The Arizona Sundogs' David Rutherford scored 4:41 into overtime to beat the Wichita Thunder, 6-5 (OT). Arizona overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Sundogs trailed 5-3 after a power play goal by Wichita's Matt Summers at 17:31 in the second period. Arizona tied things up at 5-5 on a goal by Rutherford at 15:38 in the third period.
The Sundogs surpassed their usual scoring output this season. This season, Arizona averages 3.0 goals per contest. The Sundogs' offense was clicking better than usual and put 50 shots on goal during the game, better than the 24.1 shots per game they average.
Arizona also got points from Mike Forney, who also racked up one goal and four assists to lead the team in points and Brandon Coccimiglio, who also had one goal and two assists. Justin Pender also scored for Arizona. Other players who recorded assists for Arizona were Bryan Cameron, who had two and Shawn Limpright and Alex Tuckerman, who contributed one each.
The Thunder excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. Wichita relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Andrew Martens, Summers and RG Flath took 19 of the team's 37 shots.
Wichita additionally got points from Tomas Klempa, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Wichita also had goals scored by Matt Robinson and Jason Wilson, who each put in one. In addition, Wichita received assists from Dustin Donaghy, who had one and Mike Wilson, who had two.
Andrew Engelage took the win and made 32 saves before being replaced by Adam Brown who made zero saves. Arizona ended with 16 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. David Brown recorded 44 saves for the Thunder. Wichita totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-5 on the power play.
