The Quad City Mallards had trouble finding ways to stop Rapid City, which beat Mallards, 5-1. Rapid City's Tim Boron was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 25 saves and let only one puck past him. Boron certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 1.99 entering the contest.
Rapid City was led by Sean Erickson, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Erickson scored 15:52 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Rapid City.
Rapid City stifled Quad City's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Rapid City put 36 shots on net during the contest, more than the 30.4 it averages per game.
Rapid City also got points from Scott Wray, who also had one goal and one assist and Konrad Reeder, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Rapid City also had goals scored by Eric Giosa and Scott Brannon, who each put in one. In addition, Rapid City received assists from Jesse Schultz, who had two and Justin Faryna, Matthew Larke, and Kyle Stroh, who contributed one a piece.
The Mallards racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with five minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 18.0 minutes per game Quad City had been spending in the box. The Mallards put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Rapid City to score on any of its four power plays. Quad City was below its usual level of shot production, taking 26 shots compared to the 32.7 the Mallards average. Quad City could not produce up to it normal offensive output. The Mallards put an average of 3.8 pucks into the net per game. The defense for Quad City played an important role offensively, racking up 12 shots on goal.
The Mallards were led by Matt Duffy, who scored the team's only goal. Duffy scored 15:33 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Rapid City. Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel assisted on the tally.
Rapid City ended with 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors. Thomas Heemskerk recorded 31 saves for Quad City. The Mallards registered zero goals on three power play opportunities.
