CALGARY – Jon Cornish took a week off to heal and came back determined to power his team to a win.

The stud tailback 156 yards on the ground and Rene Paredes added four field goals as the Calgary Stampeders gutted out a 14-7 win over the BC Lions Saturday night.

BC quarterback Kevin Glenn had trouble getting big plays when he needed them last week in a loss to Toronto but wasted little time getting the Lions on the board in this one.

On the Lions opening possession, Glenn led a 9-play, 76-yard drive with completions to Bryan Burnham, Ian Logan, Shawn Gore and Andrew Harris to set up a 2-yard touchdown plunge by backup QB John Beck.

» Preview: Lions, Stamps clash at McMahon
Up 7-0 early, the Lions defence – led by LB Solomon Elimimian – held the Stampeders off the board for the remainder of the first quarter.  Elimimian leads the league in tackles by a land-slide but had a rough outing last Friday.

He and the Lions were taking on a Drew Tate offence as the Stampeders backup was starting his second consecutive game with Bo Levi Mitchell on the sidelines.  Tate had a day to forget last Saturday in a loss to the Montreal Alouettes and was looking to bounce back in front of the home gathering at McMahon.

With the Stampeders offence trying to find a rhythm in the second quarter, they inserted backup QB Bryant Moniz in as a change of pace for a play but it was Elimimian that came up with the next big play.  Moniz faked the end around to slotback Maurice Price and darted up field for 9 yards but fumbled the football.  Elimimian recovered, setting the Lions up at the Stamps’ 46 yard line.

Calgary escaped the turnover unscathed and looked to put their first points on the board two possessions later.  Scrimmaging from their own 22 yard line, Tate spotted a breakdown in the Lions secondary and delivered a strike to Price who raced down the near sideline for a 71-yard catch-and-run.

Rene Paredes added a 24-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.  A missed field goal on the next Calgary series from 51-yards out kept the Leos in front by four with 2:57 on the clock.

The Lions went two-and-out on their next possession and punted the ball away but drew a Contacting the Kicker call and retained possession.  A 23-yard run by Harris put the Leos into Calgary territory but the Stamps defensive line kept Glenn contained and preserved the four-point deficit.

As the teams broke for halftime, there was no doubt where the focus was for both teams – Jon Cornish.   The reigning CFL MOP touched the ball 14 times in the first half and registered 62 combined yards but was held in check for the most part.

Despite working with a target on his back, Cornish was on a mission on the first series in the second half, ripping off a 40-yard gain to set up a Paredes field goal.  Another miss by the often consistent Calgary kicker kept the score at a standstill.  Logan fielded the missed field goal and brought it out to his own 10 yard line but a quick two-and-out forced the Leos to concede a safety to cut the lead to 7-5.

Despite coming away with nothing on their previous drive, Cornish’s run seemed to spark the Stamps.  On their next series, Tate found Nik Lewis and Joe West for first downs to set up a 36-yard Paredes field goal.  This time, the Stampeders kicker made no mistake and gave Calgary their first lead of the game 8-7.

A quick defensive stop and a pair of Cornish first down runs later and the Stampeders put another three points on the boar with a 43-yard Paredes boot.

With Calgary in front 11-7, the Lions were forced to continue on without their starting quarterback.  With 14:18 left in the game, Glenn was seen on the sidelines with an ice bag on his left arm.  Beck took over the Lions offence but went two-and-out on his first series.

Sensing that the Lions could be had with their starter on the bench, Cornish put his game into high gear.  He took a handoff from Tate, got into the second level of defenders and romped 43-yards to go up over 100 yards on the day.

Two plays later, Paredes added another field goal, from 30 yards out, to increase the lead to a touchdown 14-7.

With 5:06 left, the Lions got Glenn back but lost Harris with what looked like a left ankle injury.  He was carried off the field and headed directly to the locker room.

The Lions had one last shot to tie the game up with 1:42 left.  Glenn found Gore for a gain of 14 yards but the game was sealed a play later when he floated a pass to Emmanuel Arceneaux on a post and had his pass picked off by Stamps DB Keon Raymond.

Next up the Stampeders is the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina while the Lions make their first and only visit to the new Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton.
