CALGARY -- The Calgary Stampeders scored 25 unanswered points in under seven minutes during the fourth quarter on Friday night, leading them to a 40-27 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at McMahon Stadium.
Trailing by 12 heading into the final quarter, the Red and White scored the most points in the fourth quarter for a Calgary team since 1987, erasing the deficit with two offensive touchdowns and a defensive touchdown to earn its 14th win of the season.
A Chris Getzlaf touchdown midway through the third quarter extended the Riders' lead to 12, and they seemed to be in control heading into the third quarter. But Bo Levi Mitchell led the Stamps on a scoring drive to get things started, capped off by a touchdown for former Roughrider Jock Sanders.
A safety and then another quick touchdown drive gave the Stamps the lead, before three Kerry Joseph interceptions, including two by Wall -- one of which returned for a touchdown -- derailed the Riders' night and chalked up a win for the hometown Stamps.
Mitchell threw for 231 yards and a touchdown on 21-of-31 passing with one interception, but his timely completions in the fourth quarter sparked the comeback. Meanwhile, despite another solid performance by Joseph, the veteran will be remembered for his late game interceptions, after finishing his night with 322 yards on 21-of-37 passing with a pair of touchdowns.
Matt Walter led the way for the Stampeders, making the most of his opportunity to play with two touchdowns and 69 yards on 12 carries, while Nik Lewis caught nine passes for 98 yards in his best game of the season.
Chris Getzlaf had a game-high 106 yards anda touchdown on six catches for the Riders, while Keith Toston looked electric at times in his first career start, rushing for 72 yards on only six carries - although an early-game fumble may have contributed to less playing time the rest of the way.
The Riders held the early edge on a 32-yard field goal from Chris Milo, as both offences moved the ball out of the gate but struggled to finish drives with touchdowns.
Calgary changed that late in the opening quarter, however, when Mitchell’s 29-yard completion to Rob Cote was followed by a 23-yard touchdown run by Matt Walter to give the Stampeders an 8-3 lead.

Walter, filling in for the CFL’s leading rusher in Jon Cornish, provided the early spark for a Stamps team missing a couple of its key weapons, as the defence responded with a quick two-and-out of the Riders to preserve the early lead.
After struggling out of the gate, though, the veteran Joseph got things moving on the next Riders possession. Joseph found Getzlaf for a 19-yard gain up near midfield, before connecting with Brett Swain on a second-and-13 play for a 36-yard gain down to the Calgary 24.
On the next play, Joseph connected with Rob Bagg to provide the Riders their first touchdown of the game, putting the visitors ahead 10-8 midway through the second quarter.
The Stampeders went two-and-out on the next possession, while the Riders answered with a field goal to make it 13-8 and continue to seize momentum. An even bigger swing was soon to follow, however.
With time running out in the opening half and the Stampeders pinned deep in their own end, Mitchell tried to strike on a slant pattern over the middle, only to be intercepted by Riders’ second-year linebacker Brian Peters.
The 25-year-old pushed his runback to the outside, finding some running room and sprinting into the endzone, extending the Riders’ lead to 20-8 while silencing the McMahon Stadium gathering – albeit not for long.
With halftime fast approaching, the Stamps weren’t content to go into the break down 12 points. So Mitchell went to work, quickly and efficiently moving the offence downfield before eventually trying the deep ball.
The pass fell incomplete, but Rod Williams was called for pass interference, setting the Stamps up at the one. Drew Tate finished off the drive from there, pulling Calgary to within one score entering the half.
What year is this?

Kerry Joseph enjoyed another strong night on Friday despite the loss, resembling the same quarterback who won Most Outstanding Player for the Riders back in 2007.

After the clubs reset for half time and the defences settled in temporarily, the race was back on halfway through the third. Joseph, already enjoying a strong game commanding the Rider offence, connected with Getzlaf on the corner route for a 40-yard touchdown, extending the Riders’ lead to 27-15.
That score stood up until the fourth, when the Stamps looked to battle back with 12 minutes left in the game. As the Riders continued to pressure Mitchell, a 15-yard penalty extended Calgary's drive and moved the offence into scoring range.
A completion to Nik Lewis moved the chains on the very next play, before Mitchell went straight to Jock Sanders, once a Rider, over the middle for the drive-capping touchdown. The Stamps failed on the following two-point conversion, but cut the deficit to 27-21 on Mitchell's 20th touchdown pass of the season.
That was only the start of the momentum shift. The Stampeders pinned the Riders deep after the ensuing kickoff, then forced a safety and got the ball back in the hands of Mitchell. After a 17-yard run by Sanders, the Stamps' starting quarterback moved the chains on a second down play with a completion to Eric Rogers for 22 yards.
Another pass to Lewis for 19 yards moved the Stamps to the two, before Walter pounded the ball into the end zone from there for his second touchdown of the night. That gave the Stampeders their first lead since the first quarter, as they went up 30-27.
With six minutes left in the game, it was up to Joseph to rally his Green and White after that. But on a desparation throw on second down, the 41-year-old was picked off by Jamar Wall in the Stamps' secondary, and the veteran defensive back continued to inflict damage by returning it for a touchdown.
Another interception on a deflection gave Calgary the ball back, setting up yet another field goal to give Calgary a 40-27 lead, and suddenly the Stamps had put up 25 fourth-quarter points -- their most in a fourth quarter since 1987.
The Roughriders get a much-needed bye next weekend, as they hope to get some of their injured players back in time to figure out who they'll be taking to battle when the playoffs roll around three weeks from now. The Stamps, meanwhile, aim for a 15th win at home against the Bombers on Saturday night.
