Week:
It was a week of slipping and sliding and moving and shaking in the Power Rankings. The Washington Capitals remain atop our list. The New York Islanders made a huge jump, while their cross-city rivals, the New York Rangers, dropped a few more spots. The defending Stanley Cup-champion Chicago Blackhawks made up some ground, as did the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames, thanks to both teams riding five-game winning streaks.
2015-2016 Power Rankings: Week 10
RANK | TEAM / RECORD | TRENDING | COMMENTS
1 |
--
Last Week: 1 | Goaltending. Goaltending. Goaltending. Braden Holtby has led the Caps to an 8-1-1 record in the past 10 games. He also extended his points streak to a career-high 11 games (10-0-1).
2 | 8 Last Week: 10 | The Islanders -- who have gone 8-0-2 in their past 10 -- are getting contributions throughout the lineup and moved into second in the Metro. Their most recent regulation loss came on Nov. 22 at Montreal. Kyle Okposo has two goals and two assists in his past two games. Goaltender Thomas Greiss made 27 saves to record his first shutout of the season.

--
Last Week: 3 | Despite having their seven-game points streak snapped by Saturday's 3-0 loss to the Blues, the league-leading Stars continue their best start in the franchise's 48-year history. Linemates Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin are leading the way, each with 40 points. Benn leads the league with 20 goals.
4 | 2 Last Week: 2 | On a six-game road trip, the Kings had their six-game winning streak snapped with Saturday's 2-1 OT loss to the Sabres. Despite the loss, the Kings extended their points streak to nine games (7-0-2).
5 | 1 Last Week: 6 | The Bruins are 8-1-2 in their past 11 games; goalie Tuukka Rask is 6-0-2 in his past eight games. The power play has been a major reason for the turnaround, with a league-leading 30.8 percent success rate. Since their 0-3-0 start, the Bruins are 16-6-3. Only the Capitals have been better in the East in the past 25 games.
6 | 2 Last Week: 4 | Despite a pair of OT losses, the Wild extended their point streak to seven games (4-0-3). Backup goaltender Darcy Kuemper posted his first shutout of the season in a 25-save performance during Saturday's 2-0 win over the Sharks. Defense has been key for the Wild during this streak; they have allowed no more than two goals in six of their past seven games.
7 | 7 Last Week: 14 | Patrick Kane extended his points streak to 26 games during Sunday's 4-0 win over the Canucks. Goaltender Corey Crawford recorded his second consecutive shutout. The defending Stanley Cup champions are 4-1-0 in their past five games.
8 | 12 Last Week: 20 | Huge jump this week, but how long will it last? The Oilers have won five in a row and face the Bruins Monday night in Boston. It's the first time Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli has returned to TD Garden since the Bruins fired him at the end of last season.
9 | 13 Last Week: 22 | This is also a huge jump for the Flames, who are in the midst of a five-game winning streak. They have also won nine consecutive games on home ice. Johnny Gaudreau has seven goals and three assists in that span.
10 | 5 Last Week: 5 | The Habs snapped a season-long four-game losing skid with a 3-1 victory over the Senators on Saturday at home. Montreal had 27 shots in the first period and outshot Ottawa 42-26.
11 | 2 Last Week: 9 | The Red Wings have earned points in their past five games, going 2-0-3.
12 |
--
Last Week: 12 | The Devils had their five-game points streak snapped with Sunday's 4-0 loss to the Islanders. They are 3-1-2 in their past six games.
13 | 6 Last Week: 7 | The Senators have lost back-to-back games in regulation only twice this season, including their recent two-game skid. Saturday's game against the Canadiens was simply awful. Allowing 27 shots in the first period was embarrassing.
14 | 6 Last Week: 8 | The Panthers are only two points behind the Devils for the second wild-card spot in the East. But after a recent five-game winning streak, they are 1-3-0 in their past four.
15 | 1 Last Week: 16 | The Lightning are 3-2-0 in their past five games. Goalie Ben Bishop is keeping this injury-riddled team in it. The organization should also tell captain Steven Stamkos to stay off Twitter for the foreseeable future and stop "accidentally" liking posts about playing for the Maple Leafs.
16 | 5 Last Week: 11 | If the Flyers could play more consistently and a little more disciplined, they would be better than a .500 team. Captain Claude Giroux is having a solid season with 11 goals and 17 assists in 30 games. Jakub Voracek is second with 16 points, so the Flyers will need more contributions to climb in the East.
17 | 4 Last Week: 13 | The early-surging Rangers have definitely cooled off. They have lost four of their past five games and have only two wins in the past 10 games. They host the red-hot Oilers on Tuesday at MSG.
