OTTAWA -- The Ottawa REDBLACKS put the 'TD' in TD Place in Friday night, scoring five touchdowns on the way to a 42-20 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the naton's capital.
Jonathan Williams broke out with the biggest performance of his career, either juking or flattening any defenders in his path as part of a two-touchdown, 180-yard performance. Rookie quarterback Danny O'Brien threw a touchdown pass and Henry Burris rushed for another, while a defensive touchdown by Travis Brown set the wheels in motion in a game with non-stop action both ways.

After several lead changes in the first half, though, the REDBLACKS' consistent ability to move the chains on the ground helped them pull away by the start of the second half, giving Ottawa its second win of the season and keeping the team within striking distance of a playoff spot.
Williams also added 49 yards through the air on two catches, giving him 229 yards from scrimmage on a night that Ottawa fans won't soon forget. Clarence Denmark led the Bombers with a game-high 85 receiving yards on five catches, while Maurice Leggett provided the early punch for the Bombers with a missed field goal return touchdown.
Drew Willy meanwhile had a frustrating evening at quarterback for the Bombers, after being intercepted three times during a dominating performance by the Ottawa defence.
After being haunted by a game-changing fumble return touchdown against them last weekend vs. Montreal, this time the REDBLACKS made sure to set the tone early with a big defensive play of their own.
On the Bombers’ first possession of the game, Willy’s pass was juggled over the middle before landing in the hands of rookie linebacker Brown. The 24-year-old took his second interception of the season and sprinted down the sideline straight into the end zone, giving Ottawa a 7-0 lead with the game just a minute old.
The Ottawa defence got right back at it, forcing a quick two-and-out and giving Burris and the offence excellent field position for its first possession of the game. But after moving the football a little bit and setting up for a field goal, Brett Maher’s 48-yard field goal attempt was wide, setting up one of the most exciting plays in football.
Leggett took the kick out of the back of the end zone and returned it 114 yards into the Ottawa end zone, marking a sudden 10-point turnaround and tying the game at seven points apiece.
The Bombers responded late in the first with a chance to score from in close, but a defensive stand by the REDBLACKS forced a short field goal by Lirim Hajrullahu gave Winnipeg a 10-7 lead.
It was short-lived, however, as the REDBLACKS went to work with some offence. After moving across midfield, Williams bounced outside to the sideline and ran untouched, 53 yards to the Bomber endzone to restore Ottawa’s lead, 14-10.
But in a game full of sudden lead changes, the Bombers weren’t about to stay neutral. Demond Washington returned the ensuing kickoff 66 yards, and after a first down run by Grigsby, Denmark caught a 28-yard pass to set the offence up at the one.
This time, the Bombers finished the deal, as Robert Marve charged through the pile to give the Bombers back the lead, 17-14 with a few minutes left in the half – but just enough time for the REDBLACKS to respond.
A 15-yard personal foul for a late hit on Burris set the wheels in motion, before some solid downhill running by Williams moved the REDBLACKS deep into scoring range. With Burris on the sideline getting checked out after the hit, O’Brien finished the drive off with a five-yard touchdown pass to Khalil Paden.
That marked the first touchdown pass of the season for the REDBLACKS at TD Place, while it was Paden’s first career CFL touchdown to give Ottawa a 21-17 lead with a minute remaining in half number one.
Strong-Willed

Jonathan Williams shouldered the load for the REDBLACKS on Friday night, both dodging and running over would-be tacklers on the way to two touchdowns and 229 yards from scrimmage.

The Bombers threatened before halftime, but were stopped near the 40. Instead of opting to try a 47-yard field goal, they gambled on third-and-five and were stopped. The REDBLACKS meanwhile weren’t content to go into the half with just a four-point lead.
Burris connected on two quick completions to the sideline, before making a pitch to Williams under pressure. The newly-signed running back juked through a crowd of defenders and broke tackles all the way to the one, where the veteran quarterback finished the drive off with a touchdown plunge to extend Ottawa’s lead to 28-17.
Winnipeg made things closer in the third with a field goal, but the REDBLACKS, like they had all night, responded with an efficient drive from Burris deep into Bomber territory. Williams took over from there, finishing the drive with his second touchdown of the night from a yard out to extend Ottawa’s lead to 39-20.
The REDBLACKS added another field goal off the foot of Maher, while the defence stood tall the rest of the way, picking off Willy twice and surrendering just three second-half points.
The win was Ottawa's second on home turf and second of the season, keeping the REDBLACKS in playoff contention now three games back of both the Ticats and Alouettes with five games remaining. They'll look to build on their momentum with a big road test against the Lions next Saturday night at BC Place.
Winnipeg meanwihle dropped its fifth straight game, but for now remains just a game out of a playoff spot via the East Division crossover. The Bombers are looking to catch the Lions, who play on Saturday night in Hamilton. A trip to Edmonton to take on the Eskimos comes next Thanksgiving Monday for the Bombers.
