REGINA – CJ Gable had over 160 yards from scrimmage in his return to the lineup as he and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats outlasted the Saskatchewan Roughriders 31-21 sunday night at Mosaic Stadium.
Gable, who has been out of the lineup all season after an injury to his hand in training camp, was a force for a Hamilton offence that has been pass-first all seaosn. The third-year tailback posted 135 yards on the ground on 20 carries and adding another 29 through the air.
The Riders are still looking for their elusive first win of the season after falling to 0-5 but could be trying to do it without Kevin Glenn. Glenn left the game in the fourth quarter with what looked to be an injury on his throwing arm but no confirmation came from the club by the time the game ended.
Brett Smith entered to try and rally the Riders but ran into an inspired Ticats defence.
Week 5’s finale featured a tale of two running games on the opposite ends of the league leaders list. The dual punch of Jerome Messam and Anthony Allen led a Saskatchewan rushing attack that has been running over opponents despite their record.
The Ticats, meanwhile, were getting their
starting tailback in Gable back in the lineup after missing the first
four weeks with a hand injury. In his absence, the Ticats relied on the
pass, which put their run production at the bottom of the league totals.
Gable factored prominently on the Ticats’ first possession, getting the first three touches and setting up a very long field goal attempt with the wind for Justin Medlock. A 58-yard miss led to a 57-yard return by Weston Dressler which put the Riders in instant field position.
Glenn then put together a string of first downs before Paul McCallum knocked through a 29-yard field goal for the game’s first points.
Zach Collaros and the Ticats offence responded almost immediately as he aired it out for a newcomer. On the third play of their second drive, Collaros patiently waited for a bust in the Riders coverage and threw a strike to a wide open Jasper Collins Jr. who reeled in the 42-yard touchdown on his first career reception.
The former Mount Union receiver entered the lineup with starters Tiquan Underwood and Terrell Sinkfield Jr. out of the lineup.
A 43-yard field goal by Medlock at the beginning of the second quarter and then a 41-yarder by McCallum on the ensuing possession had the Ticats up 10-6.
A missed Medlock attempt from 40 yards out shortly thereafter gave the Ticats a single, and then Gable went back to work.
The Ticats had limited their run plays in the first three games of the season but they had no issue feeding the ball to their starting tailback. He had almost 100 yards rushing in the first half and a solid 48-yard scamper on Hamilton’s next possession helped put another three points on the board off the foot of Medlock.
The Riders took over with just over a minute left in the half and Glenn led his most methodical drive of the game to that point. The veteran pivot completed 5 of 7 passes on a 61-yard drive which he capped off with a 19-yard touchdown strike to Rob Bagg. Another pass to Bagg on the two-point conversion tied things up at 14 as the teams headed into the break.
Glenn stood in tall the entire first half as he got rid of the ball, error free, despite taking hits on his release. He started the second half the exact same way the first half ended. Glenn spread the ball around to Anthony Allen, Bagg, Dressler and Messam – all for gains of over 15 – set up a one-yard touchdown plunge by short-yardage QB Brett Smith to give Saskatchewan their first lead since the first quarter, 21-14.
The ensuing kickoff saw a mix up between a pair of Ticats returners and the Black and Gold started their first drive of the second half in the shadows of their own goal post. Collaros promptly got them out of the hole however by delivering a 29-yard completion to Bakari Grant. A pair of first downs later and Medlock knocked through another field goal, this one from 49-yards out.
The third quarter marched on with both teams’s defences tightening up but on the final play of the frame, the Ticats forced the first turnover of the game. The Riders were second-and-seven on inside their own 25 yard line when Glenn looked over the middle and had his pass picked off by DB Rico Murray.
Murray brought the ball down to the Saskatchewan 3-yard line but an unnecessary roughness call on WR Brandon Banks on the next play forced Hamilton to hit a 25-yard field goal.
As the fourth quarter started, Glenn was sidelined with Smith taking over behind centre.
With the Riders’ starter out, Gable went back to work ripping off a pair of scampers off screen plays. Collaros then hit Andy Fantuz twice as part of a 10-play, 67-yard touchdown drive capped off by a Jeff Matthews 1-yard plunge.
Gable pounded it on the ground from there as his menacing rushing set up a 39-yard Medlock field goal to give the Ticats a 10-point lead with 1:41 remaining to put the game out of reach.
A two-point conversion pass from Collaros to Grant put the Ticats back up by a major, 28-21 with just over six minutes remaining.
These two clubs will both battle division rivals next weekend as the Riders head to Commonwelath to take on the Edmonton Eskimos while the Tiger-Cats will host their home opener as the East Division leading Toronto Argonauts travel to Tim Hortons field.