18 |
--
Last Week: 18 | The Blues snapped the Stars' points streak at seven games with a 3-0 win on Saturday. Goaltender Jake Allen recorded his fourth shutout of the season.
19 | 2 Last Week: 17 | A coaching change was needed, which is why GM Jim Rutherford fired Mike Johnston and promoted Mike Sullivan from the AHL. This is the type of shake-up this team of talented players needs. Sullivan will make sure the Penguins find an identity and play with passion.
20 | 4 Last Week: 24 | With the 5-4 OT win against the Coyotes on Saturday, the Hurricanes are 4-1-0 in their past five games. Carolina has scored five goals in each of the past four.
21 | 6 Last Week: 27 | The Avalanche are 5-2-0 in their past seven games. Goalie Semyon Varlamov has been solid, making 42 saves in a 3-1 win over the Blues on Sunday, and 34 saves in a 3-2 victory over the Predators the day before. It'll be interesting to see how the Avalanche play against the Blackhawks on Tuesday in Chicago.
22 | 1 Last Week: 21 | Entering Friday's game against the Hurricanes, the Ducks were 3-1-0 in their previous four games. They also went four days between games before losing 5-1 to the Hurricanes at the Honda Center. Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf was not pleased with the loss, saying, "I call it not being a pro."
23 | 8 Last Week: 15 | Forward Mathieu Perrault collected one goal and three assists in the Jets' 6-4 win over the Blue Jackets on Thursday. His four-point game is the most by any Winnipeg player this season. The Jets are 3-2-0 in their past five.
24 | 1 Last Week: 23 | This team is going to be a lot of fun to watch once it begins to win on a more consistent basis. The Sabres snapped the Kings' six-game winning streak with a 2-1 OT victory on Saturday. It was the Sabres' third consecutive victory on home ice. Forward Ryan O'Reilly, who scored the game-winning goal against L.A., has three goals and seven assists in a seven-game points streak.
25 |
--
Last Week: 25 | There has been chatter whether the Predators should trade defenseman Shea Weber. That would be a mistake, especially given Nashville's potential. The Preds enter Monday's action with the second wild-card spot in the West.
26 | 7 Last Week: 19 | With his team on a six-game losing skid, coach Peter DeBoer tweaked his lineup during Saturday's 2-0 loss to the Wild. For the first time this season, linemates Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski were split up, but it didn't help.
27 | 3 Last Week: 30 | After wins over the Sabres and Rangers last week, the Canucks lost 4-0 to the Blackhawks Sunday night. Vancouver has five wins in its past 19 games.
28 | 2 Last Week: 26 | Don't change the logo. Hasn't this organization been through enough changes? On the ice, the Leafs have won two straight, and they had six days off between games, next playing the Lightning on Tuesday at home.
29 | 1 Last Week: 28 | The Blue Jackets are 1-1-3 in their past five games. Columbus is scratching away with points but needs to win.
30 | 1 Last Week: 29 | After snapping a five-game losing skid with a 2-1 win over the Wild on Friday, the Coyotes fell short again with a 5-4 OT loss against the Hurricanes on Saturday.

Chris Damm
Usually I can find a good defense for power rankings, being a weekly (with some extension for streaks) glimpse of the teams.
But my god this week is awful. The Wings drop two spots despite having points in their last 10 games? The only other team on here without a regulation loss in the last 10 games is the Isles, this Isles fan is happy about that! The Isles get a deserving jump, but Detroit drops? I get that its a glimpse and the Flames and Oilers should jump by normal P. Rankings standards, but at least leave the Wings above them. Personally I would've bumped Detroit above the Hawks and Wild. Can't wait to get Pierre and Scott back.
Alex Bieri ·
Actually
they have had points in 13 games in a row. Which makes the comments
by ESPN in their ranking especially dumb. Who cares though its
December.
Chris Damm
Alex
Bieri I love the power rankings because they are as accurate a
depiction of current power (Weekly) as humanly possible. There is
always a few bad calls by Scott and Pierre, but generally you can make
decent defenses based on this not being a standings or overall season
power!
But yes the Wings got a heavy shaft here, and also yes these rankings don't really matter despite the fun I have watching people debate them every week (Except this current writer because he sucks).
Tom Johnson ·
That
is a perfect way to view these rankings, as Bar Conversation starters.
But, yes, this guy is so bad, as to make the whole thing pointless to
even debate after you've had a half dozen shots of Tequila. (maybe that
is his excuse ???)
