EDMONTON -- Bo Levi Mitchell threw two touchdown passes and rushed for two more, as the Calgary Stampeders handled the Edmonton Eskimos 41-34 on Saturday night in the Labour Day rematch at Commonwealth Stadium.
Earning a three-game sweep in the season series, it was a bold statement by a Stampeders team showing no signs of slowing down. With the win the Stamps swept the home-and-home Labour Day series, extending their lead in the West Division to two games while also securing any tie-breaker that might come into play with their Alberta rival.
Mitchell threw for 216 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 14-24 passing, and was equally dangerous on the ground with 23 rushing yards and two more scores on three attempts. McDaniel had a team-high 124 yards to go with a touchdown on four catches, while Jon Cornish chipped in with his second straight 100-yard rushing game with 109 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.
The Stampeders held a three-touchdown lead with just over four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, until the Eskimos mounted a furious comeback bid after back-to-back touchdowns from Adarius Bowman and Matt Nichols. But Mitchell's deep completion to McDaniel and then a subsequent rushing touchdown from Cornish put the game away, despite three fourth-quarter touchdowns by Edmonton's offence.
The win marked Calgary's 11th straight over its provincial rival, while Mitchell moved to 12-1 in his career as a starting quarterback.
Edmonton’s defence held on the short field, eventually forcing a Rene Paredes field goal to limit the damage and give the Stampeders a 3-0 lead. The defences continued to control the pace of the game for the rest of the first quarter, as the score remained that way until the second.
At that time, Nichols hooked up with A.J. Guyton for a 26-yard gain up to midfield. Then after a holding penalty put the offence in first-and-long, Nichols found Bowman for a 30-yard pickup deep into Calgary territory.
The Esks stayed with the hot hand in Nichols, who on the very next play hit Guyton for a short completion. The 25-year-old did the rest himself, making defenders miss before sprinting through a seam and across the goal line to give Edmonton its first lead of the game, 7-3.
The action continued to pick up after that, as Mitchell and the Stampeder offence’s response was prompt. Mitchell completed a pass to Sederrik Cunningham, before rushing for a first down with his legs to get the drive started.
Some hard running by Cornish followed by a face
mask penalty put the Red and White within striking distance, then on the
very next play Mitchell found an open Simon Charbonneau-Campeau
streaking down the seam for a 30-yard touchdown pass.
Calgary’s defence made a quick stop, putting the ball right back in the hands of a Stampeders offence showing signs of heating up. The drive got started with two solid runs by Cornish, moving the offence into Edmonton territory to the 39.
On the next play Mitchell found McDaniel, and the Stamps’ leading receiver outran defender and almost scored, coming up just shy of the goal line. The Stampeder quarterback finished off the drive on his own from there though, plunging through the line to add to Calgary’s lead, 17-7.
Hugh O’Neill booted his first field goal of the game for the Esks to cut the deficit to 17-10 at halftime, but the Stampeders seized momentum early in the third when Nicholls was hit from his blindside by Shawn Lemon, forcing him to cough up the ball.
There to recover was national lineman Corey Mace, who brought it to the 10 to set the Stamps up for an early third-quarter score. Mitchell dropped back and found McDaniel for the receiver’s fourth touchdown of the season, extending the Stamps’ lead to 24-10 and now giving them 10 points off turnovers.
Regardless of field position, the Stampeders had the Eskimos’ number on this evening in Edmonton. Starting from the 20 they went back to work, getting first downs on short completions to Jock Sanderson, Anthony Parker, and Nik Lewis. A 32-yard completion to McDaniel moved the Esks to within striking distance.
Then on the very next play, Mitchell showed flashes of Jeff Garcia with his running ability, as he found a seam then juked out defenders and broke tackles on the way to a 20-yard touchdown run. The highlight-reel play capped off a seven-play scoring drive from the Stamps’ own 20, and extended Calgary’s lead to 31-10 in the third quarter.
The Eskimos continued to move the ball throughout the night, and after the team exchanged field goals finally started finishing drives in the fourth. Bowman got things started with a touchdown reception, and with under five minutes remaining the the Eskimos went on defence looking to get the ball back quickly.
A quick sack of Mitchell then a second down incompletion did just that, and after getting the ball near midfield Nichols quickly went back to work. The strong-armed quarterback went for it all right away, finding Fred Stamps for a big completion down to the one. That led to a short one-yard touchdown, cutting Edmonton's deficit to just a single touchdown with over two minutes remaining.
But just as things started to get tense at Commonwealth Stadium, Mitchell on first down fooled the Edmonton defence with a pump fake before finding McDaniel deep downfield for a big gain. Already in field position, Cornish finished things off there, punishing defenders with a powerful first down run before finishing things off with his first touchdown of the evening.
Nate Coehoorn added a late touchdown for the Eskimos with under a minute left, but it was too little too late for the Green and Gold after they failed to recover an onside kick.
Nichols, despite the loss, enjoyed a career night for the Eskimos, throwing for 333 yards and three touchdowns on 25-43 passing. Adarius Bowman tied a game-high with 124 yards and a touchdown on eight cathes, while A.J. Guyton had 111 yards and a touchdown on six grabs. Stamps, in his first game back from injury, had a solid 73 yards on four catches.
The win pushed Calgary to 9-1 on the season, and the Stamps will look to add to a run of five straight wins next Saturday at home against the Argos. The Eskimos will look to get back on track at home on Friday Night Football against the Alouettes.

Cornish dominates, part II |

The Eskimos are probably thankful they've seen the last of Jon Cornish, at least for the regular season, after he overpowered the Edmonton defence for the second straight week. » More on Cornish |
