EDMONTON -- Mike Reilly's return to the field was a triumphant one, as he and Adarius Bowman led the Edmonton Eskimos to a 33-16 win over the Montreal Alouettes on Friday night at Commonwealth Stadium.
After a defensive struggle through three quarters, Reilly got the best of Jonathan Crompton and the Als' offence in a fourth-quarter shootout that led the Eskimos to 21 unanswered points and a much-needed return to the win column.
Reilly tied a season-high in passing yards with 271 yards on 22-32 passing, while adding two rushing touchdowns to move to 7-1 as a starter this season. Bowman meanwhile had his third straight game over 100 yards, catching 10 passes for 131 yards, in a game that was much closer than the score indicates.
Duron Carter caught a 54-yard touchdown pass for the Alouettes, and he led the team with 64 yards on three catches. Crompton meanwhile took what Edmonton's elite defence gave him, completing 15 of 27 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown. He falls to 2-1 as a starter after his first career loss
The win for Edmonton snapped a two-game losing streak after the Esks were swept in a Labour Day home-and-home against Calgary, while Montreal's two-game winning streak came to an end.
Neither offence could get the ball moving early on against stellar defences, as Crompton missed each of his first five passes of the game. A big punt by Hugh O’Neill and then a defensive two-and-out led to two points off a safety for the Esks, who then added a field goal by O’Neill to close out the first quarter.
Finally in the second quarter Crompton completed his first pass, before on a second-and-long play he hooked up with S.J. Green for 15 yards to set up a Sean Whyte field goal, cutting Montreal’s deficit to 5-3.
The ensuing drive for the Eskimos was a
promising one, as some hard inside running and a second down completion
to Bowman set up a 36-yard field goal attempt by O’Neill – but this
time, the replacement for the injured Grant Shaw pushed the kick wide
right, leaving Edmonton with only a single point.
With a quick two-and-out from the defence, the Eskimos’ special teams put them right back in scoring range as Kendial Lawrence burned coverage for a 51-yard return. But that stingy Montreal defence followed it up with another big play, when John Bowman forced Tyler Thomas to fumble and Marc Olivier Brouillette recovered to give Montreal possession.
The teams exchanged punts, but the fumble gave Montreal an edge in field position which ultimately led to a Whyte field goal to knot things up at six apiece heading into halftime.
The Eskimos, a team that’s struggled to produce offence in the third quarter so far this season, exploded out of the gates in this third quarter when Reilly dropped back on second and short and found Fred Stamps behind coverage for the deep 54-yard completion.
Reilly went back to Stamps on a second down play near the end zone, but the Alouettes converged quickly in the back of the end zone and forced the incompletion as Geoff Tisdale broke up the pass. That forced a third field goal of the night from O’Neill, giving Edmonton a 9-6 lead.
Whyte and O’Neill exchanged field goals in the third as the defences continued to control the pace of the game. But in the fourth that changed with a single play, when on first down Crompton went deep and found Carter wide open behind coverage for a 64-yard touchdown pass.
The home run marked Carter’s second touchdown of the season and in as many weeks, giving the Alouettes their first lead of the night.
Edmonton’s response wasn’t quite as quick, but
no less impressive. Reilly started with a 48-yard pass to Bowman to the
Montreal 23, while a horse-collar added on moved the Eskimos to the 14.
After an incomplete pass, Reilly went right back to Bowman and the
league’s leading receiver made a diving sideline grab just shy of the
goal line.
Down four points, it was a no-brainer for the Eskimos to gamble on third down from the one, and Reilly finished the drive off with the quarterback keeper to restore Edmonton’s lead, 19-16.
A quick stop on defence gave the Eskimos the ball back, and Reilly continued to have the hot hand. Completions to Nate Coehoorn put the Esks in the red zone, then on a second-and-long play the Green and White went with the element of surprise. On a draw play, Thomas burst through a gaping hole for a 20-yard touchdown run, extending Edmonton's lead to 10 points.
Montreal failed to respond after that, while the Eskimos had one more scoring drive in them that featured a number of first down runs and culminated in Reilly's second rushing touchdown of the evening, giving Edmonton a 33-16 lead with just over a minute left.
Whyte was perfect on three field goal attempts for the Alouettes, while O'Neill converted on three of four attempts in his second game replacing Shaw.
The Eskimos continue a short swing against the East Division next Saturday with a visit to Hamilton, while the Alouettes host the Stampeders on Saturday night looking to start a new winning streak.
