EDMONTON – The Edmonton Eskimos defence swarmed the Riders early and often as Eskimos cruised to a 24-0 at Commonwealth Stadium.
Defence was the difference in the game as the Eskimos limited the Riders to only 204 yards, forced two turnovers and notched six sacks in the game. This also marked the first time since 1986 that the Roughriders were shutout in a game.
On offence, Edmonton showed off their rushing attack via John White who finished the contest with 192 yards while Mike Reilly added 106 yards on the ground.
Heading into the Week 14 matchup, the teams entered with different tastes in their mouth. Saskatchewan come off a thrilling overtime victory at home against the Ottawa REDBLACKS and the Edmonton Eskimos played guests in Hamilton, where the Ticats stormed back and stayed undefeated at their new home, 25-23.
The opening kickoff went to the Eskimos, but both teams’ first possessions of the game resulted in zero points.
To begin their second drive, Reilly found the league’s leading receiver Adarius Bowman for a 9-yard pass. After using his arm, Reilly added a 12-yard run to give the home side a new set of downs. Two plays later, John White finished the possession by scoring a highlight reel 36-yard touchdown to give the Eskimos the early 7-0 lead.
Following the next possession for the Eskimos, a pair of receptions from Bowman and a pair of runs by Reilly had the team driving into Riders territory. Reilly took a shot into the end zone to Fred Stamps, which looked like he caught it in tight coverage with Tristan Jackson, but when Stamps hit the ground the ball jumped out.
Hugh O’Neill kicked a 27-yard field goal to give the Eskimos 10-0 lead.
In the Rider’s first possession in the second quarter, they were pinned back deep on their own 5-yard line. After an Anthony Allen run on first down that went for a minor gain, Sunseri tried finding Chaz Schilens deep, but over threw his receiver.
After the quick two-and-out, Chris Milo placed half way into his own end zone took a knee to give the Eskimos the safety.
Once again, the Eskimos found success and were able to move the ball down field and settled for a Hugh O’Neill field goal attempt from 44 yards out, but was partially blocked and resulted in a single to extend the Eskimos first half lead to 13.
Tino Sunseri making his third-career start at quarterback was having a hard time solving the Chris Jones’ defence. The Riders didn’t register their first-first down until the 9:39 mark of the second quarter, via an Anthony Allen 18-yard scamper.
The following play after the Allen run, Sunseri threw a high ball to his receiver, which he tipped into the hand of Ryan Hinds for the turnover.
The Riders defence was able to hold the Eskimos off the board after the interception.
Looking to shift the momentum, the Chris Milo look to pin the Eskimos deep in their own end, and that he did after punting the ball, where it finally settled on the Eskimos four-yard line.
With a defensive stop, the Riders were looking at the possibility of getting great field position, but it wasn’t in the cards.
On the first play with the Eskimos deep in their own end, John White ripped off a 60-yard run to get the home side out of their own end and back in Riders territory.
Following the run, the Eskimos were unable to orchestrate anything else resulting in a punt, where it skipped into the end zone and out of bounds resulting in a rouge.
The Edmonton Eskimos defence deserved most of the credit to their team’s 14-0 lead heading into the locker room. The defense smothered the Roughriders’ offence, only allowing 84 total yards in the opening half compared to the 230 yards accumulated by the Eskimos.

on display as they rushed for 179 yards; led by John White who recorded
101 yards and Reilly with 77.
Saskatchewan opened the second half with the ball and the adjustments made in the locker room didn’t change the end result in the first possession. On second down, the Eskimos swarmed Sunseri which resulted in a Cameron Sheffield sack to end their drive.
On the ensuing drive for the Eskimos, after a first down and a penalty, the drive stalled and once again O’Neill was called on and he booted his season-long 45-yard field goal to extend the lead to 17.
After the first two drives didn’t amount to much, Corey Chamblin decided to make a switch at quarterback. Replacing Sunseri was the first-year CFL player from Texas Tech, Seth Doege.
In Doege’s first series in the CFL, he wasn’t able to make a dent in the Eskimos defence, as the team went two-and-out. On the following possession he did make his first completion as a pro to Rob Bagg, but once again wasn’t able to move the chains.
As the third quarter ended, the Eskimos defence continued to play at a high level, but the offence was unable to pull away from the Riders as they headed into the fourth quarter with the 17-0 advantage.
The Riders were in need of some fasat points, Doege was looked upon to throw the ball.
After connecting with Chris Getzlaf and Weston Dressler for a pair of first downs, the Riders looked primed to put some points on the board and begin their comeback, but once again, the Eskimos defence stood tall and forced a punt.
With under four minutes to go in the fourth, Doege found Dressler again for a first down. He followed that play with another pass to Dressler, but this time it was picked off by Aaron Grymes for his third interception on the season.
Late in the fourth, John White added to his great night with a 10-yard catch for a touchdown.
The teams will get to know each other pretty well towards the end of the 2014 season. In the final five weeks the team’s face-off against each two more times in the next six weeks.
Heading into Week 15, the Roughriders will play host to the West leading Calgary Stampeders, while the Eskimos travel east to take on the Toronto Argonauts.
