OTTAWA -- The Ottawa REDBLACKS have now doubled their win total from last season after defeating the Montreal Allouettes 26-23 in front of a sold out home crowd at TD Place on Friday night.
The REDBLACKS trailed by six points midway through the fourth quarter, but were able to pull out a win and now sit alone atop of the East Division standings.
Greg Ellingson had a fantastic showing with a game high eight catches for 110 yards for the REDBLACKS.
Henry Burris was 32-for-44 and 323 yards, throwing two touchdowns and rushing one-yard for a touchdown of his own.
Rakeem Cato was 20-for-31 and 303 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the losing effort.
Michael Sam also made his much-anticipated debut for the Allouettes on Friday night but failed to register a tackle.
The REDBLACKS have been known for their notoriously slow starts this season. Ottawa did not score a single point in the first quarter of its first four games and had yet to score on an opening drive entering the Friday night matchup.
But Ottawa’s first quarter luck appeared to shift in Week 7. A strong opening drive capped off by a touchdown from Ernest Jackson would put Ottawa up on the board early with a 7-0 lead. Brad Sinopoli had three catches on the 10-play, 78-yard opening drive.
Montreal moved to within field goal range on its opening drive, but Boris Bede missed a long 54-yard field goal attempt and the Alouettes were forced to settle for a single after the REDBLACKS chose to take a knee in the end zone.
The REDLACKS started the game strong, but the second quarter was all Alouettes.
Bede redeemed himself on the Alouettes' next possession by kicking an 18-yard field goal to narrow the lead to 7-4 with 13:51 remaining before the half.
After a three and out, the REDBLACKS were forced to punt away the ball and Montreal was sure to capitalize on its field position. Cato continued his impressive rookie season by rushing 19 yards into the end zone for his first career rushing touchdown to give the Alouettes their first lead of the game.
Montreal also added a single in the second quarter to end the half at 12-7.
After a scoreless second quarter, the REDBLACKS got back on the board on their first possession of the second half. Chris Milo hit his first field goal attempt of the game from 40 yards out to narrow the Alouettes' lead to 12-10.
Not wanting to give Ottawa a chance to get back into the game, Cato connected with Fred Stamps for 54 yards on the second play of the following drive to put Montreal at the Ottawa 20-yard line. Two plays later, Cato threw his second interception of the night that was picked off by Brandon McDonald in the endzone.
The REDBLACKS were sure to capitalize on the
opportunity. Ottawa quickly snapped the ball on each play of the drive,
putting the Montreal defence out of rhythm. Chevon Walker rushed for
35 yards on the drive, setting up the REDBLACKS at the Montreal 11-yard
line. On the next play, Burris found Patrick Lavoie for an 11-yard
touchdown to put Ottawa back in the lead.
The back and forth action continued when Montreal received the ball back on the next possession. Cato connected with Alex Charette for a 20-yard pass. The play helped set up Boris Bede’s second field goal of the game from 42 yards out to narrow in on Ottawa’s 17-15 lead.
An Ottawa three and out put the ball back in the hands of the Alouettes.
Cato led the charge up the field and found Jean-Christophe Beaulieu for a 37-yard play to put Montreal at the Ottawa 37. Six plays later, Cato found Samuel Giguere for a touchdown to continue the exchange of leads and put Montreal up 22-17 with 9:25 remaining.
Montreal would add another single and the REDBLACKS added a safety to put the game at 23-19.
Similar to the first time these teams met this season in Week 1, the game went down to the wire.
On Ottawa’s last possession of the game, Burris found Greg Ellingson for a 38-yard pass to advance to the Montreal 13-yard line.
A pass interference call on the Alouettes moved the REDBLACKS to the one-yard line and Burris rushed into the end zone to put Ottawa up 26-23 with 1:30 remaining.
Montreal recieved the ball back, but was unable to do anything with it in the final minute of the game.
The Montreal Alouettes will return home to play the Edmonton Eskimos on Aug. 13 while the Ottawa REDBLACKS will hit the road and face the Calgary Stampeders on Aug. 15 at McMahon Stadium.
