The Wichita Thunder were firing on all cylinders against the
St. Charles Chill, and when the final buzzer sounded Thunder emerged
with a 5-1 win. Wichita was led by goalie Taylor Nelson, who finished with 25 saves while allowing one goal. Nelson managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.03 prior to the game.
The Thunder bested their season scoring average. This season, Wichita averages 2.6 goals per contest.
The Thunder were led by Ian Lowe, who had two goals. Lowe scored the first of his two goals at 12:07 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Wichita. Matt Robinson picked up the assist. Lowe's next tally made the score 3-1 Wichita with 15:30 left in the second period. Nick McParland provided the assist. Others who scored for Wichita included Andrew Martens, Jon Booras, and Dustin Donaghy, who scored one goal each. In addition, Wichita received assists from Jared Walker, who had one and Jesse Dudas, who had two.
By firing 26 shots on goal, St. Charles exceeded the 21.2 shots it averages per game this year. The Chill's offense was helped by the efforts of their defensemen, who managed to put 12 shots on net during the game.
St. Charles was led by Dan Weiss, who scored the team's only goal. Weiss scored on the power play 15:48 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Wichita. The Chill had gotten the advantage when Wichita's Walker was sent off for interference. Steve Makway assisted on the tally.
The Thunder totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Wichita ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Garrett Gruenke was ejected from the game. St. Charles' Robert Moss stopped 21 shots out of the 26 that he faced. The Chill totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play.
