EDMONTON -- Odell Willis had a pair of sacks and two forced fumbles, while Dexter McCoil recovered a fumble and returned it 88 yards to the house, as the Edmonton Eskimos thumped the visiting Blue Bombers 41-9 on Thanksgiving Monday at Commonwealth Stadium.
With the win, the Eskimos have secured
themselves a spot in the Grey Cup Playoffs, returning to the post-season
dance for the first time since 2012.
As a result of Winnipeg's loss, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have also clinched a spot in the Grey Cup Playoffs.
Mike Reilly was solid in the win, completing 19 of his 30 passes for 197 yards, running in a pair of TDs on short-yardage plays as well.
The Bombers, meanwhile, were forced to play the second half without starting QB Drew Willy, who was forced out of action with an upper-body injury.
He was good on four of his nine attempts for 23 yards before exiting.
Heading into Week 16’s final game, both the Esks and Bombers were looking to get themselves back in the win column.
Last week saw the Eskimos fall just short of earning a road win in Toronto, dropping a 33-32 decision against the Argos. The Bombers, meanwhile, haven’t won a game since a Week 9 matchup with the Alouettes.
This week, however, it was all Edmonton in the early goings.
While it took a little bit of time, the Esks eventually found the endzone thanks to a one-yard plunge by short-yardage QB Pat White.
The score capped off an eight-play, 57-yard drive that saw Reilly complete passes to Nate Coehoorn and Adarius Bowman for gains of seven and 20 yards respectively.
Hugh O’Neill tacked on a 21-yard field goal on Edmonton’s next possession to extend the Green and Gold’s lead to 10.
The three-pointer was made possible thanks to a fumble by Paris Cotton on Winnipeg’s preceding drive.
Cotton, who had just 11 career carries heading into Monday’s game, was filling in for Nic Grigsby who was left off the team’s active roster this week.
After the Esks increased their lead to 14 thanks to a missed field goal single point and a 33-yard field goal by O’Neill, the always potent Eskimos defence decided to make their mark on Monday’s action.
Already with two sacks under their belt, the Odell Willis continued to give Drew Willy a hard time, sacking him once again, while simultaneously forcing a fumble.
The loose ball was picked up by rookie Dexter McCoil, who returned it 88 yards to the house to give the Esks a 21-0 first half lead.
Then, on their next possession, the Esks added
to their already steep lead thanks in large to a costly pass
interference penalty in the endzone by Bombers DB Demond Washington on a
pass intended to Bowman.
One play later, Reilly punched it in himself to give the Esks a 28-0 lead.
Prior to the conclusion of the first half, Willy was sacked in the endzone by McCoil, increasing Edmonton’s lead to 30.
Things only got worse from there for the Bombers.
Another pass interference penalty in the endzone translated into more points for the Esks, as Reilly again scored from one yard out on the very next play, extending Edmonton’s lead to 37-0.
The halftime deficit was the largest in Winnipeg Blue Bombers history. To make matters even worse, the Bombers announced during halftime that Willy would not be returning to the game due to an upper-body injury.
Brian Brohm came in for relief.
The second half wasn't as bad for the Bombers, who managed to limit the Eskimos to three points in the third quarter and score six of their own thanks to a pair of field goals by Lirim Hajrullahu.
Midway through the fourth quarter, the Esks opted to take Reilly out of the game and replace him with Matt Nichols. The Eastern Washington grad completed just two of his of his four passes for 17 yards and no touchdowns with an interception. Brohm, on the other hand, finished with 14 completions on 27 passes for 199 yards and no TDs either.
Next week, the Bombers will return home for another tough test, as they'll play host to the Stampeders on Saturday night. The Esks, meanwhile, will hit the road to take on the Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Bombers have the coaching staff and QB....but
they need to fill a lot of holes around that before this team can come
out of the disastrous wasteland Joe Mack created with his absolutely
brutal management of the team. Unfortunately, a couple more years of
losing teams is in the works, but look for steady improvement year to
year. Got to keep drafting the best Canadian talent and try to pick up
some free agents. The young coach and QB will gain good experience in
the meantime as pieces come into place. Patience is what it takes. By
2016 or 2017, things could be very good. Right now....it is sucking bad
as a young coach tinkers too much with a limited talent pool due to
injury and past years of mismanagement.

The Eskimos totally dominated and completely
crushed the free falling Bombers. Impressive performances by Mike
Reilly, Adarius Bowman, Odell Willis and the rest of the tough rugged
Eskimos defence. Mike Reilly and Adarius Bowman are becoming a
outstanding passing duo. Congrats to the Eskimos on securing their 1st
winning season in 3 years and clinching a playoff spot. However if the
Eskimos want to go to the Grey Cup they need to find a way to beat the
Stampeders

Once again we see that who's the qb and who's the rb doesn't mean much without a stout O-line.
