WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Martin St. Louis scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period and added an empty-netter to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning past the Winnipeg Jets 4-2 in a penalty-filled game Tuesday night.Valtteri Filppula and Ondrej Palat also scored for the Lightning, who won for the sixth time in seven road games. They handed the Jets their fourth consecutive loss overall.
Olli Jokinen and Dustin Byfuglien scored for Winnipeg, and goalie Ondrej Pavelec had an assist.
The Jets were outshot by a wide margin for most of the game but still went into the third tied at 2. They scored two power-play goals and had managed to kill off four of the chances they handed Tampa Bay until St. Louis tipped in Victor Hedman's point shot at 8:39 on a fifth power play.
St. Louis, passed over for a spot on Canada's Olympic team Tuesday, got a rare round of applause for an opposing player from the sellout crowd.
Tampa Bay got off to a quick start.
Filppula deked past Byfuglien in front of the Winnipeg net and fired one past Pavelec at 1:20 with the first shot of the game for the Lightning.
But the Jets capitalized on a 5-on-3 later in the first period. Mark Scheifele fed a pass across the Tampa Bay crease and Jokinen popped it behind backup goalie Anders Lindback before he could recover.
A slashing penalty to Filppula and a delay of game on Lindback (served by B.J. Crombeen) set up the scoring opportunity.
The Jets managed only two shots in the first period to Tampa Bay's five and were outshot 12-7 in the second as well.
Byfuglien still put them ahead on another power play early in the period, snapping one past Lindback on the short side off a drop pass from Blake Wheeler.
Things got chippier as the period progressed and tempers flared. Tampa Bay had a couple of power-play chances but managed only one shot on both combined.
Shortly after the last, however, Palat tied things up on a pass from Nikita Kucherov after a breakaway by Alex Killorn at 15:37.
Frustration boiled over again late in the third and gloves and sticks littered the ice after a clash around the Tampa Bay net that led to four players getting sent to the box. The game essentially ended with a fight between Evander Kane and Eric Brewer.
Game notes
Tampa Bay's five-game road winning streak was snapped Sunday by Edmonton. ... Pavelec picked up his assist on Byfuglien's goal. ... The Jets won the previous four meetings, including Dec. 7 in overtime. The club is 7-3-2 against the Lightning since moving to Winnipeg from Atlanta in 2011.
