MONTREAL -- The Montreal Alouettes stymied a potential second straight comeback by the Calgary Stampeders, grabbing a 31-15 lead Sunday afternoon.
Calgary entered Week 13 coming off an improbable comeback, down 29-3 with a minute left in the second quarter last week against Toronto, the Stampeders battled all the way back to secure a 40-33 win. It was the second-biggest comeback in franchise history but didn’t come without a price as starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell was lost to injury.
After helping closeout the ‘Cowtown Comeback’,
Drew Tate made the start for the Stampeders but despite getting quality
first down production, couldn’t sustain drives in the first quarter.
His counterpart, Montreal’s Jonathan Crompton, helped get the first
points on the board.
As the first quarter came to a close, Crompton found receiver SJ Green for a 26-yard gain, before throwing a strike to Duron Carter for 22 yards to set the Als up inside the Calgary five yard line. On the second play of the second quarter, the Als finished the drive when backup QB Tanner Marsh plunged forward in short yardage for the 1-yard major.
Crompton finished 20 of 28 for 220 yards and a pair of touchdown tosses. Tate, meanwhile, went 15 of 30 for 152 yards and an interception.
After the team’s traded single points, the Als were up 8-1 and looking to extend their lead heading into halftime.
In a rather unorthodox move, the Alouettes began platooning their two quarterbacks, with Marsh and Crompton coming on and off the field for certain play sets. Together, they put together a 7-play, 75-yard scoring march, completed with a hard pass from Crompton to receiver James Rodgers on a slant, where the pint-sized receiver broke a tackle and charged 17 yards to the end zone to increase the lead to 15-1.
With the clock winding down in the first half, Tate and the Stampeders offence finally got some traction before heading to the locker room.
On first down, Tate escaped the pocket and scampered for 15 yards before finding Brad Sinopoli and Maurice Price each for 10 yards. A pair of plays later and scrimmaging from the 1-yard line, Tate faked a handoff to RB Matt Walters and shifted left before running into the endzone to cut the lead to 15-8.
Despite the 67-yard scoring drive, Calgary was
relying on Walter and veteran RB Hugh Charles to take on the ground
attack with superstar tailback Jon Cornish sidelined with what the team
listed as ‘nagging injuries’.
Last week versus Toronto and down by 19 points, the Stamps scored a touchdown late in the first half which eventually spearheaded a furious second half. This week, Tate looked to do the same, following up his late second-half score with a major to start the third quarter.
Tate led a 5-play, 56-yard touchdown drive on Calgary’s first possession of the half. Highlighted by a 38-yard pass to Price on a corner route, Tate capped off the drive with his second touchdown of the game, from 6 yards out, to tie the game at 15.
The rest of the third quarter went by without incident until the Als re-acquired the lead with a minute left. Again, the platooning quarterback duel of Crompton and Marsh helped put the Als in scoring range but an impressive drive stalled on the Calgary 11 yard line, forcing Sean Whyte to hit the game’s first field goal from 18 yards out.
The fourth quarter began with the Alouettes holding an 18-15 lead that they would quickly build on.
After a solid punt return from Rodgers set Montreal up at the Calgary 49-yard line, Crompton scrambled and dumped a pass off to RB Brandon Whitaker for 19 yards before hitting Carter on a slant pattern for a 10-yard touchdown. The major gave Montreal a 25-15 lead with just over 11 minutes left in the contest.
With Tate looking to answer on the ensuing drive, his misguided pass on second down sailed into the arms of Als DB Geoff Tisdale who game Montreal possession immediately inside Stampeders territory.
Crompton then found Brandon London to help set up a 34-yard Whyte field goal to put the Als in front by 13 with just under 8 minutes remaining.
All hopes of Calgary staging another comeback were dashed when Walter fumbled in his own territory and Montreal recovered. Whyte promptly added a 27-yard field goal to extend the lead to 31-15.
The Als now turn their focus to the Ottawa REDBLACKS who play host next week while the Stamps travel to BC to take on the Lions.
Hall of Famers Recognized
In addition to the Stamps and Als game, Montreal played host to the annual Hall of Fame weekend. Inducted this year were Alouettes legends Ben Cahoon, Uzooma Okeke and Wally Buono, along with Moe Racine and Charles Roberts. Larry Haylor and Neil Lumsden were also inducted in the Amateur category.
