WINNIPEG -- The Hamilton Tiger-Cats will head into the playoffs on a high note.
Chevon Walker rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown, while Henry Burris registered the 100th win of his illustrious career, as the Ticats downed the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 37-7 on Saturday afternoon.
With Hamilton already looking ahead to their Eastern Semi-Final matchup with the Alouettes next week in Guelph, head coach Kent Austin opted to rest a good number of his starters, including receiver Andy Fantuz, running back CJ Gable, defensive lineman Brian Bulcke and linebacker Brandon Isaac.
Despite refusing to risk the health of several of his marquee players, Austin decided to give Burris the start under centre.
The first quarter saw little action offensively, with the two teams combining for just six points on a pair of field goals by kickers Sandro DeAngelis and Luca Congi.
Once the second quarter got underway, however, the offence started to open up a bit.
After DeAngelis gave the Bombers a three-point lead with a 23-yard field goal, his second of the game, Burris and Hamilton’s attack started to find their footing.
On a drive that spanned 12 plays for 73 yards, Burris completed four of his five passes for 47 yards, the last of which landing in the hands of Onrea Jones for an eight-yard score.
The touchdown strike was Burris’ East Division-leading 23rd of the season.
Before the first half could come to an end, Burris and Jones connected again, this time combining for a nine-yard touchdown to increase Hamilton’s lead to 11.
The two teams entered the half with the Tiger-Cats in front 17-6.
Once the third quarter got underway, it was LeFevour leading Hamilton’s offence out on the field, signaling the end of Burris’ afternoon.
He finished an impressive 17 of 24 for 135 yards and two touchdowns, giving him 4,925 yards on the season.
With LeFevour in the game, the Ticats offence didn’t miss a beat.
Following an 18-yard chip shot by Congi, LeFevour handed the ball off to tailback Chevon Walker who found a hole and raced up the middle for a 70-yard touchdown, his first since Week 17 of last season.
Hamilton would increase their lead to 23 thanks to Congi's third field goal of the afternoon, this time splitting the uprights from 23 yards out.
With less than five minutes remaining in the fourth, Bombers pivot Jason Boltus had trouble handling a low snap, and was stripped of the ball by defensive lineman Eric Norwood.
Rookie linebacker Carl-Olivier Primé recovered the loose ball and returned it 49 yards to the house, giving Hamilton a commanding 37-7 lead.
Next week, the Tiger-Cats will return home to Guelph, where they will host the Montreal Alouettes in the Eastern Semi-Final. The Bombers, meanwhile, will clean out their lockers until next year and head into the off-season, one that will surely be interesting for the organization.
