It was a week of introspection, with the arrest of Slava Voynov of the Los Angeles Kings on suspicion of domestic abuse, and tragedy in Canada's capital followed by Saturday's touching tribute before the Devils-Senators game. There was also more inspired hockey from the Montreal Canadiens.
2014-2015 Power Rankings: Week 3
RANK | TEAM / RECORD | TRENDING | COMMENTS
1 | 2 Last Week: 3 | Despite Slava Voynov's legal problems, the Kings stuck to business on the ice and have won six in a row. Jonathan Quick is off to a Vezina winner-like start and Tanner Pearson, with seven goals, is looking good as an early rookie-of-the-year candidate. The loss of top center Anze Kopitar on Sunday is worrisome, though.
2 | 1 Last Week: 1 | The Ducks lost Sunday for the first time since opening night to one of the three mighty California-based teams. Still, it has been a banner start for the Ducks, who are getting it done on both sides of the puck. They have a nice test coming up with a tough four-game swing through the Central Division.
3 | 1 Last Week: 2 | The Habs continue to set the pace in the East with a four-game winning streak.
4 |
--
Last Week: 4 | The Isles have shaken off a mini-slump with two straight wins. Brock Nelson continues to impress, with 10 points in eight games.
5 | 3 Last Week: 8 | The Predators have just one regulation loss and are taking advantage of a schedule that has had them at home for much of October, going 4-1-1 at Bridgestone Arena.
6 | 12 Last Week: 18 | Still hard to get a handle on the Wild because they've played just six games, but they amazingly have allowed only six goals and boast the league's best goal differential at plus-13.
7 | 2 Last Week: 5 | The Blackhawks are coming off a pair of 3-2 losses to Central Division foes Nashville and St. Louis, but got back in the win column Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Ottawa. Rookie goalie Scott Darling got the win in his first NHL game.
8 | 8 Last Week: 16 | The Flames are 4-2 on the road and are defying the pundits who believed Calgary would be in the hunt for the first overall pick in June's draft.
9 | 1 Last Week: 10 | The Lightning will be looking forward to a little home cooking; their next four games are in Tampa, after playing the previous five in western Canada and Minnesota. The loss of Victor Hedman continues to test the team.
10 | 5 Last Week: 15 | The Devils are 4-2-2 and boast an impressive 4-1 road record. Will Jaromir Jagr ever get old? Uh, apparently not.

--
Last Week: 11 | The Penguins continue to look good under rookie coach Mike Johnston.
12 | 5 Last Week: 7 | The Senators continue to play much better defense than they did last season, allowing just 15 goals in seven games -- but the offense continues to lag.
13 | 1 Last Week: 12 | The Red Wings continue to find ways to collect points.
14 | 1 Last Week: 13 | The Sedins are hot and goalie Ryan Miller has quietly built a 5-1 record for the Canucks.
15 | 6 Last Week: 9 | Pretty sure coach Barry Trotz would like to see a little more consistency from his squad.
16 | 10 Last Week: 6 | Four straight losses, including one on Saturday to the lowly Sabres, took the luster off the early-season glow the Sharks had been enjoying. The big bounce-back win over the red-hot Ducks Sunday was much-needed.
17 | 2 Last Week: 19 | The Stars are tied for the lead in the West in goals per game and Tyler Seguin sits atop the scoring race. Defensively, however, they are giving up way too much: 3.50 goals allowed per game, tied for 27th in the league.
18 | 2 Last Week: 20 | Interesting times for the Bruins, who are without captain Zdeno Chara for four to six weeks because of a knee injury. If only they got to play the Leafs every night.
19 | 5 Last Week: 24 | The Flyers, winners of two straight, are slowly making up for a horrible start.
20 | 1 Last Week: 21 | A lopsided loss to the Canadiens on Saturday shows the Rangers aren't where they need to be.
21 | 4 Last Week: 17 | The Blues can't seem to get on track offensively, as they have just 16 goals in seven games.
22 | 8 Last Week: 30 | Kudos to coach Dallas Eakins, who has the Oilers playing a more complete game during their current three-game winning streak.
23 | 9 Last Week: 14 | The Blue Jackets were outscored 9-3 by the Ducks and Kings this past weekend and have lost three of four. Nick Foligno left Sunday's game on a stretcher after his head rammed into a referee's elbow in a freak accident, but initial reports indicated the injury wasn't serious.
24 | 2 Last Week: 26 | The Panthers are much more difficult to play against this season, having allowed just 16 goals in seven games. It's the fact they've managed just 10 goals of their own through seven games that's problematic.
25 | 3 Last Week: 22 | The Leafs are just 1-4 at home, and getting waxed Saturday at Air Canada Centre by the arch-nemesis Bruins does nothing to improve the mood in Leafs Nation.
26 | 1 Last Week: 25 | The Coyotes were winless in three before squeaking by the Panthers in overtime on Saturday.
27 | 4 Last Week: 23 | Getting goalie Semyon Varlamov back in action is a huge lift for the Avs, who have ground to make up after a slow start.
28 | 1 Last Week: 27 | The Jets got a big two points with an OT win over the Avs Sunday.
29 | 1 Last Week: 28 | The Sabres rose for their second win of the season, beating the Sharks in San Jose on Saturday. But they are still winless at home.
30 | 1 Last Week: 29 | Talk of big change coming in Carolina, but this is a season that is already on the verge of being written off.
