LAS VEGAS – The Arena Football League Office announced today that Philadelphia Soul kicker Tommy Frevert has been named Smitty's USA Kicker of the Year and San Jose Sabercats Jack linebacker David Hyland has been selected for the Al Lucas AFL Pulse Hero Award for his philanthropic efforts throughout the 2015 season.
Frevert (6-0, 200, Northwest Missouri State) came to the Soul in Week 2 as a replacement for veteran kicker Carlos Martinez, who went down with an injury in Philadelphia’s season opener. The rookie played exceptionally well, connecting on 124-of-137 extra point tries and 4-of-8 field goal attempts, in addition to leading the East Division champs to a 30.4 percent success rate on onside kicks – the second-highest conversion rate in the AFL this season. Frevert is the first Soul player ever to win Smitty's USA Kicker of the Year honors.
The Al Lucas AFL Pulse Hero Award is presented annually to the player who makes the most significant contribution to both his community and the game of Arena Football. The award was created in honor of Al Lucas, the late Los Angeles Avengers lineman who believed in both giving back to his community and growing the AFL.
Hyland (6-0, 190, Morehead State), a five-year veteran of the AFL and 2012 winner of the League’s Community MVP award, made a difference on and off the field in 2015. At Jack linebacker for the SaberCats, Hyland totaled a career-high 95 tackles with nine takeaways in 16 games with the team. Off the field, Hyland gave back to the San Jose community, volunteering his time at the Ronald McDonald House to visit and raise the spirits of children with serious illnesses. Hyland has also made numerous elementary school visits to promote literacy, sportsmanship, and the importance of staying active, in addition to volunteering his time for the Friends of Children with Special Needs organization during his tenure with the SaberCats.
