Rattlers Make History in 70-34 Win over Talons

June 15,2014

SAN ANTONIO – The Arizona Rattlers (13-0) defeated the San Antonio Talons (1-12), 70-34, at the Alamodome on Saturday night. The back-to-back defending ArenaBowl champions made history in the process, setting a new AFL record with 13 consecutive wins to start the season. The Rattlers also tied the AFL mark for most consecutive victories in a single season with their rout of San Antonio in Week 14.
For the second time in as many weeks, and for the fourth time in their past five games, the Rattlers scored an even 70 points. They did it with seven touchdown passes from quarterback Nick Davila, who completed 17-of-24 attempts for 232 yards before he turned over the reins to Jason Murrietta, whose first and only pass went for a touchdown to Rod Windsor, giving the team a 63-34 lead with 5:44 left.
On San Antonio’s ensuing possession, defensive back Marquis Floyd came up with his third interception of the night and returned it all the way to the Talons’ one-yard line, where fullback Alex Singleton took over and pushed his way into the end zone to provide the final score with 2:25 remaining.
It was the second rushing touchdown on the night for Singleton, with both coming in the fourth quarter. The rookie out of Tulsa,  who carried seven times for 19 yards, scored on a one-yard plunge that gave Arizona a 56-27 lead with 10 minutes remaining.

Windsor led all wide receivers with seven catches for 96 yards and three touchdowns while Maurice Purify, playing for the first time in a month because of injury, also came up with three scoring catches. Floyd’s performance was reminiscent of his three-interception night in Week 9 at Portland, when he also tied the single-game team record. With his three interceptions against the Talons, Floyd now has 51 for his career, moving the West Georgia grad past Arena Football Hall of Famer Durwood Roquemore (50) for the fourth-highest career total in League history.
San Antonio stayed close through the first half, trailing 20-21 with 10:45 left in the second. However, Matt Bassuener, making his first start at quarterback for the Talons this season, completed only one touchdown pass on 16-of-35 passing for 172 yards. Four of San Antonio’s touchdowns came on the ground – one by Bassuener and three by fullback Mykel Benson. PJ Berry accounted for the lone touchdown catch. The Rattlers’ defense also forced the Talons to turn over the ball on downs three times.
