HAMILTON -- Zach Collaros was solid, completing 29 of his 36 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns, while newcomer Terrell Sinkfield returned a punt 57 yards to the house, as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats downed the visiting Roughriders 28-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The loss was Saskatchewan's first since a Week 3 26-13 defeat to the BC Lions.
The Ticats were also pushed offensively by receiver Andy Fantuz, who reeled in 11 catches for 108 yards, as well as tailback Mossis Madu, who registered 91 total yards on 12 touches.
Heading into Sunday’s game, the Roughriders topped the league in rushing, averaging 150.7 rushing yards per game, thanks in large part to their trio featuring Jerome Messam, Anthony Allen and Will Ford.
However, the three-headed monster was reduced to
two in Week 12, as Ford was announced as a healthy scratch prior to
kickoff. Messam and Allen combined for 104 yards on the afternoon.
But the biggest story all week concerning the Riders offence was the injury to Darian Durant, who is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season after sustaining an elbow injury during last Sunday’s Banjo Bowl.
As a result, Tino Sunseri was handed the keys to the Riders attack. The University of Pittsburgh product finished the game with nine completions on 21 attempts for 88 yards.
After the Ticats took an early 6-0 lead thanks to consecutive field goals of 50 and 51 yards from veteran kicker Justin Medlock, Sunseri took to the field for his second possession, looking to get the Riders into an early rhythm.
However, Suneri ran into some trouble instead, as his pass intended for Weston Dressler was picked off by Courtney Stephen.
Fortunately for Sunseri, the Ticats weren’t able to capitalize off the turnover.
Sunseri was good on two of his first four passes for 22 yards in the opening 15 minutes.
As Sunseri was busy trying to find his footing, Collaros and the Ticats offence were having no such problems.
Already with nine completions on 10 attempts under his belt, the Ticats pivot hooked up with receiver Luke Tasker, who battled his way through coverage for a touchdown to extend Hamilton’s first half lead to 13.
The Ticats ran into some injury trouble midway through the second quarter, as tailback Mossis Madu was forced out of the game with an apparent lower back injury. He would eventually return, however.
Meanwhile, Sunseri and the Riders offence finally looked as though they were starting to generate some pace.
Scrimmaging from their own 51 yard line, Sunseri
guided his unit on a nine-play, 46-yard drive that was capped off by a
10-yard field goal courtesy of Chris Milo.
The Ticats had a chance to extend their lead with time winding down in the first half, but some poor time-management by the offence saw them fail to get out of bounds quick enough, leaving Medlock and the field goal unit on the sidelines.
Hamilton took a 13-3 lead into the break.
After a quiet start to the third quarter by both offences, the Ticats' special teams unit took it upon themselves to energize the home-town crowd.
Following another two-and-out by Sunseri and the Riders offence, Milo offered up a 36-yard punt that was returned 57 yards to the house by Sinkfield, giving the Tabbies a 20-3 lead.
Sunday marked Sinkfield's first game as a Tiger-Cat. He was released by the Argos on Aug. 26.
With just over three-and-a-half minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the Ticats put the game on ice, as Collaros hooked up with Tasker again for a 14-yard touchdown.
The endzone strike was Tasker's second of the game, coming from the exact same distance as his first major of the outing.
A punt single with 1:30 by the Ticats increased their lead to 25.
Next week, the Ticats will stay at home to play host to the visiting Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday night, while the Riders will return to Mosaic Stadium where they'll face off against Henry Burris and the REDBLACKS on Sunday.
