Comeback Denied: Tate scores late TD for the win

CFL.ca Staff#FNF

REGINA -- In what looked like a incredible comeback again for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Calgary was able to score their only second half points on their final drive as they denied the comeback at Mosaic Stadium by winning 31-24.
After the first half where Riders changed pivots after three interceptions and Calgary held a 24-0 lead, it didn’t look like a comeback was going to happen. Tino Sunseri led the Riders all the way back to tie it up late in the fourth, but Drew Tate had the last laugh as he scored the game winning touchdown with under a minute to go.
The two teams came into their Week 15 matchup with two backup quarterbacks after recent injuries have put their pivots in question.
For the Roughriders it came when Darian Durant was hurt and Tino Sunseri went 1-2 as the starter. That gave Seth Doege the ball for their Week 15 matchup as the Riders tried to find a spark to igneite their offence.
For the Stampeders it was Drew Tate taking over for an injured Bo Levi Mitchell through the last two games. Just when it seemed that Mitchell was ready to return the Stampeders announced that Tate was the starting quarterback for Week 15.
After both Tate and Doege failed to much of anything in their first series the game got a little more interesting on the Roughriders punt.
Stampeders returner Sederrik Cunningham returned it 60+ yards to the house, but was stripped of the touchdown due to a holding penalty giving Tate a chance to drive the ball down the field.
The drive stalled, while the Stamps also lost Jeff Fuller for the game, setting up a 51-yard field goal that was missed by Rene Paredes and returned for a big gain by Tristan Jackson.

On the ensuing drive, the Stampeders defensive line was able to get to Doege on forcing a fumble that was recovered by the Riders and setting up a safety on third down with Milo eight-yards deep in his own end zone.
Once the first quarter was completed, the defence had the early advantage where both teams combined for only 105 total yards (59 Calgary, 46 Saskatchewan).
On the first play of the second quarter, Doege tried finding Weston Dressler deep down the field, however, his pass was high and tipped in the air allowing Keon Raymond to pick it off, although the Stamps could not capitalize.
Two possessions later, the turnover bug continued for the Riders as Doege threw his second interception of the game, this time under thrown right to veteran defensive back Fred Bennett.
After a 20-yard completion to Maurice Price, the Stampeders were looking to score as they entered the Riders’ half, but they couild not get by the Riders defence settling for a field goal attempt that was missed by Paredes again.
The Riders were still within striking distance as Doege came out again but the turnovers continued with the young quarterback throwing his third interception to Jamar Wall.
Two plays later, Tate found Maurice Price for a 10-yard strike for the major and giving the road team the 9-0 advantage.
The turnovers had their effect as Doege was pulled in favour of Tino Sunseri but he could not help the offence get into a rhythm failing to put up any points.
The Stampeders once again drove down the field with time ticking down in the first half but they could not put the ball in the endzone and looked to Paredes to extend their lead. Paredes did not get the ball thorugh the uprights though with the Riders’ blocking the field goal and a penalty taking away the possibility of a single point.
Despite an offence that continued to stall the Stampeders entered the break with a 9-0 lead against a Roughriders team still trying to find a spark.
Saskatchewan began the second half with the football. The second half adjustments didn’t prove to pay dividends right away, as they started with a quick two-and-out.

The Riders’ defense continued to keep the game in striking distance to begin the second half.

After a botched fake punt by the Riders, the Calgary offence came out for their second possession in favourable field position. A pair of plays later, Tate found Anthony Parker for a touchdown to extend the lead to 17-0.

After stopping the Riders again, the Calgary offence continued to click. Tate brought the team down to the Riders ten yardline where he called his own number and rushed it in for a touchdown to what seemed to be the beginning on the end, but the Riders began to find a way.

On the ensuing possession, Sunseri found Dan DePalma for a 82-yard touchdown catch, to not only put the Riders on the scoreboard, but also end their scoreless streak.
Turnover Game

The Calgary Stampeders forced four turnovers in the opening half, which sparked the offence and gave them the large lead at the half.

Down 24-6, Chamblin sent the offence out for the two-point conversion where Sunseri connected with Dressler for the conversion.

On the first play of the fresh new series for Sunseri, after the Riders defence forced a two-and-out, he decided to air it out where he found a wide open Chris Getzlaf for a 57-yard gain. After a pass interference call in the end zone, placing the ball on the one yardline, Sunseri squeaked in for the major and adding another two-point conversion.

With the Riders defence ramping up and the offence beginning to show life, the fourth quarter was up for grabs.

After a stopping the Stampeders offence during their first series in the fourth quarter, Sunseri took the field with the crowd behind as well as momentum.

Sunseri led the team on a ten play drive that brought the Riders down to the Calgary one-yardline. After getting stuffed on their first attempt, Jerome Messam came in on second down and jumped above the pile and stretched for the touchodwn while another two-point conversion tied the game up at 24.

After trading stalled drives, Tate took the field with four minutes to go in the contest.

He threw four consecutive receptions, all for first downs and the Stampeders found themselves on the Riders’ 25 yardline. A few plays later Tate had the Stamps on the one yardline, where he was stopped on second down, settling for a 8-yard field goal attempt.

Paredes was able to hit the field goal, but on the play was a flag on the Roughriders which continued the drive for Calgary. The very next play Tate plunged in for the game-winning touchdown.
Next week, the Riders will travel east to take on the Alouettes, while the Stampeders  play Winnipeg in Week 17 following their bye in Week 16.
