WINNIPEG -- Ernest Jackson tallied 149 yards receiving and the go-ahead touchdown as the BC Lions clinched a playoff spot with a 28-17 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The Bombers were eliminated from the playoffs with the loss.
Jackson did most of his damage in the first half -- despite scoring the major late -- where he posted 115 yards.
John Beck threw two touchdowns in a relief effort after BC starter Kevin Glenn was injured midway through the fourth quarter and didn't return.
Winnipeg entered the game in a must-win situation to keep their playoff hopes alive while the Lions needed a win to keep things interesting in both divisions with the Crossover rule still in play.
With Drew Willy back at the helm after missing a
week due to injury, the Bombers got on the board first when Lirim
Hajrullahu hit a 45-yard field off a strong return by Troy Stoudermire
who was also returning to the lineup.
A few series’ later, Willy spotted Clarence Denmark who turned a catch into a 37-yard gain. In doing so, Denmark became only the second player in the CFL to go up over 1,000 yards receiving. Edmonton’s Adarius Bowman currently leads the league.
Denmark’s reception set up a 30-yarder for Hajrullahu but he missed wide and was only able to gain a single point.
Down 4-0, the Lions went to work and leaned on what has become their new go-to receiver and young tailback. Quarterback Kevin Glenn connected with Ernest Jackson for a 48-yard reception and then handed the ball off twice to Keola Antolin for gains of 17 and 10 – the latter, a touchdown romp to give the Leos a 7-4 first quarter lead.
On the convert, kicker Paul McCallum went over 3,000 points for his illustrious career.
Jackson is coming off a career game against the Ottawa REDBLACKS where he tallied 195 yards and a touchdown on 8 receptions.
Hajrullahu added another field goal to pull even at 7 as the second quarter got underway as running back Paris Cotton ripped off a run of 39 yards to set up the chip shot.
Cotton continued to rack up yards on the ensuing possession as he had two big carries before Willy stepped into a pass headed for Denmark. It was right on the money as Denmark ran the corner route and hauled in the 19-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-point lead.
With almost all of the momentum on the side of the Blue Bombers, the Lions quickly made their mark before halftime.
Antolin helped the Lions get back into Bombers territory to set up a 22-yard McCallum field goal. On the ensuing drive, Cotton fumbled the ball with 42 seconds left to give the Leos the ball right back.
Glenn promptly found Jackson for a 42-yard reception and McCallum cut the lead to one on the final play of the half with a 15-yard field goal.
Jackson was dominant in the first half, making 5 receptions for 115 yards.
The Bombers posted the first points of the second half when Cotton gained two more first downs to give Hajrullahu a shot at a 46-yard field goal which he made good on to increase the lead to 17-13.
As the quarter came to a close, Glenn and the Lions advanced the ball to midfield before Johnny Sears Jr. stepped in front of a pass intended for Emmanuel Arceneaux and pitched it back to Maurice Leggett who took it 79 yards for what would have been a touchdown. Sears Jr. was ruled down by contact on the pitch however and the Bombers took over and scrimmaged at their own 47 yard line as they entered the fourth quarter with a four-point lead.
Willy and the Bombers would give it right back though as he aired it out down field only to have his pass picked off by Lions DB Ryan Phillips.
As Winnipeg held on to the lead, the Leos quickly snagged momentum with one big play by their defence. With 10:06 left in the game, Willy looked for receiver Justin Wilson on a dig route but it was jumped by DB Cord Parks who picked it off and gave BC immediate field position.
Two plays later, Glenn looked down field for Arceneaux who was pulled down DB Bruce Johnson who was called for Pass Interference. The Lions gained the yards but lost Glenn who was roughed up on the play by Sears Jr. He left and did not return.
Beck entered the game and quickly hit Jackson on a screen pass – he lowered his head, broke a tackle and reached for the goal line for the 11-yard touchdown.
That score, combined with a single two minutes later, gave the Leos a 21-17 lead which the expanded on with their next possession.
Beck hit Arceneaux for a completion and then aired it out for former Blue Bomber slotback Kito Poblah who raced un-touched for his first touchdown as a Lion. The 55-yard major gave the Lions a 28-17 advantage; a lead they would not relinquish.
With 2:27 left, the Bombers made it closer with a 2-yard touchdown run by Cotton which was set up by a 49-yard completion from Willy to receiver Rory Kohlert. The two-point conversion failed however.
Although the Lions offence came to life in the second half, the defence was un-relenting for most of the contest, especially the defensive line which was after the Bombers quarterback all night. Khreem Smith specifically had four sacks just on his own while Winnipeg set a new franchise low for most sacks surrendered in a season with 70. The Lions had 10 total on the night.
The Lions will had to Edmonton next week to continue jostling for playoff for a playoff position while the Bombers begin to wind down their season in Calgary.
