REGINA – Saskatchewan's first victory will need to wait one more week after another late rally fell just short.
Bo Levi Mitchell threw three touchdown passes and for 303 yards to lead the Stampeders to a 34-31 victory over the Roughriders on Saturday night at Mosaic Stadium in the annual Canadian Football Hall of Fame game.
The teams entered the fourth quarter tied 24-24 until Tory Harrison scored his second receiving touchdown of the game on the first play of the final frame to break the tie and put the Stampeders up 31-24. On the next Calgary drive, Rene Paderes’ hit his fourth field goal of the game, a 40-yarder, to put the Stampeders up by 10 points.
The Riders would reduce the lead to 34-25 after Ray Early recorded a single.
Saskatchewan wasn’t done there. Carl Fitzgerald got around Randy Chevrier and blocked Rob Maver's punt as Junior Mertile scooped up the ball for a touchdown. After recording 801 straight converts without a miss in his career, McCallum booted the point-after attempt wide as the Stampeders lead was cut to 34-31.
The Riders did not lose any momentum as Tyron Brackenridge intercepted Mitchell on a short pass attempt during Calgary’s next drive. As Brett Smith began to lead Riders offence back down the field, Ryan Smith had the ball popped loose and Keon Raymond recovered the fumble for a touchdown with just over three minutes remaining in the game. Corey Chamblin challenged the play and it was ruled incomplete upon review so the score did not change.
In his third career start, Smith threw for three touchdown passes but flashed his speed as well, recording 54 rushing yards.
The opening drive of the game began with Mitchell connecting on back-to-back passes with Eric Rogers as Calgary looked to get on the board in the opening minutes. Paredes connected on a 46-yard field goal for the early lead.
Rob Maver booted a 70-yard single on the Stampeders’ next drive.
Dressler and Messam both recorded big gains for the Riders before Smith recorded a first down himself to keep Saskatchewan moving. In the final play of the first quarter, Smith attempted to connect with Rob Bagg in the end zone but was almost picked off by Jamar Wall.
On the first play of the second quarter, Smith hooked up with Devin Wilson on a 23-yard tocuhdwon pass to move the Riders ahead. It was Wilson’s first career major. They failed to convert on the two-point attempt after an incomplete pass to Weston Dressler.
A series of short passes moved Mitchell and the Stampeders downfield and he connected with Harrison to put Calgary back on top to cap off a 12-play, 76-yard drive. Mitchell saw his two point convert intercepted so the Stamps sat with a 10-6 lead.
Dressler recorded his 500th career reception in the second quarter and that was followed by a Jerome Messam 18-yard rush of a delayed run. Bagg kept the drive alive on an 11-yard reception for a first down. McCallum booted a field goal to cut the lead to just one point.
Tim Brown appeared to return a punt return all the way to the house but it was negated by a penalty. The Riders recorded a pair of sacks on Mitchell and were able to prevent any damage.
With 15 seconds left in the first half, the Riders brought out punter Ray Early to attempt a 65-yard field goal. His attempt fell short and Brown was brought down by Randy Richards on the return. Richards received a match disqualification for his tackle.
Mitchell threw a 46-yard bomb to Rogers in the end zone to close out the first half. Surrounded by Riders defenders, Rogers brought down the Hail Mary throw
to put the Stamps ahead and continue his streak of scoring a touchdown
in six straight games. Matt Walter punched in the two-point convert to
give the Stamps an 18-9 lead entering the halftime break.
The second half did not start well for the Riders as Smith was picked off by Brandon Smith in first minute to give the ball back to the Stamps. Paredes booted a field goal to increase Calgary’s lead to 21-9.
Smith scrambled on a number of plays on the Riders’ next drive to keep moving the team downfield. He connected with Alex Carroll on a 15-yard pass for a touchdown and to cut into the deficit.
Calgary’s special teams continued to be a factor in games as Adam Berger recovered a Steven Miller fumble on a punt return to put the Stampeders into instant scoring position. Paredes hit his third field goal to cap off the drive.
A wide open Nic Demski hauled in a 72-yard reception that he nearly brought in for the major. On the next play, Smith connected with Dressler for a touchdown and Bagg recorded the two-point convert to tie the game 24-24, which is how the scoreboard would look at the end of the third quarter.
At halftime, the newest inductees to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame were honoured including Dave Dickenson, Leroy Blugh, Eddie Davis, and Gene Makowsky. Bob O'Billovich, a long-time CFL Head Coach and General Manager, joined builders Larry Reda and Bob Wetenhall.
Saskatchewan was without Chris Getzlaf in the game. The team also reshuffled its secondary with Brackenridge moving to linebacker and Tristan Jackson sliding in at defensive back.
Both teams will be on the road next week as the Stampeders travel to Winnipeg while the Roughriders square off against the REDBLACKS.
