A four-goal first period deficit cost the Arizona Sundogs, which could not recover and fell to the Tulsa Oilers, 5-0. Shane Madolora frustrated Arizona's offense all game, and stopped 34 shots en route to a shutout. Madolora certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.96 entering the contest.
Tulsa was sparked by Kyle Bochek, who finished with one goal and one assist. Bochek scored 4:51 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Tulsa. Blair Macaulay picked up the assist.
The Oilers forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. Tulsa surpassed its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. The Oilers excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. By firing 30 shots on goal, Tulsa exceeded the 24.3 shots it averages per game this year.
Tulsa also got points from Drew Fisher, who also had one goal and one assist. Tulsa also had goals scored by Ben Gordon, Matt Ambroz, and Michel Beausoleil, who scored one goal each. In addition, Tulsa received assists from Eric Tallent, who had two and Ryan Menei, Cody Dion, Jarred Mohr, and Ryan Barlock, who contributed one a piece.
The Sundogs were held below their usual level of production. Arizona averages 2.9 goals per game. The Sundogs struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as they finished the game with 19 penalty minutes for three opposing power plays. Arizona relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Johan Ryd, Josh Harris and Kevin Baker took 18 of the team's 34 shots.
Andrew Engelage rejected 25 shots on goal for the Sundogs.
