The Denver Cutthroats tried their best to erase a two-goal
deficit, but the Arizona Sundogs would not be denied the victory and
hung on to win, 4-3. A goal by Alex Velischek put Arizona up 4-2 in the second period, but Denver pulled to within one on Troy Schwab's tally 8:43 into the third period.
With the win, the Sundogs evened the series at 1-1 in the best of seven showdown.
Arizona was led by Velischek, who grabbed one goal. Velischek scored 16:11 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Arizona. Paul McIlveen picked up the assist.
The Sundogs kept the Cutthroats' goalie busy throughout the game, and Kent Patterson made 34 saves on 38 shots. Arizona's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.
Others who scored for Arizona included Shawn Limpright, Alex Tuckerman, and Justin Pender, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Arizona were Mike Forney, who had two and Bryan Cameron, Tommy Maxwell, and David Rutherford, who contributed one each.
Denver's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on eight Arizona power plays. The Cutthroats' offense rang up 38 shots on the Sundogs' net.
Denver was helped by Kyle Fletcher, who finished with one goal. Fletcher scored on the power play 16:11 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Denver. The Cutthroats had taken the advantage when Arizona's Maxwell got sent off for unsportsmanlike conduct. TJ Fox provided the assist. Denver also got points from Schwab, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Denver also got a goal from AJ Gale as well. In addition, Denver received assists from Lee Moffie, Cam Reid, and Garett Bembridge, who each chipped in one.
The Sundogs' Andrew Engelage stopped 35 shots out of the 38 that he faced. Arizona incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Denver incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors.
