four touchdowns. Thomas and fellow receiver Darius Reynolds both finished with over 100 yards receiving.
