Franklin connected on three touchdown passes, two with Adarius Bowman and one with Kenny Stafford, for a solid debut under centre. He finished with 5-of-8 completions for 83 yards. Nichols went 17-for-25 with 196 yards. No reason was given for the change.
Drew Willy left the game earlier in third quarter following a sack. He appeared to be sandwiched between Marcus Howard and Eddie Steele but left the field under his own power. He did not return to the game and was replaced at pivot by Brian Brohm.
The Bombers split running back duties between Paris Cotton and Cameron Marshall, and the duo finished with 13 carries for 72 yards on the ground.
Brohm threw a pair of interceptions and had a third one called back on pass interference.
Shakir Bell followed up his impressive debut by rushing for 95 yards on 12 carries. He had a 69-yard run late in the fourth quarter but was knocked out of bounds before he crossed the goal line. Bowman then scored his second touchdown of the game on a pass from Franklin.
Both teams struggled to mount offence in the first half beacuse of the rain but found a better flow once the weather improved at the start of the second half.
Kendial Lawrence nearly returned a kick all the way to the house from 50 yards out in the third but was brought down near the goal line. Jordan Lynch then punched it in at 6:48 for the first touchdown of the game to give Edmonton an 11-3 lead.
Aaron Grymes recorded his first interception of the year on Brohm. Mike O’Shea challenged that it was pass interference but the call on the field stood.
Franklin entered the game at quarterback at the four minute mark of the third frame for the Eskimos and immediately connected with Nate Coehoorn for a first down. Bowman then grabbed a 25-yard pass in the endzone for Franklin’s first career TD pass and increased the Eskimos lead to 18-3.
What appeared to be a temporary takeover ended up being permanent as Nichols never re-entered the game.
Brohm threw a pick after Addison Richards bobbled the football and Dexter McCoil snagged it out of midair.

The rainy weather wreaked havoc on both teams in the first half and resulted in a 4-3 Edmonton lead at halftime.
Bell fumbled the ball on his first touch on the Eskimos opening drive as the Bombers recovered for an early turnover. Winnipeg could not take advantage of the great field position as Lirim Hajrullahu would miss the field goal attempt to keep the game scoreless.
Odell Willis picked up his first sack of the year and a Grant Shaw kicked a single midway through the first frame gave the Esks an early 1-0 lead.
A big catch by Rory Kohlert and a 26-yard run by Marshall put Winnipeg into the Red Zone. A Patrick Watkins penalty moved the Bombers even closer to the goal line but the Eskimos’ defence stopped Winnipeg from getting any closer as the Bombers had to settle for a field goal.
Edmonton drove the ball downfield early in the second quarter and were setting up for a field goal until a Bombers’ offside penalty gave the Esks a new set of downs. Wallace Miles could not haul in a catch in double coverage as Shaw connected on a field goal to put the Eskimos back up by a point.

Both defensive units put on strong displays in the second quarter as Willy and Nichols struggled to get into any offensive flow. It was no different on special teams as kick returners struggled to gain any yards. The weather certainly did not help as there were a number of dropped passes because of the wet conditions.
The Eskimos did a great job of pressuring Willy throughout the frame, forcing him to scramble before throwing the ball away.
Winnipeg hasn’t won at Commonwealth Stadium since 2006.
The game marked the first time ex-Blue Bomber Cory Watson faced his former team since being traded in the off-season.
The Eskimos have now won three games in a row and sit at 3-1 while the Bombers drop to 2-3. The Bombers travel home to host the Lions while the Riders visit the Eskimos in Week 6.
