WINNIPEG -- Bo Levi Mitchell threw two touchdown passes, while the defence turned down a late-game comeback as the Calgary Stampeders earned a 33-23 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday night at Investors Group Field.
The win clinched Calgary's second straight West Division title, securing a first-round bye and a home playoff game in the West Final on Nov. 23.
The Bombers battled back from a 23-7 second-half deficit to trail by just three points late in the fourth quarter, but Calgary's defence shut down Bombers' backup quarterback Robert Marve before getting the clinching touchdown from Jon Cornish with just over a minute left in the game.
Cornish was his typical self in the Stamps' return to action, rushing for 160 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and re-claiming the league lead in rushing yards.

Marve entered the game in the third quarter after Brian Brohm, making his first career start in place of the injured Drew Willy, was forced out of action with an injury to his finger. Paris Cotton scored two touchdowns and rushed for 108 yards in his second career start as the Bombers' feature back, while Clarence Denmark had a game-high 86 receiving yards on three catches.
But while the Bombers put forth a spirited effort in front of the home fans, it wasn't enough to avoid a seventh straight loss at the hands of the talented and well-rested Stamps team.
Brad Sinopoli and Joe West each caught a touchdown pass in the win for Calgary, while Drew Tate scored the third touchdown on a one-yard plunge near the goal line. Mitchell finished his night with 258 passing yards on 18-28 passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions, while Anthony Parker led the way receiving with 71 yards on eight catches.
Mitchell had the Stamps offence moving slowly but surely on the game’s opening possession, picking up four first downs on eight plays to move into Winnipeg territory. Then after an onside penalty, the young gunslinger finished off the drive with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Sinopoli to get on the board early.
Sinopoli was injured on the play, but provided his team the early lead after capping off an 11-play, 69-yard drive that took 5:54 off the clock.
A pair of quick incompletions by Brohm put the ball right back in the hands of Mitchell, who on his second possession elected to take a more immediate route to the end zone. On a play-action fake, the Katy, Texas native rolled out and found West behind the defensive secondary for a 51-yard touchdown pass.
Barely over halfway through the opening quarter, the Stamps had a 14-0 lead on the road, while Mitchell had completed five of his first six passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns early in his return to action.
The Bombers battled back with two possessions led by Brohm, but had to settle with three points on each of them to cut the deficit to 15-6 in the second quarter. The offence threatened again soon after with some trickery, when Brohm took a flea flicker and connected with Denmark for a 54-yard gain to the Calgary eight.
Happy Returns

Bo Levi Mitchell enjoyed a solid return under centre for the Stampeders, connecting on two first-quarter touchdowns to Brad Sinopoli and Joe West. With the win, the Stampeders clinch first in the West and a bye to the Western Final at home.

But on the next play, Shawn Lemon got to Brohm and forced him to cough up the football. It was recovered by Junior Turner, ending the threat and giving the Stamps the ball back in their own end.
The Stampeders also threatened twice more before the half, but Mitchell was picked off twice by Don Unamba and Chris Randle as the Bomber defence battled back following a tough start to the first quarter.
Up 16-6 to start the second half, Calgary’s defence forced a stop and the Stamps took over looking to add to their lead. Some strong running by Cornish moved the offence upfield, before Mitchell looked long for the deep ball to West.
The burner couldn’t come down with the pass, but his effort warranted a pass interference call and a subsequent first down at the one-yard-line. Drew Tate finished things off from there, plunging into the end zone to extend Calgary’s lead to 23-7 early in the third quarter.
Brohm was forced out of the action shortly after with an injured finger, leading the elusive backup Robert Marve into action with plenty of second-half action left. Marve struggled to complete passes early on, but the Bombers held an edge in the field position battle and eventually forced Calgary to take a safety deep in its own end.
Down 23-9, the Bombers struck suddenly near the end of the third quarter as the run game began to carry the offence. After moving into scoring range, rookie running back Cotton burst through a seem and sprinted for a 35-yard touchdown run on the final play of the quarter to cut the Bombers' deficit to 23-16.
The Stampeders answered with a field goal thanks to some hard downhill running from Cornish, but that wasn't enough to deter the Bombers' comeback hopes. Down 10, Marve pulled a rabbit out of his hat on first down when he escaped immense pressure from Calgary's defensive line and spotted Rory Kohlert for a 15-yard gain to get the drive started.
An 18-yard completion to Denmark moved the Bombers into the red zone, before Cotton finished the drive off with his second touchdown of the game, this one from 10 yards out to pull Winnipeg to within three points in front of a frantic Bomber crowd.
Winnipeg's defence forced a quick punt, but this time with just over four minutes left Marve couldn't get the sticks moving after being stopped on a second-down scramble.
The Stampeders got the ball back in the hands of Mitchell and the offence late, and this time managed to burn time off the clock thanks to some more strong running by Cornish. Last year's Most Outstanding Player capped the drive off with the game-clinching touchdown, securing the win for Calgary and the team's second straight West Division title.
Winnipeg looks to avenge the loss next Saturday at home against the Lions, while the Stamps return to Calgary to take on the Riders on Friday Night Football.
