The Wichita Thunder had a four-goal lead after two periods and
cruised the rest of the way en route to a 7-1 win over the Quad City
Mallards. Wichita's David Brown was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 27 saves and let only one puck past him. Brown managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.81 prior to the game.
The Thunder were often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 15.0 minutes per game Wichita had been spending in the box. The Thunder put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Quad City to score on any of its seven power plays. Wichita bested its season scoring average. The Thunder have scored at the pace of 3.1 goals per game during the current campaign. Wichita relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Jesse Dudas, RG Flath and Jon Booras took 21 of the team's 37 shots. The Thunder's defensemen were a huge part of the offense, scoring three goals and taking 15 shots.
Wichita also got points from Booras, who also racked up two goals and one assist. Wichita also had goals scored by Mike Wilson and Matt Summers, who each put in one. More assists for Wichita came via Andrew Martens, who had three, Karl Linden and Jared Walker, who each chipped in one, and Ian Lowe, Matt Robinson, and Tomas Klempa, who contributed two a piece.
The Mallards could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Quad City puts an average of 3.3 pucks into the net per game. With 28 shots on target during the contest, the Mallards exceeded the 24.3 shots they average per game this year.
Wichita registered two goals on six power play opportunities. Ty Rimmer took the loss and made 22 saves before being replaced by Nick Niedert who made eight saves. Quad City ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major.