Dan Kleppe
He
dropped them because they only have 2 wins in last 5 games....and 2
teams that passed them both won 5 in a row....Makes sense to me. Does it
mean EDM and CAL are better then DET? No, but they're currently playing
better.
Nate Parmann ·
Dan
Kleppe They're actually 3-0-2 in their last 5. You kind of lose all
credibility when you can't even get stats right. That's the bigger issue
here.
Chris Damm
Dan
Kleppe But that's why I stated to bump Detroit above the Hawks and
Wild, because longer streaks (They've earned points in 13 past games!)
do get some consideration in these rankings. That would've been less
strange of a rankings.
Also, bar conversation is a perfect way to describe this. That's why I love them because there is always jawing between friends about who is better than who and who is hot/not! So in that termonology this is like the friend who walks in on the conversation and starts telling everyone why the Cowboys are the best team in Football.
Sergio Bonilla
It
doesn't matter how long their streak was. That factors into the
starting position before changes for this week. They had the same record
as the Wild over the last 5 games, both teams dropped 2 spots for those
two OT losses. There's no way Red Wings would be ranked above the Wild.
The Blackhawks went 4-1. Same number of points, but wins will trump
loser-points. A jump of 7 spots might be too much, but given Detroit's
drop, the Hawks would still be ranked above them this week.
Eric Doyle ·
basically
the 8th best team in the East is ranked 5th, and the 4th best team in
the entire league is ranked 17th. Thats all you need to know to prove
this guy is a joke.
Thomas Kelley
Eric Doyle The Bruins are 9-1-3 in their last 13, the Rangers have been losing.
Danny McMillan ·
Dan
Kleppe So if a team at the top goes 0-3 one week and a team at the
bottom goes 1-2, by the logic of the writer here, they should be bumped
UP above the other team? Stupid
Ryan Gallagan ·
Spoken like a true Eastern Conference fan who knows absolutely nothing about the West.
Mike Damico ·
Detroit
has not outright lost a game in over a month and has earned points in
their last 13 games (not just 5) drops 2 spots. Calgary and Edmonton
despite their 5 game winning streaks still have losing records and
they're are ahead of the Wings? Ha!
Chris Hardtke
2-0-3
is 7 points out of a possible 10. Or, 1.4 points per game. Either way
you split it, you'd finish with 114 points on the season, which could
mean the President's Cup.
Andrew Brooks ·
I
was thinking the same thing about the Red Wings. I don't feel
resentful that they've ranked them lower than others, like the Flames,
but I was going to comment just to point out how meaningless these
rankings are and how no one should pay attention.
Dennis Estrada ·
Add to the fact that they are actually 3-0-2 NOT 2-0-3 their last five. Great rankings this week.
Chris Hardtke
Dennis Estrada Even better, 8 out of a possible 10 points, puts a team on pace for 131 points for the season.
Thomas Kelley
If you want to look at it that way, then the flip side is that the Wings have outright won only 3 of their last 13 games.
Phil Adams ·
Capitals
have yet to lose two games in a row this season. Still too early to get
overly excited, but it's nice to see them playing so well. Oshie has
been a great addition, and Holtby has been amazing. GO CAPS!!
Gary Wickham ·
of
course we cant get excited, even up 3-0 in a playoff series, soo hard to
watch the playoffs with the caps, especially now since we have to
eliminate our division to advance, hate playing the boring rangers every
year, they work hard just for a lucky bounce,i could coach that. glad
mike green is gone,i wish him well, this justin williams is great, hope
johanson has a big year in the playoffs
Nate Parmann ·
I
know these ranking focus on just the past week. But the Wings have
points in their last 13. 8-0-5 in that stretch. 21 our of a possible 26
points. What's written in this artcile isn't fasle, but it doesn't tell
the whole story. Also the fact that Edmenton and Calgary are in the top
10 is pretty hilarious.
Adam Kwiecien
Not to mention the Wings are 3-0-2 in the last five not 2-0-3 heck... you could say they are 4-0-2 in the last 6!
Justin Sabourin ·
If
you are going to disreguard two teams that have excellent win streaks
going on, spell both the names right. It is Edmonton, can't say
autocorrect failed you on that one.
Nate Parmann ·
Justin
Sabourin Regardless of my spelling error and five game win streaks, the
Oilers and Flames are not top 10 teams. Get over it.
I
have questioned the rankings before but this week is awful. I cant wait
for the regulars to fix the mess you have made of their rankings.
I dont agree with all of what our regulars choose, especially regarding my own team, however usually there is at least some resemblance of intelligence and it is much easier to see what the experts are thinking. This looks like a little boy picking his favorite teams and dropping the rest. If this guy is now a regular count me out of this waste of time. |
